When it came to heating and cooling my shop, I needed to find the cheapest HVAC available. Like many of you, I went through all of the normal methods of HVAC, but found that nothing could compare to the price and efficiency of the ductless mini-spit heat pump. I chose to use two Mr. Cool units on my shop the heat and cool the 3150sf space. Going one step further, I found scratch & dent deals on these units and installed them myself. The Mr. Cool DIY line is great, but far more expensive than the Mr. Cool Advantage system. I was able to install 95% of the system myself, and have an HVAC tech leak check and evacuate the system to finish the install. These systems are whisper quite and produce incredible heating and cooling.

This is my favorite channel on KZfaq. Not hyperbolic. I really appreciate the fact based detail you go in to. As someone that cares a great deal for just the facts, I am very grateful. You have saved me countless hours of research. On another video you illustrated how the depth of your geothermal lines affects the seasonality of your system...pure gold. My only minor criticism is the fact that your contoured desk, from which you record, makes it look as though you are talking to us from a manhole. Keep keeping it real.

We have a 3 zone 220 ductless and 2 stand alone 110v ductless. While monitoring our electric, the 220 unit running 3 zones is cheaper Kwh than the 110 units... Especially in the winter. BUT... By having the stand alone 110 units... We always have backup heat in the event the multizone unit fails. Positive is... Even with all three units running (3 zone 220) and (2 individual 110 units)... Our electric bill dropped in half from our conventional hvac system.

Garrett, great videos! On the shop wifi, I just hooked up my shop using Ubiquity Nano Beam 5AC units. Incredibly reliable, fast, and cheap. As long as you can see the house from the shop you are in business!

Great choice, those mini split heat pumps are so much more efficient than resistive heating. Thanks for scratch and dent tip! $40-$50 / hour is very low. Check amazon, people report paying $1,500 to have a single mini split installed! Labor is crazy, and it's not that hard to do the entire install (I did) with very nice tools I bought and paid for themselves the first install (Sman 360, Yellowjacket flaring tool and torque wrench).

Another good alternative for shop is a package unit that sits outside and ducts into the building. Common on Mobile homes, and some very old house that are retrofited. Very easy to install and require no Freon Lineset work

I just added a Gree mini split in my living room. My remote has a thermometer built in. Your supposed to keep remote near where your going to be working mostly. At least that’s what mine says. Good job installing systems. I went with Gree over Mr. Cool because of customer service.

Great video. Could you do a comparison video between the mini split and your diy geothermal, giving pros and cons for each and which situation each one is best suited for. Thanks!!

We're completely off grid in WTX and have two Fujitsu mini-splits in our 1100 sq ft house. Roughly 28 SEER. Super efficient. I find they are great for cooling. But even in WTX where we don't get that cold, I think they suck for heating.

Weird. I heated my house with a. Mitsubishi no problem. And I lived in central pa. Where it does get cold.

@@dreamleaf6784 we added propane heaters to heat the off grid house. The mini-splits just couldn’t do it. These do not have the electric heat assist. Just straight mini-splits. Maybe that’s why? Anyway, the AC part is working overtime these last two weeks. Consistently hitting 108-110° outside and we’re keeping the house a consistent 76-78° inside and not having to worry about ERCOT shutting us down.

@challenged1 how well does this heat your 3150 sf space? I have a 3000 sf building and may have to replace what I have. Does it have any trouble maintaining 68 degrees in the winter and 78 in the summer if you were to try to maintain those temperatures?
@Challenged1
@Challenged1 8 ай бұрын
They would run all the time to try to maintain those temps during winter and summer. I sized these to make a 15-20 degree difference in my building while I'm working in it. They do work very well though.

Garett I have a 1500 sq ft basement that needs less heat and air but more dehumidification. Would a unit like you purchased from Mr. Cool work for dehumidification for the majority of the time? Does it have a dehumidification setting you can control?
@Challenged1

No..... U see an HVAC system is more then just heating/air conditioning.... The v as in ventilation! An air conditioner with a simple compressor isn't a HVAC system... There's no circulation of clean fresh air into the room An HVAC system is ideal for many because it's possible to lock everything up insulate well and keep the place well ventilated with lots of oxygen and a good temperature Relatively energy efficient but depends obviously but u get what I mean.... To call a air conditioner a HVAC is extremely misleading There's no fresh air circulation
@Challenged1
@Challenged1 3 жыл бұрын
It depends on the number of air changes in the space per hour. This is a metal shop with plenty of air changes, negating the need for dedicated fresh air.

@@Challenged1 OK..... But you're still advertising for a air conditioner not a HVAC system... Someone who might not know better could google "what Colling heating and fresh air system do I need for my home" see the words HVAC read that HVAC also ads fresh air... Exactly what was looked for... Then google cheapest HVAC system m and find you're video and simply copy the name from the description and order from home depot/... (Yeah exaggerated but u get what I mean) You're a bit misleading man... There's a reason we have different words it's not just semantics.... For some people air circulation can be important

Technically there's no fresh air through the units, but I'm sure there's adequate air leakage around his roll up doors. Also many codes don't require ventilation air if there's operable openings of a certain size to the outside and the roll up doors should qualify for that. I liked and enjoyed the video! Thanks for the installation and cost insight.

You're dumb. Every HVAC system does this exact same thing. A ducted HVAC only gets DIRTY air from one room and moves it into another room. None actually get clean fresh air which ONLY exists outdoors. This is called recirculation, and you're the one being misleading. Recirculation is a form of ventilation, and these mini splits are plenty good at moving air around. So no, a mini split does fit perfectly into the HVAC category, there's no argument other than ignorance.
