A cataphract was a form of armored heavy cavalryman fielded in ancient warfare throughout Eurasia and Northern Africa.
The English word derives from the Greek kataphraktos, literally meaning "armored" or "completely enclosed". Historically, the cataphract was a very heavily armored horseman, with both the rider and mount almost completely covered in scale armor, and typically wielding a kontos or lance as his primary weapon.
Peoples and states deploying cataphracts at some point in their history included: the Scythians, Sarmatians, Alans, Parthians, Achaemenids, Sakas, Armenians, Seleucids, Pergamenes, Kingdom of Pontus, Greco-Bactrian Kingdom, Sassanids, Romans, Goths, Byzantines, Georgians, Chinese, Koreans, Jurchens, and Mongols.
In Europe, the fashion for heavily armored Roman cavalry seems to have been a response to the Eastern campaigns of the Parthians and Sassanids in the region referred to as Asia Minor, as well as numerous defeats at the hands of Iranian cataphracts across the steppes of Eurasia, most notably in the Battle of Carrhae in upper Mesopotamia (53 BC).
In this recreation of the Byzantine-Arab war the Arab lines were destroyed by the Byzantine heavy charge of the Cataphrats, after first releasing repeated arrow volleys.
The Byzantine-Arab war lasted 420 years but ended 1071 AD when the Byzantine Empire, with the help of Western Crusaders, re-established its position in the Middle East as a major power.

Byzantine empire ended when Constantinople was captured. Arabs do fast paced cavalry based desert warfare using deep flanking maneuvers to surprise the enemy. They were light and fast. armours slow you down in the desert and it becomes very hot .You made a wonderful video no doubt. You do have the skills to grow big. So I would recommend you to research deeply about Byzantine Arab wars starting from the battle of Yarmouk to the fall of Constantinople.

The onslaught of heavily armoured professional cavalry formations were the pinnacle of military technology during their time. This was especially true in the East. The Parthian Cataphract was the precursor to the Medieval Knight. A heavily armored cavalier riding a gigantic charger able to handle the weight of an armored warrior in chainmail carrying a lance, shield and sword. They were along with the famed Parthian horse archers 🏹 the type of army which the Romans weren't able to readily cope with. The Horse Archers at the Battle of Carrhae unleashed a storm of arrows upon the Roman legions of Marcus Licinius Crassus and they were constantly replenished by camel 🐫 caravans 🚐 of arrows 🏹. The Roman Cavalry was overwhelmed by the Cataphracts of the Parthian army. Marcus Licinius Crassus son Publius was in command of the Roman calvary and died with the rest of the Roman horse 🐎. His father died on the field later.

@Kong King The structure of the first Persian (Achaemenids) cataphract and then the second Persian (Sassanids) were very different than the Assyrian's cataphracts. Besides, the Iranian were Assyrians' neighbor, and later they became a part of the Iranian country, such that the cultures and techniques were fully mixed. But, the Europeans want to gradually hijack anything belong to others and mark them under their own names. 😉

NICE BUT INACCURATE This short video is pleasant to watch, but gives a wrong idea of how cataphracts were used. - First, they are much too heavy to sustain speeds as shown here ; the horses would get blown quickly. In his military treatise, Byzantine emperor Nikephoros Phocas clearly states that they should move at a canter, in a very tight formation and never take part in pursuing the enemy. - Second, their heavy armor severly limits their vision and ability to turn and face an opponent not in front of them. They moved forward and charged in a wedge formation (if Byzantines) or in a straight line , very close to each other. Also, their flanks and rear need to be protected. The Byzantines had several light and heavy cavalry units all around them to cover them until they could smash into the opposing command (at the time, Byzantines, Arabs and Avars disbanded when their leader was killed). Armenians and Parthians who failed to do so got decimated with slingshots or attacked from the flanks or rear by the Romans and scattered ! -Third, the main weapon of the Byzantine Kataphractos was the mace ; the manual mentions some spears and even bows, but not lances. Still, non-byzantine cataphracts (Seleucid, Parthian, Roman, Sassanian, Bulgar, Mongol, Tibetan, Chinese ...) did use a one or two handed lance. I hope I didn't spoil anyone's fun, but I like accuracy.

Thanks for the information! I will gradually put more and more attention on historical accuracy, but for now I am keeping it in light version :) It is a video for fun to spark interest in the cataphract. I might make a 2nd video about the Cataphract with more focus on the history and less on the battle effects later on.

I don't remember where I read it (sorry) but the cataphracts did use lances, but because they didn't have stirrups they used them overhanded like spears and didn't use them until the moment of contact with the other formations. This is not to say that the mace wasn't the primary weapon, but also I'm sure some cataphracts used hammers swords ect

@@Dontolar Indeed, most cataphracts used lances, one or two handed, but not the Byzantines - for the most part. Byzantine Kataphraktoi are described in the Praecepta Militaria, a manual written by Emperor Nikephoros Phokas (allegedly) in the tenth century. They formed in a single unit of 384 or 504 men, twelve ranks deep, in a wedge formation. The first four ranks are armed with maces (sidirorabdia), swords (spathia) and sabers (parameria). They were called "Sidirorabdatoi" after their main weapon and carried neither lances nor spears. From the 5th rank onwards, the outer ranks mixed macemen and spearmen/lancers (kontaria could mean spear or lance), the inner files were achers (toxotai) and javelinmen (akontistai). The reason for maces is that they are the most efficient weapons against heavily armoured opponents, ie the ennemy leaders. In a standard formation, the kataphraktoi were protected by 500 light cavalrymen on the front and 9 units of 500 regular heavy cavalry (kaballarioi) on the flanks and rear. They charged no faster than a canter and remained in a tight formation. The Praecepta Militaria is difficult to find ; those who wish more details could try to find an article from "Slingshot" by Dimitris Kristodoulou. The article ("The nikephorian byzantines according to the manuals") dates back to the 80s, but the british review still exists, so it should be possible to get it. Other types of cataphracts are described in "Cataphracts" by Erich Anderson and "Roman Heavy cavalry" by Andrey Negin (Osprey). Good reading !

@@Militaryhistorydiscipline Understood, I am looking forward to it. By the way, I read an article some 30 years ago, but I'm afraid I don't remember in which magazine and I can't find confirmation elsewhere. Still, it is worth being looked into if you should have the opportunity. The article said the last cataphract charge occured in the 20th century (1959?), when the Chinese invaded Tibet. The Tibetans still had a unit of cataphracts that charged the Chinese. They met with some success, as the Chinese burst into such uncontrollable laughter at the sight of those medieval knights, that they forgot to shoot at them ! That could make a nice video !

"Cataphract" could mean any amount of armor for horse or rider. If you are going to begin to talk about cataphracts you have to start in the east and more specifically steppe tribes' bodyguard. The Achaemenid Empire introduced the Nisaean heavy horse from Media which bred the most suitable in the empire for full armament. Arche Seleucia, most notably Antiocus III reasserted control over the eastern satrapies in 209BC and brought back to the west reforms in the army that saw the use of more armor on horsemen. The Romans tried to implement their own in the east, but had limited success using them.

Iranians including Parthians and Persians were the inventors of the Cataphract. NOT the Romans or the Greeks. When Rome lost the entirety of their Legions when invading Persia in the battle of Carahe, that's when they realized that they need to adopt the Persian/Parthian methods. it took almost a century after that for Romans to completely adapt it in their military and through the Roman conquests of the northern and western Europe this originally Iranian concept was also introduced to them.

Cataphracts are the literal pay to win players nowadays, they just shower armoursmiths with money to make them the strongest and best armour possible, if they existed today their "squires" would be wearing gucci and armani

No they didn't. In fact the Seleucids began arming their cataphracts according to the Parthian style. It's the other way around. When the Seleucids eventually adopted the cataphract from the Parthian, these were recruited from the viceroyalty of Media, which means they were drawn from Iranian pro-Seleucid nobility and their freemen.

You heard that Bannerlord give us the horse archer type Cataphracts. Yes we have the Bucelarii but lets just have the option to upgrade them where they have the heavy armor. They dont get lances only swords and bows but still it would rly fit and balance it out. Kuzaits get not only massive cav but their fucking horse archers are tanks. How come the Empire never got it right when history shows us they did.

The fall of Constantinople was the capture of the capital of the Byzantine Empire by the Ottoman Empire. The city fell on 29 May 1453, the culmination of a 53-day siege which had begun on 6 April 1453. The fall of the Persian Empire was due to Alexander The Great I believe.

@@Quranlife-mi8mq Oh you are that type of troll. You know how many kingdoms and empires failed , you have no idea. By your logic why is there and country named Italy with city Rome when clearly the Roman empire failed at some point ? So many arabic or mongolian kingdoms fell that u cant rly go about yelling muslims have the perfect war score. I see what you are trying to say but it just flops on its head like a rotten fish since it hold no logic.

Lol and just pitting them against the lowest tier of Aserai infantry? Couldn't you try pitting them against the Aserai veteran infantry, Royal Mameluke Palace Guards, Aserai Vanguard Faris, Aserai Heavy Mameluke Cavalry and Aserai Master Archers and then take another look how this battle would turn out?
