How can you know your neighborhood if you don't know its secrets? For one neighborhood in Brooklyn, a secret changed the course of New York City's organized crime in 1979.
It was a hot summer day in July. Some killers entered a little Italian café called Joe and Mary on Knickerbocker Avenue in Bushwick and shot Carmine "The Cigar" Galante and two of his men as they ate lunch. Galante was head of the Bonanno crime family and was widely feared for his cruelty.
His assassination is the focus of our latest case featured in our true crime series The Tape Room.
If you have a case for The Tape Room, please email: thetaperoompodcast@foxtv.com.

I lived around the corner for a few months during the summer of 2001. The rents were on their way up then. A two bedroom unrenovated apartment was going for about $600. A decent one-bedroom, renovated between $700 -900. Back then it was heavily Spanish-speaking, recent immigrants from Ecuador, Puerto Rico, etc. I knew then it would be a matter of time before the rents got out of hand.

That's a bargain! In the worst parts of Washington Heights which is Manhattan's most affordable neighborhood you pay for a two bedroom apartment $2800.00. Many of those buildings are over a hundred years old with few amenities and maintenance.

$2,100 a month only gets you a shithole of a closet in a 5th fl, pre war walk up in a ragged ass hood nowadays, if you want to live in a nice secure doorman building in a low crime Decent neighborhood you are lookin at $3,500 to 6k Some Jack Wagon's want so bad to be able to tell their friends back home in Nebraska that they live in NYC. that they are literally rent poor and survive on corn flakes and the supermarket brands. @mtavares9260

@Dawud R. Those family did not come to NYC, they were Organized in NYC (Luciano-Genovese, Gambino, Lucchese, Bonano, Colombo). The Mafia, N'draghetta, and Camorra came from Italy but not all gangster in the US were made in Italy or ever join the Mob. Capone was born in Brooklyn and led the Outfit, which was formed after Torrio took Big Jim Colisimo out in the 1920s, independent of the NY Commission but working with NY. THE COMMISSION was started in New York after Maranzano and Masseria were murdered, in 1931. The NY Commission is independent of the Italian families but obviously work together and NY recruits from Italy. So again, the five family were organized in NY from previous groups that included Italians from all over. The Mafia is only Sicilians, Cosa Nostra are NY based families and allies.

Bushwick isn't the heart of Brooklyn. Where he got hit is literally a five-minute stroll to Queens in Ridgewood, and that area of Ridgewood that borders Bushwick always had and still has a very, very strong Brooklyn flavor to it as far as architecture and housing.

My mom was born a few blocs from there. Bushwick at the time had the largest Sicilian population in the U.S. From the early to mid-1960s there was a lot of change with many Italians moving out to Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island. But even into the 1980s there were still Italians in the area.

He was nicknamed "the cigar" its only fitting he died with a cigar in his mouth, something that wouldn't happen in modern society with all the no smoking laws. He died doing what he like to do, smoking cigars. He thought he might die of old age or lung cancer, but he died of lead poison from snubnose 38 revolvers...

People can call it whatever they want, but no doubt a very glorified way of leaving this world. Very similar to Joe Masseria going out with a playing card still in his hand . and I think Grimm, yet unique occasions like this, are 1 of 1000 reasons why most people are intrigued or even obsessed with mafia history. What other type of person but a wise guy, would Destin themselves to go out in such a swanky and fashionable manner? Although not as unique, even Carlo gambino even went out at home doing what he really loved to do.. which was watching the Yankees.

@@JP-ml1xe No question. It's just that for a long time I thought Carlo Gambino had his "fingers" in his death. Gambino and Joe Bonanno were long-time enemies and Galante was Joe's underboss for many years. All the wars - all the bloodshed that was spilled for 20 years ...I don't know - I was under the impression that at the end it was Carlo Gambino who "put an end" to it all by getting to Galante at the end. Turns out I was wrong - the dates don't match. It wasn't Don Carlo - it was Neill Dellacroce. PS. It was just my mistake.

Carmine galante was one of the toughest individuals ever to fill the ranks of the mafia. At only 5 ft 5 in tall he was crazy and a sociopath and a very good earner for the organization. He was murdered because he would not share his drug business with the commission that is a ruling body of all the mafia Administration. He would not give up a dime. And that's just cause for murdering someone? Shows you what kind of Godless lowlife cruds these Mafia soldiers really are. I feel sorry for Carmine galante's two daughters that survived him. They were left out in the cold with no money and almost no place to go. I do feel sorry for them.

Not a lie. He was promoted for this nasty piece of work on Galante and FBI footage caught him that very night being hugged and kissed by the Gambinos and Dellacroce at the Ravenite. Of course that raised eyebrows since he was from a different family. He was initially picked up and let go when his prints didn’t match what was left on the getaway car. It took a while for it to dawn on investigators that his fingertips not his palm is what was on the door knob of the car. That’s how they nailed him. He narrowly missed getting killed in 1981 at the meeting where his dad and two top capos were meeting. He fled to Florida and Napolitano sent a guy after him to finish the job.. only for the guy to be one Donnie Brasco aka a fed who promptly saw his tour of duty moonlighting as a wise guy cut short due to this particular assignment to kill Bruno. He’s been in and out of prison and is due, once again, for release in only 2 years. A movie should be done about the guy.

Good question. In a BBC documentary there was an interview conducted by Carmine Galante. He was once asked by the interviewer what would he do if his organized crime friends ever plotted against him to try and kill him. His answer was, "They wouldn't dare do a thing like that!" Well Mr. Carmine Galante, they dared, they did, and your 69 year-old Mafia Ass Got Whacked. He's sitting up there in heaven right now asking himself how this could have happened? The Paul Castellano assassination in 1985 was just as revolting. In 1985 a seventy-year-old Paul Castellano of the gambino crime family was murdered, gunned down, in a busy Manhattan Street in the month of December. It was less than a week before Christmas.

Galante wasn't smoking a cigar when he was shot. After he was shot the reporters ran to the roof and were trying to get pictures of the crime scene. Because law enforcement, who was investigating the homicide, were blocking them the reporters were yelling for the cops to get out of the way. I think on closer examination it is a BMW E3 saloon. Among other things these have the chrome strip along the side as we see with this car. I can only think you might be referring to the big Fiat 130 saloon having twin round headlights. Do you mean a different model of Fiat? There was the smaller and lower Fiat 124 Sport Coupe with twin round headlights too, but it's definitely not one of those, this car is too big. I can't find any pictures of these Fiat models with the chrome strip along the side that we see here. In pictures I've seen, the Fiat 130 saloon wipers point at the centre of the windscreen when at rest, like if you had your arms folded, and we can see that's not the case here. I can't be sure from this poor video but I'd put my $5 on it being the BMW.

Not 12. That would have been too many and would have drawn attention. It was a car full of hitmen, including one who worked with Donny Brascoe. Now, Galante's bodyguards were in on it and stepped out of the way.

A century ago Galante would have been what , twelve or thirteen years of age ? He got to grow up in an America that, for all of it's flaws at the time, was still a relatively safe place for a child to grow up in. But now America is awash in guns, and there is no authority with the power to keep guns out of the hands of deranged murderers who will do the unthinkable with them. Galante died violently, but that was an occupational hazard for him. At least he got to grow up.
