With a useful load of about 900 pounds less pilots so about 600 pounds that's only 100 gallons of fuel. At 9 gallons per hour that's only 11 hours of flight time. They would have needed close to 170 gallons of fuel to make that flight. that would give them a ramp weight of almost 3000 pounds! What an I missing....

This is somewhat common. They add portable fuel tanks. They don’t always make it. I was working on a container ship going from LA to Honolulu around the early 2000’s. One plane went down because they lost oil pressure. We were going to rescue them, but another ship was closer. Both pilots survived.
@a21npilot91
@a21npilot91 Жыл бұрын
Not so common, oftentimes they are delivered by container ships, with wings being detached and then reassembled by qualified mechanic from manufacturer. However in some causes it is possible to make a ferry flight, which is sometimes cheaper and allows to get plane significantly faster to the spot. For small single engines planes it is oftentimes subjected to pilot availability, as not many would agree on that. Also for an owner have less to worry about if he get it by ship.

There's a woman that works for Daher who has done 900 North Atlantic crossings... TBM's though, so even though it's single engine, it's a turboprop. Her 900th was in the new TBM 940.
@a21npilot91
@a21npilot91 Жыл бұрын
@@jasonjackson1708, crossing Atlantic is a bit safer, as they took northern route over Greenland, Iceland and Faroe Islands, where they have more chances to actually land somewhere if engine fails. They also make stopovers about every 800NM for refueling, so auxiliary tanks are not needed. Still impressive and hard job.
@jasonjackson1708
@jasonjackson1708 Жыл бұрын
@@a21npilot91 No question, even though there are definitely some aircraft requiring ferry tanks -- but definitely NOT TBM's. :) North Atlantic is definitely more treacherous as far as weather and wind, at least in most cases, though. Still, anytime you're crossing an ocean, that point of no return is very real... and in a single-engine, it just takes one failure to be screwed and ditching, and hoping for some boats... :(

What's crazy is the modifications they had to make to the airplane. If I remember they took out the other seats and put fuel bladders in place. The C172 generally burns around 9-11 gallons per hour and holds about 56 gallons from the factory. To fly 18 hours would require roughly 1,100lbs of fuel to fly. Most C172's gross weight is 2,550lbs and an empty weight of 1,600lbs, giving a useful load of 900. So they must have gotten a special permit to fly overweight and with those fuel tank bladders. Imagine taking off next to 1,100lbs of Avgas...

I read a story about this flight, it was back in the day and while he was checking in giving position reports over HF frequencies, this airline pilot asked him what he was doing all the way out over the ocean alone doing this delivery. He told him that he didn't want him to do that anymore because doing these crazy deliveries to build flight time and earn money was dangerous. He said that when he landed in Honolulu he had an airline ticket back to California waiting for him. The young kid kindly declined. Can't imagine doing this!!

Simple, you do a emergency landing on water, then contact ATC your current location. You have a inflatable raft with you, with enough supplies to last in the worst scenario of stopping right in the middle. A C172 landing onto water is dangerous and scary, but is definitely survivable with no injuries. Raft in the back, leave the plane and wait for help, possible it could take 10s of hours to arrive.

Don't be surprised people. Small planes are ferried for longer flights than what the fuel tanks can hold by putting ferry tanks in the cabin. VERY common. You also have personal flotation devices for you and your co-pilot if not flying alone as well as you must have an emergency ocean life raft if the ferry is over ocean. A good example of the modded game argument is BO3 zombies custom maps/mods compared to BO2 or BO1 zombies maps/mods. Their is exponentially more maps and mods for BO3 zombies even tho it came out after as is a “bigger” game. It’s simply because the game is better not because of any other reason.

i wonder if it was flown VFR or IFR cuz VFR navigation must have looked pretty funny. „Okey here we got the ocean and on there another you see?, yess we are on the right track” 😅
@redbaron6805

It would have flown VFR. There are no navigational beacons on this way for an IFR flight.

IMPOSSIBLE-we had a 172 in the 60s. It’s a low/slow flyer. We upgraded to 182 in the 70s, and a 210 in the 90s. It just can’t be done. 😊

My dad talked to them flying over Hawaii. My dad does Hawaii flying, so he talks to all the other airlines. He was talking and had a great conversation with the Cessna. They put an enlarged fuel tank in the interior, then when it gets delivered, they put the seats back in and removed the bigger fuel tank.😅

If you watch the KZfaq channel FunForLuis or something similar, they circumnavigate and fly from Hawaii to Cali. Same flight, Backwards. And you can watch the actual flight with all of the modifications they made to the plant to make it possible.

My dads buddy was actually the one to do it. It had all of its interior taken out and had some fuel bladders. It also had some form of auto pilot so he slept while doing this.

Did the pilots have boats out in case something ever happened? The fact a single engine plane, and a Cessna at that, was able to take off with a “crew” that had such massive balls blows my mind 🤯

They follow shipping lanes, and are in contact with commercial traffic along the path in case something happens. There is months of planning and permitting for flights like that.

Done a few of these (in a Cessna 210)! Hilo to Pago Pago was the longest leg I ever did, think it was 2200nm. Poplar Grove near Chicago to Horsham, Australia (about 6500nm) with 4 stops.

For a small turboprop plane it does have great fuel capacity and efficiency to be able to fly ~2,400 miles. Except, a lot of people would expect that this Cessna would not make it, like they're not supposed to do that.

They wouldn’t make it if it was a normal Cessna. They took everything out of the cabin except the pilot’s seat and filled it with extra fuel tanks.
