Louis XV’s hot chocolate recipe:
“Place an equal number of bars of chocolate and cups of water in a cafetiere and boil on a low heat for a short while; when you are ready to serve, add one egg yolk for four cups and stir over a low heat without allowing to boil. It is better if prepared a day in advance. Those who drink it every day should leave a small amount as flavouring for those who prepare it the next day. Instead of an egg yolk one can add a beaten egg white after having removed the top layer of froth. Mix in a small amount of chocolate from the cafetiere then add to the cafetiere and finish as with the egg yolk.”
Escape to the chateau with ’The Chateau Diaries’ 🏰
This channel follows the adventures of chatelaine Stephanie in her French 16th century home, the Chateau de Lalande, in the heart of rural France ❤️
We share our life in this ancient chateau in the heart of the French countryside, and show you the diy, renovations, crafts, cooking and gardening that are needed to bring a home like this to life!
A very special thank you to all of you who have become Patrons of the Chateau de Lalande. You have made The Chateau Diaries one of the top 400 Patreon accounts in the world, and have transformed not only our lives here, but the future of this beautiful chateau! Even a person who has done a special course on historical textile designing will not be as enthusiastic as you are .. you don’t need any degree you’ve been born with this aptitude … the pull out wooden bed was marvellous.. I think it could be pulled out to 175 cms in length ..? The amount of research you’ve put in for your cultural history is commendable.. fantastic ..!!! The recreation of the French era at Christie’s was unimaginable..!!! Architectural Digest should come and take a look at La Lande..!!!

Excellent!!! Because I studied fabric design as a student abroad I see the smaller details. The wallpaper is exquisite. What I love the most is the bamboo ground, that also has the look of branch coral. This design is extremely versatile because you can go so many places with your decor. I loved that Stephanie and the curator from Christie’s discussed how rooms evolve. Using a decorator shouldn’t mean that your personality is lost in the room.

In the same vein as the commode that pulls out into a camp bed, some very good friends, now passed on, had a mid-century cabinet that pulled out into a dining table up to 8 feet long--the leaves also stored in the cabinet. Very ingenious, especially since they had a fairly small 2 bedroom apartment with no dining room per se. The table/cabinet was against one wall of the living room.

About Georg Haupt and the camp bed. Georg Haupt actually signed the bed all along the whole front of it! ”G. Haupt Ebéniste du Roi à Stockh”! But then again he was amazing. Even a simple visitor to the State Bedchamber would be able to see that Georg Haupt made the bed. Apparently it follows the designs of Christopher Fürlohs dresser at Castle Howard and Haupt made two.

You mentioned an old table layout of food, if you want to know more about the dishes of that time then a copy of Charles Elme Francatelli's The Modern Cookbook from 1853 is worth ordering. He was Queen Victoria's chef. Its a fascinating book and you can still get copies. Thanks to Dick Strawbridge of (Escape to the Chateau on Chanel 4 TV) getting it for a present I was intrigued and managed to get a copy online.

His page must have been enormous. 175 meters equals 574 feet, LOL. I know you meant centimeters. Just teasing. But wow, that commode/camp bed! I've never seen another. What a great thing to have for a flat. Do you know what they used for the "parquet de Versailles" effect on the floor in this vignette? I'd love to do that in my library. Someone in one of the vlogs mentioned a tile that looks exactly like parquet de Versailles, but I haven't been able to find it here. Your vignette packed a lot of design punch! Well done, Stephanie.

I'm glad you included that bit of interview... I've been thinking that the boldness and exuberance of the the last two of the three vignettes perfectly capture your spirit, but that in your decorating at the chateau you play it just a bit safe most of the time. You should really go for it from now on, don't be afraid!

This is fabulous. What a wonderful opportunity to share your taste. When in America; you want to purchase Potted Plants… NOT POT PLANTS😏😳😂

This is what I came here to say! Almost as bad as the time my aunt bought a ceramic planter in Mexico and told the border guard crossing back into Arizona that she was bringing back "a little pot." 😳
