The Cheapest Beef Stew You'll EVER Make

Beef stew is actually quite an expensive meal to make. I usually add lots of red wine, herbs, nice cuts of beef yadda yadda yadda. However, in keeping with the channel's new direction, I have created a beef stew that costs around £5 and will feed a family of 4 with plenty of leftovers. Obviously the price will fluctuate depending on where you shop, what deals you can find and of course how much you spend on the main ingredient, the meat.
I used some yellow sticker reduced beef mince for this, but shop around and see what you can find for the best price you can afford.
To make my budget beef stew you will need:
►750g of beef mince
►2 small onions
►3 medium carrots
►2 large potatoes
►About half a diced swede
►2 bay leaves
►Few splashes of Worcester sauce
►Dumpling mix (optional)
►About 1.2 litre of beef stock or enough to cover
►Salt & pepper
►A little oil for frying the beef

Well hello cherub, how the devil are you? That looks scrummy and we are all going to be looking for cheaper meals the way energy and food prices are going. Mince and a whole chicken are always an economical buy in my view. You can do so many different things with them and both are equally tasty. I always had to be an economical cook because we never had a lot of money and I always scrubbed my veg and if I wasn’t leaving skins on for the nutrients I’d freeze them and use for stock. I’d save everything from onion skins to cauliflower leaves. I’d box the stock up in smallish tubs and re freeze. It was great for soups, stews, risottos and even some pasta dishes. It was always a surprise as to flavour, as it depended on what kind of veg scraps I’d saved that week. I’m just on my own now and I still make it but don’t use it as often and sometimes have to throw my scraps away. I always feel a bit sad at doing that, like I’m saying goodbye to a flavourful friend 😂😂😂 Thanks for the recipes and your hard work Adam, it’s much appreciated. I love your channel, you cheer me up. Thanks, Adam! You've put real thought in the recipe. Stews are a fantastic way to use all sorts of vegetables, inexpensive cuts of meat and all sorts of add-ons like peas, cabbage or other "soft" vegetables. Hearty and warming! Would it be conceivable to rank veggies by cost and come up with recipes based on that? For example, (potentially incorrectly) assuming that onions are somewhat inexpensive, would it make sense to cook French Onion Soup?

Dumplings, my way: 1 egg, flour until it is like a firm bread dough, add about a teaspoon of cardamom, pinch of salt and a teaspoon of sugar. Mix well. Shape with two wet teaspoons and drop in to the broth/stew/soup of your choice about 10-15 minutes before ready. They grow quite a bit, so it is a good thing to make them smaller than you think you should.

Good one! I do wonder about energy-efficient cooking. I wonder how much energy we lose 'round the sides' by frying or boiling on the hob - as well as cooking with a lid on? My foodi 'feels efficient' because I can pressure cook or slow cook and it does not get hot to touch - can't say that for a traditional hob pressure cooker, though they are cheaper. The foodi is expensive and I don't think I use the air-fryer function enough to justify the extra over a device that can saute/slow cook/pressure cook, like a Crockpot Express Pressure Cooker. I haven't tried one but its less than half the price of a foodi - and sometimes InstantPots are discounted too. If I'm right and giving up the hob is worthwhile - even though electric is generally more than gas - it would be interesting to know where the crossover is after the spend up front on one of the newer generation devices. My mum used to have a small hotel and the only catering piece they took with them when they sold was a free standing combi-microwave. It wasn't cheap, but it would roast, grill, oven and microwave - and whatever you did, the outside never got too warm to touch, which tells me that the energy went into the food, more or less. Can't say that of the 'stylish' steel Baumatic ovens I have. Don't go there.

i appreciate it's not this, but i make a cottage pie using oxtail soup as the liquid part. fry mince/onion as normal, then empty a can of oxtail soup into the pan with a few beef oxo cubes/salt/pepper and simmer down for 6-8 mins (add worcester sauce if you like it). then transfer to ovenproof oblong dish, allow to cool for few mins then add the potato topping in batches (so not to sink it into the beef mixture) and under the grill to brown the topping and transfer it to the oven for 30-35 mins. absolutely beautiful.

Errrr.... Mr. Garratt; you're making a meat stock that you can use in lots of dishes. Freeze some in ice cubes, cheaply getting freezer costs an' great for future. I know yo'u're about about low costs but maybe try using my suggestions?

You know you can make Indian daals for pennies. Last a few days too. And then once a week eat a meat dish. If you’re looking for real budget meals

Misses just got into hello fresh. Could you do a take on those recipes. As she likes the already segregated ingredients and meal time has to be healthy. Personally I would eat meat until I turn into a butchers bin. But yeah give me something impressive to make. But not sweet potato frittatas. 🍆🍆

Nice recipe mate, but surely wouldn't it have been cheaper to make your own dumplings, not having a dig just asking.

If you have some beef suet in already then yes. But suet costs around £1.60 a pack so in this instance it was cheaper to buy a pre mix
