The Caucasian Ovcharka is undoubtedly one of the internet's most fantasized dog breeds. The breed is known for being a ferocious and fierce guardian dog breed.

My dad use to own Caucasian shepherd long time ago when i was just 7 and first started school. I use to ride on his back and sometime he would pull me on sleds to school in winter. I miss him forever my very first best friend. Our friends ship was cut shot due to war in Yugoslavia. We had to move to different country , dad got pulled in military. Dog went to dads friend who had dog shelter and farm. As war progressed and all that horrible shit, dog got sold to somebody years later. At least he was lucky to find new home too. But i gotta say its one of them dogs that will love u and watch over u forever, and even if u were to slip and fall he'd run up to you to make sure that you're OK. Hes was always kind to all my friends and family but on alert when a stranger would be around. In summer time me and other kids would play in this pond shallow water. He would run up to us destroy our shirts and shorts pulling us out of water. Lol he always thought we were in danger and drowning.

I adopted a Caucasian Ovcharka. He was being kept in a 10 foot square yard, never walked or groomed. I had him for 3 days and he adjusted so well and would growl at anybody who came near the house. And that was after 3 days! He is a beautiful natured dog. As you say, great with other dogs and kids. I had a German Shepherd and I was attacked and he ran away!! I know for a fact if Dylan, my boy, had been there he would protect me. I'm only 5 foot 2, and 115 pounds and he's so easy to handle, no pulling. But very suspicious of strangers.

Yeah the original stock came from Georgia those are the aboriginal breed, the U.S.S.R. came and took the best examples of the breed and bred them in the Red Star Kennels for military purposes enhancing their size, aggression towards humans, and their dependence in working with human handlers for military applications. Today there are two variants of the CO, the Georgian Aboriginal and the Soviet Military style.

Thank you for this video. We have a new puppy and this is the best source of practical info about the breed that I've encountered. I look forward to raising our little girl who came all the way from Evrazia Kennel in Bulgaria. My first dog was my boy, Caleb, a St. Bernard who I had from birth to death. I miss him every day. When he died just shy of 12 in 2010, we got EZ, our 200 lb English Mastiff from puppy time. He's now 7 and is a happy, healthy big wimp. Since EZ is so gentle, we got Able, a fila Brasiliero, when EZ was just a year and a half. He came from Brazil and never was properly socialized at an early age and was a problem child until he turned 4. Unfortunately, he died unexpectedly a month ago from a GI bleed. Now, we have KC, a little female Ovcharka puppy. Although my other dogs will always have a part of my heart, I can already tell that KC is the most exceptional of them all. I look forward to our life with her. Thanks again for the video, Brad. Great info that encourages me even more over my choice of this breed.

She was very gentle with my children but a TOTAL NUTCASE with Strangers. Extremely Aggressive. (I thought it was great). She was doing her job. She passed away at 15.5 years. We now have a pure breed Boxer. Awesome Dogs. The Caucasian Ovcharka sound like a great family Guard Dog. It's what anyone should look for a Dog and companion. LOL! It does make me sound a little crazy. But keep in mind, a lot of theses dogs have been added over time. Luytiy, in this video, is 10 years old. He's basically retired from "work"... Also, I didn't have livestock when I got Luytiy, if I did I probably would have gone with the CAO which I added much later when we did have stock. But, yeah, I do come off pretty paranoid when you don't consider the context and history.

The Ovcharka is an old dog breed far outdating the USSR (and communism) that originated in Caucasus region. It was bred to protect herds from,Wolf packs, foxes, and Bears. It has two diffrent sub breeds, Plain Dogs tend to have less furr, whilst mountain dogs have a much thicker coat.

The caucasian ovcharka in the video is definitely USSR red star developed dog. The caucasian livestock dogs like nagazi, gampr, north Caucasus volkodav etc are the ones that are thousands of years old. The Soviets took these aboriginal dog and did artificial selection to "improve" the breed specially for increased civil aggression

Excellent video, did a good job explaining the Caucasian Ovcharka. Mine died 8 months ago, I had her for 9 years. She was awesome and I loved her beyond words but it was basically as you described, although she did guard me and everything in her territory with EXTREME diligence. This breed does not know fear. She would literally take on anything, even large numbers of anything without hesitation and once she engaged there was no calling her off or stopping her - short of very physically pulling her off. Ovcharkas are often described as only average intelligence and poor obedience. I have found both of these observations to be untrue, however you must understand the breed to correctly determine this. Caucasians do not view "mindless obedience" as having any value. They will not be made to do tricks - which includes sit and stay - they consider themselves to be equal to humans. Think more in terms of you being the mayor of the territory and the Caucasian as the sheriff. As the mayor you make laws like when is feeding time and so on and the Caucasian will not challenge this. They will go along with these kinds of rules but the minute the sheriff needs to be involved then the sheriff is in charge. The sheriff will neutralize the threat (people, neighbors, any kind of animal, could be absolutely anything) and then stand down and the mayor takes back over. They learn everything as quickly as any dog you can imagine but that does not mean they will be tempted to try anything they do not judge to be essential. They are not food driven or treat or object driven. I could offer her anything for a trick and she would usually do it a time or two almost right away to demonstrate that she understood and then would just turn her nose up to further treats and not do the trick. She was "very civilized" - cooperated with the other dogs I had, practically house trained herself, did not chew up stuff like shoes, only barked when she perceived a direct threat (someone walking by on the sidewalk was an indirect threat to be observed, the minute they started toward the door she would go to DEF CON 1 to announce direct threat imminent that she would shortly be handling unless they stopped and retreated immediately), would stay around me ever watchful but not underfoot, etc. When it came to things that are usually used to determine obedience, Ovcharkas are typically bad as mentioned because they do not see the importance of "sit" for instance. As long as they are alert, available and watchful (which they always are, no kidding with this) then "sit" does not seem to matter to them so they don't do it. Note, they DO love their human - yes main one human or maybe two and rest of family and other pets are tolerated and accepted but their attention or praise is not wanted or appreciated. Mine would doze in my lap and show me deep affection but she really did not want or need petting, effuse praise or other kinds of "snuggling". If you are wanting that then this dog is not for you. They often look like a giant teddy bear that is all fluffy but make no mistake this dog is a ruthless killer at a moment notice and about as cuddley as Rambo) I hope that all makes sense and helps to understand this breed better. She was the best dog I ever had (and I have had the honor and privilege of having a lot of dogs over the years - Shepard, lab, border collie, pit bull, spaniel, jack russell) and also I found her to be extremely affectionate in her own way - more than any other dog I had. I also considered her to be the smartest -yes, even over the ones mentioned - but like I said she did what she judged best without consideration of emotions. If you are ready for a partner who would without thought or hesitation trade her life for your safety, who never takes a day off and is on guard 24/7 ALWAYS and you are an experienced owner who understands the need and drive of the breed - then the Ovcharka is a great choice. If you want an obedient cuddle monster, then this dog is not for you.

@fluffyusa 7 жыл бұрын
Your dog was no different than my Baloo who s an Akbash/Anatolian Sheperd. Low obedience, on guard 24 7, aggressive, but loves his family. The main difference is only in the size at which the Caucasian Ovcharka are a lot bigger than an Akbash/Anatolian sheperd. LGDs

Randy Douglas thank you for the thoughtful remark. I am terrible at texting and often find it hard to express my exact points. I lived in a subdivision and my dog was welled liked by those who knew her (everyone) and they were not afraid of her because CO are known for stable trmpetments, unlike some breeds that people fear because they don't know when one might snap. She lived indoors with me and even slept on my bed. She had a small yard but went on long lengthy walls without a problem, but if someone had tried to say rob me she would have not hesitated a second in a ruthless attack. As far as the trick remark, she definitely knew I was the boss and would listen obediently. A strick command was always followed without command, but a casual command like you you might say go sit down while I make dinner....she might not do that without a firmer command. I must can't say enough things about her...she was gentle and almost telepathic, her love knew no bounds and her devotion was unquestionable. You have to be a highly experienced owner or I would not recommend one. They are powerful and do NOT respond to any rough handling like a spanking for bad behaviorviour, the most effective tool is showing them your disappointment and they typically won't do that behaviour again. You only have to show them once or twice and they understand, even things that are not their concern. Of course sit stay, etc are essential and she did these things without complaint or hesitation, I was trying to make a point that these are highly independent thinking dogs and treats, praise and other usual methods are not going to train tis breed into a loving family member. Sorry if my original message have such A low opinion of the breed because that was not my intent. In fact, of all the dog breeds I have had and trained, she was the best and I would not hesitate in getting one or more if my circumstances permitted. Please feel free to comment or disagree or ask more questions because CO are in my opinion the ultimate dog in every way. Best Regards, Julia

I also ment to comment on the remark about never taking her in public for fear she would attack without control. She NEVER did this or seemed tempted to, she was not looking at people to notice or pet her and was basically very aloof. S When we had guests we would just say one time friend and she would go lay down somewhere because she had no interest in getting to kmow them. She NEVER but anyone but for sure she was always on guard and ready should a real threat arise. If we were walking along and a young man came running aggressively at us because he missed his basketball shot or something like that she had the intelligence to realize no danger and just ignored him without me saying a word or putting pressure on the leash. She was extremely intuitive in so many ways but I did not ever fear that she would suddenly decide to bite without warning or provocation like some breeds are known to do.

this breed is from kazbegi, Georgia. and then taken in Russia. you say that this breed is from Caucasia, yes it is but to say properly this breed is from North Caucasia, from Kazbegi and Kazbegi is Georgia. There is Georgian shepherd and Caucasian shepherd both origin from Georgia.

Red Star kennels developed these dogs to work prisons. The indigenous breed ranges from Dagestan all the way to Azerbaijan. They were mostly concentrated in Georgia and Armenia. The Armenian variety tends to be a more short haired breed used by shepards very commonly for wolf/bear protection. Armenians also gave them a nickname “Gelxext” which roughly translates to “Wolf choker”. With that said, the best examples of this breed of dog came from Georgia and that is why quality obsesses Red Star kennel Russians drafted specimens from Georgia. For the record I’m not Georgian, but give credit where it’s due. Best raw variety comes from Georgia with Armenia in a close second but with short hair. These dogs are no joke, experienced handlers only.

Because the dog breed was registered by the USR, the FCI standard of this breed indicates that its origin is the USSR. However, the breed is native to countries of the Caucasus region including Georgia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

Came into this with an open mind. I've heard all the misconceptions before: "Developed by Russians" "Russian military dog" etc. Also not a huge proponent of "It's a Georgian dog" stance (me being Georgian not withstanding, people had those dogs on both sides of Caucasus mountain range). But a guy, claiming to be an expert on the subject, saying this is a relatively new breed - couldn't get past that point. It has been around for centuries... Maybe it wasn't cataloged by kennel societies, because those stuck up snobs can't be stuffed to look past their backyards, but that's no fault of the dogs. Russians love to take credit for a lot of things they had no part in achieving. Developing a super strong guard dog is just one of those things.

EXACTLY!!!!!! My girl is 9 months old, Ovcharka is just the name the Soviets dropped on it because of Stalinist regime didn't want anything with reference to Georgia or the Caucuses. The first mention of the breed is over 2000 years in the army of Armenian Tsar Tigran II as camp guards. This guy knows sweet FA about the breed, they still not fully recognised by many kennel clubs.

I've fallen in love with this breed and have a 4 year old male, who we've had since he was 8 weeks old, sent straight from Russia. He's really good with my 2 year old daughter and is a big baby around my wife. He weighs in around 160lbs, and with that said, I'm more scared about someone sneaking in our backyard and him fu**ing them up, than I am of him getting out. Even the the local pack of coyotes take a wide berth around our place. This breed has a well balance temperament, but will take things to an unstoppable level if needed. He loves the local dogs in the area, but something he gives off makes them very unsure about him. The only downside is that we have to give him a sedative before any vet visit...lol

Thanks for the video, I love this breed...since you're so experienced with dogs do you think a guard dog if not trained would not defend it's home? I was watching a video here on youtube and it showed when an intruder entered a house the guard dogs whilst they made a lot of noise, when he approached them, they cowered at the last minute, they even ran off to play with each other at some point while the fake intruder was in their compound.

It depends on many factors. For example, you can buy a Caucasian Shepherd Dog in the USA, then socialize it as an ordinary pet, introduce it to people and dogs from childhood on your territory and on walks, as a result you can raise a very well-mannered and friendly dog that loves everyone and wants to everyone to play. On the other hand, you can buy a working line Caucasian Shepherd Dog from Russia and limit its communication to only your family, your pets and a few friends, as a result, there will be such a guard on your territory that neighbors and postmen will go around your house on the other side of the street , this dog will not hesitate to fight with any intruder, whether it be an armed person or a grizzly bear, and this is generally without training. With proper training, you can make both of these types obedient and courageous in defense of the dog.
