CHEETAHS face a critical moment in their history, with numbers lower than ever and an increasing threat from conflict with human activities and shrinking habitats. But a group of dedicated conservationists at Cheetah Outreach in South Africa has taken on the plight of the majestic big cat with unwavering determination. Harry Hinds has worked with animals since his early teens, and now at 27 is Assistant Curator at the non-profit organization's facilities in Somerset West and Franschhoek, where he has formed an incredible bond with the cheetahs on-site. Harry told Barcroft Studios: “You never take the respect that the cheetah has for you, or the respect you have for a cheetah for granted. They are an apex predator, so you’re always cautious, you’re always aware, and you’re always respectful.” Harry shares Cheetah updates on his instagram @harrythecheetahhandler and Cheetah Outreach's website can be found at cheetah.co.za

Cheetahs are apex predators, but amongst the big cats they're probably one of the most inquisitive animals out there. They don't usually look at humans as prey, which is why it is easier for them to let their guard down and trust us. At the same time, it makes them a lot more vulnerable. This is a group of people doing a splendid thing. Humans aren't particularly selfless most of the time so...I wish his team all the best

Cheetahs probably don't view humans as a threat either necessarily because wild animals will attack anyone and everyone they view is a threat or encroaching on their territory. These people hand raised these cheetahs from a few weeks to where these cheetahs are raised by humans and are well socialized with humans so it's different from trying to domesticate an obviously wild, feral animal. But that doesn't mean they can't ever completely let their guards down either because the cheetahs aren't fully domesticated and never will be. Dogs and cats have a thousand years of breeding and domestication, cheetahs haven't. Even though they are raised by humans at a young age, they are not fully used to living with humans like this. They don't have the instinct for it. They see the humans as their caretakers and sometimes their friends and playmates but deep down, really deep down, they register that these humans are not a part of their species and it's unusual to have this kind of living arrangement with an outside species. The fact that they don't usually see humans as prey and that they are more inquisitive out of wild cats actually helps quite a bit. You just have to accept that these are still wild animals and always will be. And thankfully, this guy understands it and gets it.

Apex isn't exactly true, throughout the cheetah's range they fall prey to hyenas, wolves, lions, and other predators. They are great hunters, but they are vulnerable, so not a true apex predator, that's more of a lion, tiger, wolf or cougar classification.

Funny thing is, everything he says about the cheetah notwithstanding their size, applies directly to house cats. They will definitely form stronger bonds when raised from a kitten, clearly have their own people, and their affection towards a person is closely linked to their trust in you. Pound for pound, though, a house cat is far deadlier than even a cheetah.

Are you trying to rehabilitate these cats? Cuz if you are, STOP PETTING THEM LIKE THEY ARE DOMESTIC!!! They are gonna wanna rely on humans for food and cuddling when they see tourists in thier new territory. And when people see that wild cats are 'friendly', they are assuming the worse and they soon get mauled. Wild cats aren't called WILD for no reason! Petting wild animals like these should be prohibited.
@Angelbabebri

They say in the video that they are hand-raised ambassador cats, they raise awareness about threats as well as raising money to protect the few wild cheetah left. Unfortunately there isn't enough "wild" spaces left for these incredible animals so these kind of programs are necessary to help increase their habitat and educate the public. Not so fun fact; without the amazing work done by these conservation programs, it's estimated that the cheetah would have been extinct by 2012.
