If he’s not going to play a lot definitely send him back down to AAA! I have a feeling he won’t stay down there long! With Zuniga you can’t teach that kind of velocity but apparently the STL pitching coach’s don’t think they can fix him or maybe he doesn’t have a good work ethic or he’s a problem in the clubhouse?!? Ryan hits on a good point when he says our pitching coaches couldn't fix him. Granted, other organizations couldn't either, but my point is we need another Dave Duncan. He made good pitchers better, Chris Carpenter was the best example. We gave up on Dakota Hudson even though through bad metrics, he managed a 38-20 record with an ERA under 4. Great pitching coaches can turn pitchers, we give up on, into a Woody Williams or Chris Carpenter.

Burleson has borderline elite batting traits that should convert with more experience. The corner outfield situation would have to get pretty dark for him to be a daily starter there, but there's no reason he couldn't log 80+ starts between DH, 1B, and COF, and not only because injuries do happen.

Do we know if Edman and Donovan will be ready to play at the start of the season ? Injury prone Nootbaar and Carlson will provide playing time for Burleson, plus Palacios got traded. I don't understand why Carpenter was signed, but he is the first cut in spring training if I was Mo.

You keep him. He was a pitcher/1b in HS and pitcher/1b/outfield at ECU he can and will flat out hit and is a winner and great attitude. Goldy will be gone, Carp will be gone you cant lose this piece, unless you want to send him to Cincy.

Make Carpenter an assistant hitting coach for that salary. That should occur after he hits .216 during spring training games. Burleson then plays like he should

Let’s give the guy a couple of years to find out what he can do. Remember, in addition to having to face MLB pitching for the first time, he was learning a new position on the fly, which didn’t help his offense. Who knows? He could be the next Albert Pujols or he could be the next Colby Rasmus. Only time will tell.

It aggravates me that we have a gold glove second baseman that we played at shortstop until Winn rightfully took his place. Now, granted he is talented enough to be a good centerfielder. His hitting does not profile as an outfielder. Meanwhile, our first rounder outfielder is continually demoted to part-time player, that we don't let him play full time until he proves he is a first round pick or a bust.

I'm not sure what to think of Alec Burleson's role. I saw him as the backup first baseman at one point. . WIth the way our outfield gets injured, heck, he may be a starter inteh outfield soo

Do the Cards have any imagination. Winn is a good shortstop that can't hit, while Carpenter was a good lead off hitter in his prime, plus he walks a lot. Give Carpenter two at bats replace with Winn, move Edman to centerfield from shortstop, remove Carlson after a bat or two, and Burleson is available to pitch hit or D H Your welcome!

I don't think so... any moves for the starting rotation will likely happen towards the trade deadline. I think they are comfortable with Gray, Mikolas, Lynn, Gibson, Matz, Liberatore and Thompson as there top starters right now

The Alec Burelson situation is a prime example of why the Matt Carpenter signing remains completely baffling and questionable. I understand the loyalty towards Carp, from the Cardinals. Yes Matt Carpenter provided many thrills for this team, and during his prime years here he delivered many fantastic moments as a player, but this loyalty thing only carries so much weight. Alec Burrelson is desperate for playing time in his development and keeping Matt Carpenter on the squad only undermines his development.

Burly seems to be afraid of making an out. He seems tentative at the plate. He has good power and needs to be more aggressive inside the strike zone. He at times seems to be waiting for the perfect pitch then never gets it so he rolls over on a borderline pitch. Go to the plate pissed...

Burleson is a better outfielder than Walker, so that defense criticism sounds like more excuses than anything, not surprising the things this front office says for public consumption these days. I think he has problems as a left-fielder, but is more than adequate as a right-fielder. Late last season, someone on-line mentioned the question, "Who leads the Cardinals' outfielders in assists?" At the time i looked, it was Burleson. He gets to balls in the gap better than Walker, and his arm is more accurate. (Edit: Alec had 14 assists in 76 games played, best on the team) Despite what Mozeliak says about Carlson being the #4, I truly think he is going to be traded soon, especially if he has a good start to the season. So they have to keep Burleson up at the MLB level.

Matt Carpenter has no business being on this roster as a player. He’s taking up a spot that blocks having a better player on the roster. If the leadership is so bad in the clubhouse then get rid of the manager. What kind of a message is the organization sending to Marmol by saying we need Carpenter for leadership purposes so bad that you bring in a player like Carpenter whose career is over. As for Burleson, I don’t see his value at the Major League level. He’s not gonna to make this team better one way or another.

Can't imagine using a roster spot for Matt Carpenter at this point. His last decent season was 2018. Since then, he's got to be one of the worst hitters in the bigs. Strikes out a ton. Uppercut swing. Warning track power. Terrible arm. etc. etc.

Dont understand the obsession with Burleson offensively. Doesnt hit for average, doesn't get on base, he's slow. Dont care what the metrics say. O and his defense sucks too

I don't think anyone is obsessed with him but they see the potential. Used a 2nd round pick on him, won a batting title at age 23 at Memphis in just his 2nd year of pro ball... defense definitely needs improvement
