This was a helluva good review. I think it's a really good way of putting it, it really is. Though phonies won't ever side with the fact, that kills me.

I think that the teacher might have molested the kid, driving him to suicide. Since Holden wasn't sure why he killed himself, the patting might have been a subtle message to the reader that this is true. It can interpreted different ways though.

That's a damn interesting comment. Mr. Antolini is a remarkably ambiguous character imo. I think he genuinely cares a lot about Holden, I don't think he was trying to use him, if at all (he does just pat him on the head after all), anywhere close to how much he was trying to look out for him. But it's ambiguous. The guy has quirks (being married to a significantly older woman perhaps being one). I tend to think Antolini is just a guy is just a very bored and intelligent teacher who cares for students more than average and also shows affection more than average but really only meant to help Holden. I think it's really common for people to think he was a sick perv mostly because, when reading Holden's perspective, a guy whose emotional issues extend well-into his sexual insecurity, we naturally feel just as horrified as he does - when really, it may well have just been an affectionate patting of the head.

one of the better reviews on youtube. i disagree with the contrarians on youtube. especially the ones with the most views. i think caufield is right to be cynical. to dismiss him as hypocritical misses the point, and does not necessarily discredit his views.

For me the two key metaphors are that used by Mr Antonini? who speaks of a special and terrible type of fall where the person falling never touches the botttom...a metaphor for depression and feelings of alienation and existential angst possibly borderline personality disorder. The second falling metaphor is the title; the catcher in the rye whose role is to catch children playing in a rye field near a cliff. This represents the nostalgia of childhood and the fear and aversion to growing up...the protagonist cann't deal with the demands of growing up, becoming more autonomous, forming mature relationships and mantaining friendship. He intones that he ends up in a psychiatric hospital and your point about suicide is very interesting thanks for your review.

About the teacher scene, I didn't see that as if he was trying to molastate Holden. What I think is that the teacher's intention was to check if he was ok, like if had fever or something, I guess Holden was looking really a big mess, cause he was practically not eating for two days, no shower, no tooth brushing, a hangover and he was so stressed that he imagined the warse. Now something else I keep thinking during the whole book was how on earth a kid spends practically 3 days out of a intern school and there parents are not even notified? I guessed that when he'd come to visit Pheobe, she would say something like "Mother and father are looking for you all over the country".

He had already gotten kicked out of his school, so I think administration already expected him to leave-hence no notification to the parents. How did you interpret the ending of the novel? Do you think he improved or stayed the same?

I can see where you’re coming from, as Holden didn’t take good care of himself and contracted TB.

Great review. I've always loved this book. As I listened to what you said about him being lost i remembered when i was younger and loving this book I was excruciatingly and hopelessly lost. ...as for putting the coat over the suicide's face and the questionable incident with Holden...I never thought there was actually molestation in mind (until I read it for the sixth or seventh time last summer) but what you said made me wonder something I never imagined: the possibility the kid killed himself because the teacher had molested him. Is that what you were wondering? If that's what Salinger was saying that would double the depth of the already perfect book. Anyway, it was a pleasure happening upon your review.

It's just so ambiguous. I do tend to think though that Antolini did not molest James Castle, nor do I think he would have done anything like that with Holden. Did he want to get sexual with Holden? Maybe. He's a something of peculiar guy (being married to a significantly older woman could be some sort of psychological clue - I have no idea). It seems to me though that Holden's panic and fear upon Antolini patting his head was a reflection of lots of things with Holden's other fears, implicit pas traumas, and insecurities. Maybe Holden connected the dots of Antolini having possibly molested James Castle without even being conscious about it enough to include it in his take on what he was thinking during the head patting incident. Again, ambiguous. Keep in mind too that when that goes down, Holden's legitimately sleep deprived and not thinking lucidly. But the fear he experiences during it is passed on to us thru his pov, with all intensity, despite a lack of clarity. Just to wrap up, consider too how much Antolini is trying to help Holden. For real. Like, do pervs devote that much care and guidance to someone they want to abuse?
