I never realized how much work really goes into this! Definitely a traditional craft. I hope it stays alive.

There are waaaaay simpler ways of binding a book. This is the crème de la crème.
@robertphillips93
@robertphillips93 3 жыл бұрын
@@BexMcInulty And there are also way more involved ways . . . the raised hubs on this example are, for instance, a decorative stand-in for the appearance of a book sewn on cords and attached to split boards. As a craft, this sort of bookbinding is all but gone. As an art, however, many of the methods will survive -- with a much smaller clientele and higher prices!

I love my maths and physics and electronics textbooks, they are my friends. I found your channel, so that I can learn bookbinding techniques and repair my old books and ones I purchase online. Bookbinding is such a beautiful trade to watch when done by Artisans.

I'm just watching your spot on Alan Titchmarsh and had to say how much I enjoyed it. My mum was a bookbinder, seeing all the old tools being used took me right back to my childhood watching her as she sewed books making them good again. She also used to work on the big bank ledgers, so many happy memories and I feel very proud of the amazing work she did.

Now I understand why the binding of valuable books in leather with golden letters never can be done automatically by machines, and why this costs a bit, and why some editions are limited. Very good and instructive video. Thank you. Regards from Germany.

I am so grateful to know that you will keep this tradition alive and well. I would have loved to apprentice there with you. I am certain that this would have been a very interesting and fulfilling job. Warm regards, from Canada eh!
