London’s skyline is about to change more drastically than perhaps it ever has done, with 436 towers either planned, proposed or already under construction. Some people aren’t happy about it. But do the protesters, campaigners and lobbyists have a point?

London needs to keep innovating. As long as they're bought for the right reasons.

They actually have less density than the old terraced streets they replaced in most Instances. Residential areas on Manchester are now utilising the original terraced street plans. So as these gaps have been filled with modern brick houses they flow right into what's left of the original houses. It's given the city it's character and feel back as the modern houses slot right in. It gives the old place a real character , as it would have been when first built. It's a good vibe and the planners really knew their stuff back then.

@@geoffedwards-tb4kp This is only true when comparing it to certain developments. Overall when looking at the grand averages, high-rise is much more dense than terrace housing.

@@josephscott7239 Well that ibvious certain developements normt denser in poulation says it fir its self. What i mean is origibal terraced housing in its times was a lot denser than what is left of it now. Still it is relative as you say in cases sir.

although I very much agree, I see most brutalist as an infection of beautiful old buildings, but thankfully now, I can see the incredible destruction of these horror full brutalist structures, replaced with elegant and extraordinary buildings such as the shard or the gherkin (I want to be an architect when older, working with Foster+partners for work experience, so excited!)

Toon Nufc True. I want it to be like Dubai or New York eventually. Also bigger roads and malls too. London has quite some big malls like the Westfield mall. Manchester and Birmingham are also going upwards now. I think Scotland should do it too, but they like the old.

I don't know why the growth of London skyline is generating so much controversy. London has to grow no matter what. It can't afford to remain an old city forever. Those who are against the high rises should think out of the box and get out of their comfort zones.

Nothing's wrong with building more skyscrapers in London as long as the city increases their standards in modern architecture. They can't just approve buildings that pretty much look like any other building in the world. The skyscraper projects should give the London skyline a unique identity. The Shard, Gherkin, London City Hall, and 20 Fenchurch Street are very good examples of London's modern progress.

What great skyline? London never had a great skyline historically, it's a myth. Even Canaletto romanticized it. London is a city of streets and squares and has an amazing and fascinating range and variety of architecture from all ages. Only in the last 20 years has London started getting a remotely distinctive skyline.

When they say these buildings are “full of affordable housing” who are they talking to? Affordable to who? Wealthy stock brokers, lawyers and CEO’s? It’s not affordable to anyone other than the upper bracket of society and that’s not a ton of people.

In residential areas of Manchester, gaps and new housing in a lot of place's has been filled with terraced housing along the street plans that were originally terraced streets . It actually gives the city it's character back as it flows perfectly with the remaining old terraces and adds to the Cities original Victorian character. The new builds fit right in and you can see the actual character of the original city. I'm all for city centre and special districts (like "media city" old docklands ). This gives central business districts, like Down town Manchester a real big city feel because of its A, modern high skyline and B, it's character and architectural history evident in the beautifully adorned and designed Georgian and mostly Gothic Victorian masterpieces that Manchester has in plenty. In Manchester this juxtaposition of the old and new is working really well. Manchester is alive again. Keeping the old preserved, whilst adding absolutely top draw Modern buildings in the city centre and over at Salford Quays, with residential brick terraced housing on the old street plans is a success.

We need to build denser not necessarily taller, if we where to bulldoze interwar detached housing and replaced it with Victorian style mansion blocks surely we could solve the issue of turning small parcels of land into large towers.

There's so much uglyness in London and people complain about some skyscrapers that add some presence and i personally find skyscrapers attractive. Yes it's disgusting people are being forced out of London but skyscrapers are not to blame for this. If there's alot of brown field land for housing then use it, but that needn't have anything to do with the luxury end of the market.

The notion that a City has to expand rapidly is outdated; expansion needs to be progressive and purposeful. Planning policy needs to reflect this and contain a strategic vision for the City.

I see both sides. But look at it this way....if people want more suitable houses then move to outer london and get the tube in. If they are building for the rich in towers for big jobs then unfortunatly thats the way it goes. Its what happens everywhere and makes sense. London needs to keep up with the future demands. On the down side Londons traffic is already bad so how on earth are they going to accommodate more traffic on old styled roads. You cant build towers and not think about the traffic.

If they are going to keep building skyscrapers they need to recognise that people don't like modern styling. New York has already started to move on from the "glass and steel" trend, and those buildings fit in a lot better with the historical ones surrounding them, as well as looking a lot more unique without relying on having a weird shape like most ones in London do.

Demolish the disgusting 1970's / 1980's Council houses and replace them with modern, detached lovely houses and make the suburbs look nicer and more appealing to live in. Then we may not need all these big towers

London looks great with these modern tall beautiful glass skyscrapers....people who oppose it should go to their types of places( where there's no multicultural environment) ;but rather xenophobic societies exists who are right wing people who voted for Brexit ;I mean places far off from London type modern societies...where only people like them exists....-!!! I mean that lot of rats in our society who are against multicultural environment ;I m specifically pointing to such people who don't like immigration -those people always moan that foreigners take away their jobs...I mean such people who are racist ;such people who don't like economic progress & moan about fast pace of life & specifically places like London -birmingham...so such people shouldn't bother staying here in such advanced financial centres of the Britian....they should go to their types of places 4-5hrs away from London...
