My brother was the same way and even while he borrowed mine he still bought into the stigma. 2 months later and he actually enjoyed it enough that he started looking at Prius IV AWD listings to replace his Edge with lol. The stigma really isn't that deserved. My brother isn't hugging trees, throwing out his guns and he'd still vote for Scott Walker if he ran for governor again.

Same with me, until gas prices increased sharply, and when I saw how many miles that cheap Prius cars had, it sold me on the reliability. So I increased my budget and got one with lower miles from a retired couple and now I plan to drive it for 10 years or more. As for the bad drivers comment, that's the one complaint I have with the Prius. The blind spots are absolutely horrible. I have to constantly look before I change lanes because there will always be a car I miss.

I also think the car is really well engineered. The problem I have is every Prius owner is an asshole. They can’t maintain speed and will absolutely cut you off in traffic. They either don’t have their lights on at night or keep their high beams on 24/7.

I gave my 2002 with 202K miles to my son last week. He replaced the brakes because it should have a new set for the rest of its life. The front brakes on one side had a graunchy slide pin but the other side had 6.5 mm of meat left. The wear on the rear brakes was unmeasurable - under 0.1 mm. It needed its first actual repair (besides windshields, tires, wiper blades and 12V battery) a few months ago when the inverter coolant pump - a trouble point through the 2010 model - died. There is an extended warranty on the pump for later years.

11:44 no, it is a nickel-metal hydride battery. This has lower power density but with the right battery management, longer life than Li-Ion. By the way, great video :D you showed why I love the Prius, its made so so well! A little addition. The (3rd gen) plug in prius (~2012-~2016) haa an additional Li-Ion batterypack. This is in addition to the NiMH batteries. If the Li-Ion is empty, the care only uses the NiMH batteries from that point onwards untill you charged the Li-Ion’s via the charging port.

@webnothing For this reason I've always described the Prius as a car designed to be abused. The only way to kill them seems to be to not drive them enough(to be fair it's a good problem to have). I bought mine to run Uber Eats deliveries(before you judge, I moved on to Grubhub and Doordash once they arrived in Wichita), so suffice to say I run my car hard, but I've never noticed any degradation in battery capacity(If anything it has increased slightly - a sign that the battery was recovering from not being used enough by its previous owner). It's never broken down, and all I've ever had to do is regular oil and filter changes.
@kens97sto171
@kens97sto171 5 жыл бұрын
I've got a 2008 with 293,000 miles on. Still has the original battery, mine has less oil leakage than this one. Oil changes are super easy, it's right up front, transmission fluid change every 50,000k it's a simple dump and fill. There's no filter to change, the drain bolt and fill bolt are right there on the front all you need is a hose and a funnel you come in from the top under the hood. You need a 10 mm Allen and a 24 mm socket. 4 quarts of Toyota World standard ATF cost you $20 at Walmart. I average over 50,000 miles a year, and even with this mileage mine still gives me between 45 and 52 miles per gallon in the city and 38-40 miles per gallon on the highway at 80 miles an hour. And it's actually a pretty easy car to work on if you're willing to learn a few things that are different about this car than other cars even the Hybrid battery is not that difficult to work on it takes about 30 minutes to get the battery out of the car. Just one small detail the battery packs inside that main battery are actually nickel metal hydride not lithium. lithium battery did not come out until 2016 and only in some of the models.

kens97sto171 I’ve never got better in the city. I don’t drive more than 70 mph on the highway. I don’t idle anymore than necessary. The cel started coming on intermittently at 123,000 miles. It finally stayed on around 127,000 miles. I now have around 156,000 miles. I replaced the accessory battery in 2015 and again this spring. I haven’t replaced the traction battery yet, but I know it’s going to happen soon. One minute it will show full charge, the next minute it will show one bar and the ice seems to work harder while driving around. It’s definitely louder and lacks power taking off from a traffic light.

@@sniggitty There is no reason really for them to die all at once. The internal resistance of individual batteries will be the main factor for their decade. Some will die before others, sure. But that will happen with new batteries as well, and by changing just the bad cells, you can significantly prolong the life of the other cells, since there is no heat source (the broken battery) anymore. It's like with laptop batteries. There is always just one single cell broken. The other 7 or so are perfectly fine. So, replacing single cells is a good choice in my book.

Are a great car! Bought one for my wife 2 yrs ago, fuel savings calculated has paid it off in that time- 4.6-4.9lt/100km(metric sorry). Jus a cautionary note, the isolator plug removed still doesn't make the battery pack safe! If you are going to dismantle it, you need to understand electrical principles and high voltage handling techniques! Copying someone else doing it is not safe practise! Period! Like a wall socket, easy to copy but understand their are 5 ways to wire, only one is correct and why! Be safe everyone. Nice videos, love the shop size and cars stored look interesting.

My dad got me a red 08 Prius right before I went off to college too! I've had it over 5 years now and love my car, it runs fantastic and quiet plus it's so nice to only pay ~$25 for a full tank of gas around here. The only issue we've ever had with it was a small part of the coolant pump and a coolant sensor needed to be replaced but it sounds like that's one of the more common issues for Priuses/Prii anyway. And about leaving the key in the ignition slot: I've accidentally driven my car for half an hour before with just the key ON MY PERSON, not even physically in the slot. Car starts with no complaint and there's no indicator to let you know, then it drives just like normal. Definitely something to be aware of. Thank you for this informative look at these nifty little cars!

Also don't forgot to pull fuse to trip "maintaince mode" which that is not going turn off engine. Stop start feature in hybrid while injected with NOS. When ECU wanted to turn off engine to switch to battery to use electric motor. So, basically without maintenance mode. That Prius engine will be suicidal to NOS or possibly turbo.

There are two electric motors inside the Hybrid Transaxal (technically they are also generators, toyota calls them MG1 and MG2 for motogenerator 1 and 2) that are the sun and ring gear of a planetary gear-set. Also, fun fact, the power is delivered to the final drive/differential by a chain like a bike or a timing chain. Never understood why.

These gen 2 Prius cars are some of the best Toyotas out there. 40+ mpg on a bad day and no issues for at least 300K miles on the clock. Just change the oil and keep on driving. Also, gen 2 Prius is one of the cheapest cars to own. Just ask anyone who bought one new. They have not put a red cent into it more than likely and still getting 40's mpg. Cost of ownership on these things is crazy low. Until the battery needs to be replaced, but that can be as high as 500K miles.
