This video is about The Chapel of the Holy Cross. The chapel was commissioned by an artist named Marguerite Brunswig. The story goes that Marguerite was inspired by a trip to New York city. Her vision was one of a christian cross superimposed on New York's newly built empire state building. Before settling on its current site in Sedona, Arizona she apparently attempted to get a building like it constructed in both Los Angeles and Budapest Hungary to no avail. Marguerite was married in 1938 to Tony Staude and they moved to Sedona. In an airplane over the area she saw a site which she decided was perfect for her chapel, However, the site was owned by the US Forest Service. With connections and hard work she eventually secured government approval and hired a San Francisco based firm called Anshen and Allen to design the chapel. The project architect was Richard Hein with design direction by architect August K. Strotz. The church is reinforced concrete. The walls are 12 “ thick at the base and the concrete is sandblasted to expose the rough aggregate. Although the building is clearly man made, it appears to grow directly from the rock with its stiff and powerful concrete roots. The church took 18 months to build and cost approximately $300,000k at the time. The building was completed in 1956 and eventually donated to the Roman Catholic Church. The building received the AIA’s award of honor in 1957. It’s also designated as a national landmark. This designation goes a long way to preserve not only the building but it’s site and surrounding land. It’s visited annually by hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world. There were 3 million visitors in 2017. I’m Doug Patt. We’ll see you, next time.

Dear Doug Patt. This is a little message of appreciation. I am living in the UK in London and currently applying to do my RIBA part 2 in Architecture. I watched your videos before applying to do my part 1 and I remember enjoying them very much. I remember staying up late and watching them over and over! :'D And they helped me know what to say in my application and interview process when I moved from Cairo to London to start studying. Thank you so much for all your hard work and passion that you've put in this youtube channel. Sincerely, Laylac T. RIBA Part 1 Iraqi architecture trainee living in the UK

Beautifully designed in the red rock. Sedona is such a cool place and this was definitely worth seeing in person. In pictures it doesn’t seem as large- but when you’re hiking up the ramps to get to the chapel you feel it’s magnitude. The history behind the chapel is almost as artistic as the chapel itself. Thanks for sharing this.

I can not believe I lived in AZ for so long and the first time I went to the chapel was just about 5 yr ago. A stunning, spiritual spot. It has a nice gift shop in the basement as well.

Nice video, sir. I've always admired that building. The siting is spectacular, but the masses of its composition are so good that it would work on virtually any steeply sloping site. It is only about 4 hours from me, but I've only seen it once when I was just a little kid. I don't know what motivates a person to build a religious building that is so small it could never fund itself via a typical congregation. I guess the woman had tons of money burning a hole in her pocket. You mentioned that she had been wanting to build a chapel with a huge cross on it since the thirties. I heard that she originally talked to Lloyd Wright about doing a design for her, but WWII intervened. Lloyd, as you know, did do a chapel design that has become pretty well known, Wayfarer's Chapel, in L.A. It was completed in 1951, a few years before Staude hired an architect to start designing The Chapel Of The Holy Cross. I wonder if she was spurred to get going on the project when she saw Wayfarer's Chapel in the glossy home magazines. The firm she hired also did the original Eichler houses. Eichler had lived in a FLW designed house years earlier and wanted his tract homes to have a bit of the feeling he got from it. They were supposedly admirers of Frank Lloyd Wright as well, and were willing to design use some of his principles in their house designs. My guess is that Staube wanted a Wrightian feel as well, but for some reason she wouldn't deal with Frank himself, who's Taliesin West studio is only 100 miles south of Sedona. And she also didn't go back to Lloyd it seems. The chapel design that they produced for her is completely first rate. After looking at lots of photos of buildings by Wrights students, and even non-students who just copied him, my take is that buildings by many of the second generation architects produced stuff better than many of Wright's own designs. They seem to have more charm than most of his work has. E. Fay Jones admired Wright too, and he designed a number of buildings that exceed in beauty and warmth as well. Thorncrown Chapel is his most noted work, which came decades after Wayfarer's, and Holy Cross, but it is in that Wrightian mold.
