I grew up with Marty in Laurel md.....watched him play literally in a wooden barn with the group deuce..........it was an incredible experience watching him play at 14 years old to 18

One thing I've noticed about successful guitar players is that they NEVER rant about how certain guitar players are so much worse or better than any others. They just focus on what they want to achieve.

Everyone is talking about nuno bettincourt at the moment but Marty Friedman is right up there on that level and has been pushing boundaries for quite some time himself. Gary Moore, r.i.p. was another on that level. I think even Hendrix would b amazed at where he pushed rock guitarist too. Marty Friedman is original and very talented

I remember opening for cacophony at the Omni to theater in Oakland CA. Jason Becker and Marty were amazing players and cool dudes.

Yup, Marty Friedman's guitar playing is as unpredictable as ever! I don't know of any other guitarist appears to spit out notes in any direction at any one time. He's a very angular player. Thank fuck he stays well clear of the blues. Very refreshing.

His picking styling reminds me acoustic gypsy jazz players, using rest stroke formulas, the wrist angle, this guy is amazing.

I watched a video of him recording tracks on youthanasia and he really impressed me, I am learning guitar myself and he really is a talented player with a style that I haven’t heard yet. He was soloing on a Jackson V I think and the tone combined with how he plays was on another level. So found my way here to try and get to know him better. He has a lot of wisdom and some good advice for a noob like me lol

Growing up on those Caucophony records back in the day... man... We all had our jaws dropped to the floor.

I still call Marty a Shredder. Loved him with Megadeth. Never listened to anything else he created. Great guy from the interviews I've watched.

That was cool. I do something similar sometimes where I'll change the genre of a song. Rock to Country, Folk to Rock, etc.

I know Marty has done amazing guitar work before and definitely after Megadeth but RUST IN PEACE will ALWAYS be the piece of music as a whole that makes me be in awe of his abilities....just a masterpiece of an album and his work on it is the standout

Marty is my No1 guitarist. The phrasing, the note choices, the vibrato, the bends, the chordal choices..He is metal and he is mellow, he is Jazz and he is melodic, he is sad and he is in major....There is NO CLONING Marty....

Marty is dead on about the shredder label. His style is very unique and its really obvious in the guest appearance he did with Megadeth in Japan. I love Keiko Loureiro's playing and think he's a phenomenal musician, but when Marty played the "Tornado Of Souls" solo I could literally FEEL the difference. Of course it was emotional seeing him play it in Megadeth after over 20 years but also the experience of listening to the creator play it hit different. Only Marty knows the purpose of every note and you don't get the same impact from someone copying it. I know a lot of people in the comments said they "about" 😉cried watching it and I "almost" 😉cried myself LOL. Thank you for that moment Marty and also thank you for introducing me to the endless great talent in Japan through Rock Fujiyama. I currently am obsessed with phenomenal talent in Nemophila and especially wowed with how impressive their resumes are at such young ages. Anyway, loved the Megadeth "cameo" as well as your solo stuff. Marty Friedman might not have started out wanting to be one of the greats, but he definitely ended up being one.🎸🤘

It is absolutely astonishing how bands haven't been jumping at the opportunity to hire Marty as their lead guitarist all these years. He's a top tier, elite guitar player with charisma, stage presence, and creative chops. If I was in an established band, no question in my mind I would be doing everything I could to get him in my band and make some incredible music.

I came to Japan in 2001 and have vaguely known you were around, but just fell into babymetal last year and starting to listen to more Japanese music since then. Up until recently I never heard of Marty. I know I've listened to megadeth albums and heard him but never knew of him and it's a shame because I believe he is better than so many big names.

To think he has an audience that doesn't even know he plays guitar makes my jaw drop.

(Think Marc Bolan / T-Rex, and have a look at the Pink Floyd "Live At Pompeii" video... ) I have a 1980 "VS Musician" - has a "tope secret" sealed module in the preamp - basically a couple FETs and a network of inductive filters to give "Valve Sound") Keep it up mate, greetings from down-under. 👍🍻🎸🎶

Great interview. And what a great guy. Tells it as it is. Really like his unique approach to music and how he doesn't get into the techie stuff, just wants to play. I pretty much feel the same way. And I couldn't believe that he likes Viz so much! Ha. I'm from Newcastle and love the humour in there. Refreshing to see an American get it! I'd only heard Marty's Megadeth stuff, I think it's time to listen to his other stuff. He's really piqued my interest now. Great stuff.

I was flummoxxed by this when I first heard his music.... I have massive respect for his 'Fuck the tech.. its about the music, not the knob twiddling' approach to what he is doing... How can you not like this guy..no prtetention. (okay you may not get the music, that's fine.. the man though is a good bloke). All above views and opinions are mine and not necessarily universal :)

Congratulations on the signature guitar!! It looks and sounds incredible. Not a fan of gold or chrome. Curious if it is available with black or brushed hardware. I will check it out. I have a Fusion HH T style and it is punching way above it’s weight 🤘🏻

I'm the same as Marty. High gain, delay for solos and a wah. That's it. I'm not picky. I have an EVH 6L6 which is great and high end LTD models. They play fantastic. The newer ESP's for $5000 grand just aren't worth it. Maybe if E-ll kept the ESP logo I'd get one of those but not going to pay that much when the deluxe 1000 series play so good.

I don’t think Marty wouldn’t had this success on tv in the United States. Marty would’ve just been known for megadeth. But either way, Marty’s been successful in both with megadeth and in Japan
