I am a commercial millwork and cabinet designer. Nothing thrills me more than walking into a place and seeing the finished product. To tell someone that I designed everything that is wood in this building and see their reactions is a joy to behold. People using have no idea who I am or what went into making it, but they like the finished product.

I agree. I’m a designer working on a number of large projects in nyc. Primarily transportation and parks, but we’ve been consulted for some of the high rise buildings being popped up, and it’s nice to see that my design will come to life and I can look at it knowing I did that even if nobody else does.

Affordable land to build low-rise is just substantially closer to the Loop for Chicago than it is to Manhattan for NYC. And then also Chicagoland's growth as a whole has slowed substantially so that's further economic disincentive to build more skyscrapers in Chicago.

And as I said, I have seen with my own eyes how sophisticated and professional the construction process is. One of the most fun parts, having one go up across the street, was watching the team erect and then disassemble the tower crane. Having been watching a mid rise go up across the road to where we live in downtown Manhattan over the past year I have been fascinated at the process of construction. But I’m afraid watching this video made me laugh out loud several times. First of all every single worker on our site is of Latin American decent, a reality not reflected in the carefully selected interviewees Cheddar have offered up. It looks for all the world like a closed shop situation, which is also reflected in their ‘we are above everyone else’ behavior. Far from being the proud professionals we see in Cheddar’s video, the construction workers themselves have gone from hero to zero by causing problems with the local community. Large groups of men indulging in after work drunkenness on the street, accompanied by the verbal abuse of passing women. Frankly disgusting behavior but even the NYPD can’t really do anything about it. Then came the cheating part. They cynically attempted to raise an additional five floors on top of the approved plans, hoping once it was already built the authorities would decide it was easier just to look the other way. I’m told this is common practice. The current situation is that we, the neighborhood, having initially been excited at watching this building being constructed, are now collectively very much looking forward to watching the process of these lawless misogynists deconstructing the contraband floors, having been forced to do exactly that by the city administration. Which I’m told is what happens (and too often). So, what sort of venal developer would condone such foul antics on their construction site? A university no less… As far as the work on site was concerned the process looked sophisticated but essentially routine. All risks managed. Safety built in. That much was impressive. But no more so than watching a well drilled racing sailboat crew going through their paces in any kind of weather. That said, go for it. Its exciting work. As is being a pro sailor. But if you are interested in a career in this specialist form of construction please be more like the people we see in this video and less like the reality I have encountered on my local street in New York City.

New York would have a lot more flexibility building new skyscrapers if there weren't such restrictive building rules, especially the floor-area ratio rules which didn't exist when the iconic skyscrapers were built. Remove the FAR rules and there's a lot more options with a lot more potential economic development, which would also help with a lot of the supposed "lack of land" issues which are to a large extent more about legal issues than any genuine physical restriction. The building codes and "extensive permitting process" mentioned in NYC are unnecessarily restrictive and this is a major problem. Some of this is necessary for safety, but a lot of places don't have many of these rules and manage to have lower accident rates.
@taoliu3949

Having just watched an NYC construction crew build an additional five floors on top of their planning consent, hoping nobody would notice (they did) my view is that the regulations are probably in need of further tightening. These people are lawless and need policing. I entirely reject your contention regarding density regulations.
@joshuazelinsky5213
@joshuazelinsky5213 Жыл бұрын
@@francispower1418 That's an argument for further enforcement or better oversight. That's not an argument for tighter regulation. That's essentially akin to people arguing at the beginning of Prohibition that because people were violating Prohibition, tighter regulations were needed to enforce it. The bottom line is that right now, New York has incredibly strict regulations which make building new things very difficult, even when everyone wants them to be built. And the city suffers massively from it.

A lot of cities including my city of Birmingham Alabama has been going toward BUS RAPID TRANSIT (BRT) which is laid out like very similar to the sub way Transit but on Wheels and above ground. A whole lot more economical and safer. But of course nothing will be as unique as the underground Subway
