In this Video I paint a study of a young man's head from 'The Musicians' of Caravaggio. Caravaggio was a very prolific and controversial artist and using one of his paintings as a study reference is valuable. I try to paint the head as I understand the great master must have painted it and at the same time explain the process for all of you that might be interested in Caravaggio's technique.

Beautiful work maestro i suggest you to paint something with his techicue that he used for painting to tone the paper and to to a grisaille underpaintig and then adding colors by glazing i work with this techicue for about 2 years now and ive learned soo much

I have long been fascinated by the Caravaggio of the Entombment of Christ - which is said to have the face of St. Philip Neri as a young man. I have a print of it framed in my home. I will never forget the feeling I had when I finally saw it in the Pianoteca of the Vatican museums. My two friends went on to look at all the other paintings, leaving me there in front of it, for about 25 minutes. I had to be almost pulled away as we moved on to other rooms of the museum. I won't forget it.

Great study, Antonis. When you paint with oils on your gesso board do you do extra preparation concerning its ground, like do you use some kind of oil primer?

Great question.. Thank you.... I use rabbit skin glue, same as icons, or I prepare the same gesso but with an acrylic glue. Doesn't really matter.... Any gesso you make might be 100 to limes better than the ready ones. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZminpCfs8WqZ30.html

dear antonis your english is good and understandable, I too love Caravaggio very much, I have been watching his Deposizione for many hours, wonderful !!! Are you using oil color, which medium do you use? you are very good as always

Yes, his english is very good. Such a great teacher! The simplicity of his teaching is such a gift to everyone of us, making all this rich experience in multiple techniques and his wisdom in painting accessible to anyone interested. And yet so talented. The medium must be oil, since he does mention it several times within this video.

I like the metal rod or stick that you used . What is the name of that ? Can I buy that in an art shop ? I learn a lot from you like starting from the eyes and dark shadow area . I also like Caravaggio as an artist . The effects of dark and light in his painting really give emphasis of the drama of the subject . I don’t like to used turpentine cause I get head ache after because of the smell . I love oil paint really just the medium feels not so good . I used walnut oil . Great work! I would love to see it more from your works.

Is there such a thing as too much turpentine/spirits at the beginning stage of the painting? Your paint was very thin early in this study. Your english is fine, by the way :)

Mark I don't think oils have any issue from using too much turpentine at first
