I think Karen knew about her Success but in the context of her mental illness (Anorexia is that) it took a backseat to everything that she had accomplished in her short life. As others have mentioned this illness is now very treatable today.

That's part of the illness she was incredible to everyone but not to herself, part of the anorexia she was thin but to her fat it was a massive shame and she is still hugely missed by the world

Karen was brought up to believe that her role was to support Richard's career, and that her dreams weren't important to her mother, she was somewhat of an afterthought. It turned out that Karen was the real star, which Richard handled the best he could by utilizing his arranging talents to complement his sister's incomparable voice. Yet Karen's uniqueness was still unappreciated by her mother (how could she not hear what everyone else hears the moment they first listen to Karen sing, omg). Karen had little ego because she was never told how beautiful and talented she was, or that what she wanted, really mattered. Karen wanted to play her drums and sing. Karen wanted true love and children of her own, and probably genuine affection from her mother. Karen never blamed anyone else for her issues nor confronted anyone because she didn't want anyone that she loved to feel hurt. She sought medical help for her eating disorder. She sought independence by doing a solo album which everyone that her talent had made rich and successful told her was not good. She married, and was used by her husband, just as everyone else had used her, ever since they heard her voice. Karen tried her best to be happy and had many friends who loved her. She never gave up and she had great plans for the future. Karen Carpenter is among the pantheon of musical greats. Her music still touches the souls of generations of humans born after her passing.

But you can really hear the pain and sadness in her voice. She channeled that anxiety and that pain through her music for so long. It's really a tragic story. Such a loss.

Why I think her music was so good, not only did she had a great voice , I believe whatever she was going through emotionally exuded out through her music. It was absolutely raw emotions that her and maybe only God alone will ever know. It’s like Whitney Houston, no none can really deliver like her, because I think they resignate or intertwined themselves in in the lyrics. They’re actually telling a story of themselves. The emotions are raw.

Your sensitivity to Karen, beyond the music and that perfect voice, is much appreciated. I remember back in the day when Paul McCartney said: "the best female voice in pop." She was often better than the material she worked with, but she could make ordinary lyrics sound like hymns. She was special, and I get teary-eyed as soon as she starts singing.

Anorexia was a disease that one refuses to see in themselves. Her dying from the disease raised it's awareness for what that's worth. I constantly wonder what wonderful tunes this duo could have devised throughout the 70s-2024. It's almost criminal that she left us all. But it is what it is. I'm a retired RN and understand the disease process. I was 27 when she died and I cried that day. Missing her longingly. Thank you for missing her with me my friend.

Chod, your reactions as a gifted drummer/musician are truly appreciated. Thank you for your passion and perceptiveness in analyzing the legendary Carpenters. For me to say that they are a cut above the rest is an exercise in gross understatement.

Such heartfelt genuine emotion and feeling she puts into her performance. 50 years later and still brings a tear to my eye. Love how she sings that one word, loneliness. This song is such a good example of her extraordinary talent. Notice the numerous times she doesn't take a breath when anyone else would take the opportunity and still comes thru pitch perfect and powerful. Nice reaction to such an amazingly talented duo, and band.

Hi Wilburn. To answer some of your questions about Karen: from what I've read, her parents weren't very nice to her while growing up-it was always about her brother Richard. No matter what she did, her parents never really gave her any approval or validation, they always celebrated Richards accomplishments, but totally ignored hers, so it created a bad self-image of herself, which caused her to have very low self-esteem. The other major issue that led to her anorexia was the fact that her manager-and her brother Richard INSISTED that she come out from behind her drum kit and take center stage and just sing (they insisted on this once they stated to get really big). She absolutely HATED this-it scared her to death! She literally felt safe and secure being able to just sit and play the drums while she sang-she felt EXTREMELY uncomfortable just standing there singing without being able to play an instrument, and being front and center. This became a MAJOR issue for her. I think because of those reasons, and I'm sure some others we'll never know, she became anorexic. What a shame-such a sweet, beautiful, kind and talented young woman who left this world much too early. You could almost tell something was wrong when she sang-she had this underlying melancholy tone to her singing, as if not everything was going well for her. What a loss...

Karen Carpenter was called "chubby" as a teenager. She had personal image as well as control issues from family and friends so she started dieting down to 120 pounds. Unfortunely she didn't stop and was down to 90 pounds while still inducing herself to vomit every time she ate. Her heart finally failed. The first time I every heard of Anorexia Nervosa, was when the cause of her death was being reported.

Yes, this is as I remembered her story, also. There was a movie with Cynthia Gibb about Karen's life which explained things more clearly--it was so sad the effect that criticism had on her. I remember where I was when I heard she'd died and we were all devastated and ever since, all her music has been so bittersweet.

They should’ve left her alone. “ Control” issues , ie binging is a direct result of restriction. When you stop restricting the binging stops too. It’s a survival response from the brain when the body goes into starvation mode. Our obsession with thinness and dieting are killing girls on an epidemic scale.

She underwent treatment for years. Some people are just hellbent on self destruction. She was doing the laxative thing for a while, and then moved on to syrup of ipecac, which destroyed her heart.

@@debralang9467 Karen was a one in a million voice,most of her songs had a touch of sadness in them.Her personal life story is really quite tragic,a beautiful woman those life is cut short,a tremendously talented singer AND drummer with such a pure voice,I was devastated when I heard she had died.She has started receiving help and eating again,but alas,it was too late and her heart gave out.P.S..I too saw that movie,she didn't want to get out from behind the drums but was persuaded to by her brother and the band.

Yeah, for me too. I remember when she died, I was just a young teenager, and it was the first time we ever heard of anorexia. Her death put the illness on the map in a HUGE way. That's about the only good to come from her death. Sad it took that. The world was robbed of a hauntingly, captivating singer. When I listen to her to this day her voice cuts through everything and speaks to my soul. If she were here I'd thank her.

When Superstar was released in 1971 the Carpenters were riding high. They became Grammy award winners (Close To You 1970) and had another #1 with We've Only Just Begun. Followed by two # 2's with Rainy Days And Mondays and Superstar. The reason you don't see Karen's personal issues is they haven/t yet manifested themselves. At least not publically. That would happen in a couple years. As for this time though, the Carpenters were on 'Top Of The World'. Your appreciation for Karen's artistry W R is heartfelt. That's awesome, RNB

Yes, Karen Carpenter had the voice of an Angel and it's so sad that she died so young of anorexia. Her voice was Contralto which is the equivalent of a Male's Bass. Extremely rare yet, Karen had it and brought joy to all of us with it. Her nickname was "One Take Karen" because when she was in recording, she normally nailed her songs in one take.

I believe her illness was a surprise to most people. She looked like she had gotten pretty thin in her last few years but people didn't know much about anorexia nervosa at the time. Her death brought it out into the public. Ironically, her death probably saved many lives later. She had the voice of an angel. Probably one of the greatest female vocalists of all time. I could listen to her over and over again and never get tired of her simply beautiful voice.

I could not agree more with your reactions. She always struggled with eating disorders and her death brought attention to het disease. Many women were doing the same thing so it helped many people. She was on the radio all the time and everyone loved the Carpenters!

This is probably my favourite Carpenters song. Not here for long enough but regardless of the unfortunate problems that made her unhappy, what a legacy to leave the world in these stupidly complex troubled times. We need this music more than ever today from a time when things were far less complicated. Wonderful compositions and blazing talent, while Karen's voice will echo around the world forever.

We all wonder how stars aren't always happy...they have it all. I mean look at the gorgeousness looks-wise, yet they divorce all the time. No money issues. I would imagine it is lonely there, such expectations of them. It is very sad that she went through that, I was a teen when she died and it hit me hard.

Growing up listening to the 70s music on the radio; we'd flip stations to hear our favorites from Earth Wind and Fire, Eagles, Chicago, Doobie Brothers...but, when we flip to Karen...the flipping of stations stops!

She was one of the most genuine and honest people in the world, except about her eating habits. She would just lie blatantly about it and deny anything when asked about her weight loss. The woman was taking doses of laxatives that would kill a normal person because she had built up so much of a resistance. She was also taking ipecac to make herself vomit anything she would eat when she did eat anything. Karen lived in a time when most people didn't ask the right questions because they literally knew almost nothing about eating disorders. I used to know a girl with anorexia (She recovered, thanks to a good support system) and it was just sad watching a friend slowly withering away.

I personally believe that Karen wouldn't suffer the same fate she did in 1983 if she had been going through it now. We know so much more about eating disorders and treating for them now. Also, it is harder for someone of her stature today to get away with the physical change she went through unless she went into total isolation. With the media coverage today along with social media, starving to death wouldn't sneak up on all of us the way it did back then. She would've been forced to get help sooner now.

There's a story that a shady looking dude in an army jacket came up to her in a grocery store and told her how much he enjoyed her voice. When he left, a member of her tour asked her what he wanted and "my god, that was John Lennon!" She never knew

This is only my opinion. When they first started, she was behind the drums. It was when they made get out front as the lead singer that her life-long insecurities took their toll. When she became the face of the Carpenters, in her mind, she was never good enough. One of the great tragedies in music. Gone at 32.

paul mccartney and justin haywood (of the moody blues) both said she was the greatest female pop voice in the world... streisand told her she had a "marvelous instrument".. shania twain has her her favorite female voice.. k.d. lang likened her to a female nat king cole and on his level, and so it goes....

It's actually not a band, it's a duo. Karen and Richard Carpenter, brother and sister. Richard is classically trained, so he's the music. Karen is the Voice. God Bless!

The Carpenters did great covers . They covered this one by Paul Williams . Paul Williams also wrote the whole soundtrack to the classic " The Muppet Movie " .

Her brother suffered greatly also, living in the closet and with substance abuse. Make one wonder what sort of control issues might have existed in their family growing up.

Karen Carpenter's image problems were a perfect storm of insecurities. parental criticism, and a lack of understanding about eating disorders like aneorexia. She simply came along before anybody understood that this was a mental disorder. It didn't help that her closest friend, her brother Richard Carpenter, was dealing with his substance issues at about the same time. Those around her who might have been able to help thought all they needed to do was get her to eat something. No one around her realized that she needed psychological help until it was far too late. If she came along today, in all likelihood she would have gotten the help she needed.

True, but the reason she would have received help today was unfortunately because of Karen's death. It brought awareness to the problem in a very big way and put the disorder on the map. Before that it was unheard of.

Very very well said indeed Yes everytime i watch i feel she is still here and that gut renching feeling when you come back and remember she isnt Yes to me the most extremely sad story her brother must love the memories of this but must be excrutiating when it comes to the end of the song on that beautiful way she finishes every song 😢😢 Best female vocalist period, she barely breathes between notes which is mezmerising in itself extremely good breath control effortless STUNNING IN EVERYWAY THE VOICE OF AN ANGEL

Very insightful. They made a TV movie about her life, and there was a scene where she saw herself in a store window. She saw herself as fat, but of course she wasn't. I believe that the issues happened when she was young/growing up. I know she really wanted, at least at first, to just play the drums. I don't think she felt comfortable being front and center. But when the record execs heard that pure, clear, beautiful voice, of course they insisted she sing, too.

I worked with her a few weeks before she died. I had no idea she was hurting so badly. She was such a nice lady. For that few hours we rehearsed together she treated me like I was her little brother, which is kind of funny, since Richard was actually there. He was great, by the way. A gentleman and a kick-ass musician...

I think that as she became more and more popular, and was made to perform as the up front singer, she felt naked in front of the audience. Before, she always was behind the drum set, acting as a wall between her and the audience. She loved drumming more than singing, but now she was not behind the drums, exposed, no barriers.......... So, she became super self conscious and insecure from that position. Had she just drummed, she'd have been happy happy

You never know what is behind someone's eyes and how some people feel that they can never be good enough. Many women start dieting because your body is something you have control over. It is heartbreaking.

Actually we don’t have that much control. 95% diets fail and result in weight gain - the research backs it up. Not everyone is meant to be model thin. ED’s are killing our young girls in high numbers.

I grew up in the seventies and loved the Carpenters and bought their albums. So, when she passed away in the early eighties I was so moved by it I wrote a poem about her and sent it in a mail to their fan club - something I had never done before to anyone. To my surprise I got a response from them thanking me for the poem. I still have the letter and will always cherish it.

The thing with Karen is that, you have great female vocalist that are a "dime a dozen" now a days. There's only been one Karen Carpenter!!! That's the main reason why after almost four decades since her passing, people are still floored by her!!! She didn't need the vocal tricks, she could just sing her soul out.

there was a famous interview she did where she was at her lowest weight of only 78 lbs. and she was still in denial that anything was wrong. she had such talent and was a beautiful person, it's just a shame

Back in the day NObody knew that anything was going on with Karen. We even saw her getting thiner and thiner. It was not a big thing to us but we were a little concerned. Richard said she was just sick from flu and things like that. Then when she passed we found out the truth. RIP dear Karen Anne Carpenter. An angel on earth and now an angel in heaven.

Co-written by Bonnie Bramlett & Leon Russell, with credit later also given to Delaney Bramlett (apparently due to his contract with Bonnie). Rita Coolidge has since said she should have received credit too (saying Leon, her then boyfriend, claimed her idea & work as his own, when writing with Bonnie (which Bonnie didn’t know till Rita’s book).

@@wnsafford1854: Delaney & Bonnie were, I think, first to sing this. On the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" album, Rita Coolidge sang it well; she was recorded singing it at a concert. Richard learned of the song from Bette Midler's singing it on the "Tonight" show. But Rita's is the interpretation that Karen stayed with.

It was originally released as a single, Dec. 1969, by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends, with Bonnie Bramlett, lead vocals, Rita Coolidge, back-up vocals, Leon Russell, piano & Eric Clapton, guitar. When Delaney & Bonnie did their 1972 album, they used the 1969 recording on it, which is why some sites list mistakenly D&B's as 1972, instead of as the original. There were at least 3 recorded covers (“Maddogs” album, Cher & McFee), before Richard Carpenter heard Bette Midler sing it on The Tonight show & decided it would be good for the album they were doing. Hi buddy. Yeah, you're right. Even her brother said she was basically an upbeat happy optimistic person. She did seem confident and cheerful. I was in their fanclub as a kid well into my 20s. She was nice to me and always answered my questions and even complimented poetry I sent her.

For another artist who is in a category of her own, have a listen to Aurora from Norway. To see the scope of her work take a look at "Runaway" from the 2015 Nobel Peace Prize concert (she was 19 at the time and the song is one she wrote when she was 11), the "Conqueror" any of the live clips. Aurora will have an impact on you.

I fell in love with Karen in the Seventies her smile her face there music her voice then when she died I couldn't understand why it through me so to listen to you talking about her worms my heart she spans the decades and what ever music your in to.

Believe it or not, we didn't know about her illness, because it wasn't publicized. People were much more private about mental health issues back then and there was a lot of stigma attached to it. Of course, the whole thing was a tragedy. RIP Karen!

Her death got attention and so studies were launched and we got information about anorexia and ways to help people suffering from it.

I’m glad The Crown is highlighting Princess Diana’s bulemia- people need to understand the root causes of this highly fatal disease. It is rampant in showbiz, figure skating and gymnastics. Almost killed Gracie Gold.
