It happened to me the first time I had surgery. I was terrified that I would be in pain. I didn't know what they did to you when they put you under- tape your eyes shut, paralyze you, incubate you. I was racking my brain to figure out how to let them know. My blood pressure went up (because I was scared)and they gave me more sedation and it put me back under. However, during the time that I was awake, I could hear everything that was going on and could feel the pressure of where he was inserting the rods in my abdomen. I heard the gauge of the instruments he was asking for. When I went back for my checkup, I told the doctor what I heard and he finally believed me and realiz3d that I was speaking the truth. Now I tell every anesthesiologist about the experience to make sure it doesn't happen again.

@@allways8782 doctors know they have to give me a LOT of pain meds and anesthesia during surgery, since I woke up SCREAMING in recovery after my knee surgery. I remember hearing screaming, then they ordered pain meds, and when the screaming stopped, I remember thinking: "oh, that was ME screaming!" (I was a teenager when this happened.) In those situations, there is a history of gaslighting and doctors attempting to cover up by drugging the patient in attempt to make the patient loose their memories of event. A well public instance is Sherman Sizemore. Another recent instant occurred in St Louis during a hernia surgery but the doctors documented the instance. Glad your covering this topic.

I had night terrors as a child from a memory of waking during surgery. I had a repeating dream of seeing the bright overhead lights, being aware of stitching, feeling myself grasping at something, and hearing the voice of the doctor and a nurse saying "I've got her." I woke from this dream too paralyzed to move. Then, I had to get up and walk through our house to calm myself down. I was just a little kid. I never told anyone about it until decades later. I just suffered this event and the memory in silence. I finally stopped having the dream. But, before any surgery, I now tell the anesthesiologist about my experience, and that I don't want to go through that again.

She called the anesthesiologist and he came and asked me about it then I never saw him again and no one in the hospital would ever talk about it. I became taboo to everyone. I wasn’t just aware. I was paralyzed and it was terrifying, especially when the surgeon opened me up from my sternum to my pubic bone!

Happened to me twice. The first time was in 1996 and I am still having screaming, suffocating nightmares from it. My husband knows to pull me up fast because I can’t breathe. I was still awake when they put the succinylcholine in and I was trying to scream, no “sucs, no sucs”, but I couldn’t yell or breathe. Since then, I have had nightmares and panic attacks. 2nd time was during hip surgery but they hadn’t given me succinocholine or intubated me. I woke up to them hammering but it didn’t upset me because I could breathe. I must have said something because I heard them talking about me being awake and then went back out.

If your surgeon and anesthesiologist don't believe you, don't go through with the surgery. Doesn't matter if it's right before, you can still revoke your consent. Assuming you live in a place where it's possible, keep trying different doctors until you find someone who takes you seriously. Which, I know, takes a lot of energy and time. (Also, if you're up for being a case study, reach out to a research hospital and see if they want to figure out wtf is going on with your body that you don't react to anesthesia or opioids normally)

How horrible! You are already scared to death to go under anesthesia. You’re scared to have surgery that could be life-changing. You might not have the greatest anesthesiologist or the kindest one so you’re now even more scared. You go have surgery and they didn’t do the right thing or something happened and you’re awake through the whole surgery and fill everything. That would suck talk about massive medical PTSD. I would not even know how to recover. I already suffer from it already, but to be left awake by accident or whatever happened to this person is come completely awful. My heart goes out to them.😢😢😢😢😢 I guess the only thing somebody could do with the situation is counseling immediately tell your surgeon immediately what happened report everything ASAP. And make sure that you get help.😢

When I opened my eyes the first thing I did was say “I love you mom.” I had said this because the doctor doing the surgery was my mother’s boss and she was allowed to assist him removing me and my brother’s teeth so she was the first thing I saw. This why I still have my gall bladder and thyroid. I told my parents when I had my tonsils out that I remember everything during the surgery. I was 5, so of course they thought I was being dramtic 😶. Pain medication provides absolutely no relief for me, so surgery is a definite concern. Had a melanoma removed, and felt the surgery after 10 minutes (local anesthetic), and I maxed out on amount they could give me. Root canals/tooth extractions- 5 minutes before I feel it. Any opiates, regardless of the make/model: vicodin, norco, percocet, percodan, Dilaudid, demerol?- no effect. Of course the assumption is I am a drug seeker, so drs always ask what does work for me.😂 Aspirin. One chewable childrens aspirin. I once had an ED doc (I work in a hospital) ask if I wanted him to write a prescription for baby aspirin, and I told him no. I said I have a contact at CVS that would hook me up. . . .and no one would even know. Lol. Yup. No surgery for me unless I am in critical condition.

I was terrified but they put me back to sleep really quickly. When I woke up I was sobbing though. 😕 I was glad that my mom was there when I came to (the only surgery she was able to be at, all of the rest of mine were after she passed.) I really hope that never happens again. I was awake for kind of a while before my first MRI under general… I cracked up the staff because I made a comment on their jokey banter… they definitely thought I was out of it by then, probably bc I was keeping my eyes clamped shut to avoid looking at the MRI machine. And then was immediately given something that really did knock me out. Lol.

I told them mid surgery it hurt and in that moment really was just hoping everything would stop. Which begore I kept requesting GA to be told no even tho I had done what we had before every other eye surgery where I had GA (like 18 means i magically must stay awake?). The surgery prior was awake and I got anxious so I said last time I felt a lot of anxiety being aware in the OR and then this happened so next surgery I was under GA thankfully. Then the next I had a different surgeon who I requested GA and even explained I have ptsd from this time that has had me hospitalized multiple times to be told idc you're awake in the OR then after bc I felt all again (I genuinely believe this tome was on purpose not numbing me bc dr did nothing when i said it hurt and started having a panic attack other than say breathe instead of giving anxiety meds or numbing the eye) so my psychiatrist wrote a letter going this pt was okayish now she's active SI bc you wouldn't listen then that opthalmologist left like 2 months later and my current has always agreed to general for eye surgeries and in office procedures I get breaks and med students hold my hands and I have my stuffed animal and i get a little math infodump in to calm down.

It happened to me. I let them know whenever I need surgery again. Unfortunately the result is they now knock me out so hard that I can’t wake up and am out of my head for days afterwards. I’ve tried asking for a happy medium but they don’t get it.

Hi. AT 1000a.m. On January 18,1998 my appendix BURST!!. At midnight that night i went into surgery. They knocked me out around 900pm to prep me. I woke up TWICE. first when they were shaving my very hairy belly/abdomen area. I remembered a beautiful nurse moving her face looking down at me and said "look whos awake". Then, during the ACTUAL SURGERY i woke again. I could feel them inside my guts. It didn't hurt but i twitched n opene my eyes. Dr. YELLED ANGRILY "HES AWAKE!!". NEXT morning he asked me about both incidents. I told him not to worry about it, i wasnt upset. After all, he came in at night n saved my life. Ive told every anesthesia technician about that time n it never happened again. 😮

Thing is, how do you prevent it? I have Estler syndrome and I’m terrified to anesthesia they give you so much. They kill you or you’re feeling it. There has to be something. Oh well tell your doctor afterwards that’s a cop out and all that does a scare people

I did tell him and he gaslighted me making some excuse. I still have PTSD. When you wake up in the OR with a breathing tube shoved down your throat and can't tell anyone even if it was for the two minutes it happened to me and I remember, I know that was not supposed to happen. Years later I got the same anesthesiologist and told him. I was terrified and still am. I didn't remember waking up til the recovery room which was what was supposed to happen the first time.

I'm curious if it happens more often with redheads. I haven't had it happen to me, but I discovered that I do need more anesthetic than most other people. A doctor once used a term i had never heard of, "redhead syndrome". I lol and he said, " no, I'm really serious". I've since done a bit of research and it turns out that it's true in many cases. It's because of a gene called MC1R which often results in our hair color, but also means that we need more anesthesia, as well as a bunch of other traits like the ability to gauge temperature changes. Haha weird right

@KB-ct7th Ай бұрын
@MiaKKay~ Not to discount your experience, but receiving Versed is sedation, often done without an anesthesiologist. General anesthesia would include intubation and requires an anesthesiologist. Sedation and General are two very different animals. I’m still sorry you went through that experience. Be well.

Not what he's talking about, but I woke up during knee replacement, I heard hammering/sawing (?) but felt and saw nothing, there was a fabric curtain in between. I opened my mouth to speak and a voice said "Oh, I think she's coming round" and the lights went off again. I'd had a back lock, so assume they topped it up with something else, I vomited for hours overnight.

You know this happened to me, when I went back for my post surgical check up I mentioned it to the doctor and he kind of laughed it off. The surgical assistant was also in the room at my appointment and they brushed it off until I repeated a bit of the conversation back to them. She got nervous and left the room and the doctor admitted that they did have that conversation and then blamed the anesthesiologist

Yes, if you are awake and paralyzed and feeling pain, your heart rate and blood pressure should increase as a response to this stress. You might also start tearing😢. These signs should alert the anesthesia provider that something isn’t quite right, and they should investigate the cause.
