One of the cooler parts of the chess scene in the film is the bishops are symbols for watson and watson’s wife, who in sherlock’s mind, absolutely must not die. And by sacrificing almost every other piece on the board, are preserved

Personally, I believe that the bishops are actually meant to represent watson and simza due to sherlock's line, "we each have two bishops" shortly before the cut back to the party room
@o..o5480
@o..o5480 2 жыл бұрын
This scene actually has a hidden meaning. The queen was supposed to be Irene Adler, who Moriarty thought was his biggest threat, the two bishops were John Watson and Mary Watson, who Moriarty underestimated, and the rook is Lestrade, another one that Moriarty underestimated. At the end of the day, it's the ones he had underestimated that caused his defeat

@evilkingstanley
@evilkingstanley 2 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that taking the queen was the big mistake that lost Petrosian the game and in the movie, Moriarty killing Irene is really what seals his fate. After that reveal Sherlock is clearly enraged and will settle for nothing less than the complete destruction of Moriarty and everything he stands for. Such an incredibly well written movie, super underrated.
@devagr
@devagr 2 жыл бұрын
I thought the queen was supposed to be the brother who was disguised as an ambassador, since his death coincided with the queen sacrifice. The brother was their "most important piece" because he was the evidence of Moriarty trying to start a war and he know a lot about his operation.
@quantumvideoscz2052

@@Carl-Gauss So first of all, checker is played on an 8x8 board containing 64 squares. It doesn’t matter that all the pieces can only ever move or half of them. When Gotham says all things 64 squares, he’s referring to the board. Not the mobility of the pieces. Secondly, it’s a clear joke. Are you just completely unaware of the fact that it’s a joke? If you’re not then why in the world are you trying to over analyze it? Are you unaware of the fact that attempting to over analyze jokes ruins them? If you’re not then all you’ve done is intentionally go out of your way to ruin a joke. The only thing you’ve done by writing that comment is attempt to make my joke less enjoyable by everyone else who reads it in the future.

After weeks thinking about this chess scene, i finally found out why in the film they managed to play the entire sicilian variation played by Tigran Petrosian and Bent Larsen but the color swapped and somehow the tempo still matched up. The reason is Sherlock, in the film, never played c4 (1:49). That makes even tho in the film white is doing the sicilian defence, the tempo still matched up because black didnt play 1 move that Levy mentioned

I did read a while ago that the color flip on the movie happened because on Sherlock books and movies, he is obviously an investigator, solving the crimes or villain's plots, so Moriarty has the first move. Then Sherlock can actually acts, always one step back trying to catch him.

And I guess the most poetic/symbolic piece of fiction from this game was the fact that Sherlock and Moriarty were SO close and trying to one up each other that....moriarty was ACTUALLY just ONE move away from checkmate (not that Sherlock would get back rank mated but still) I think that's beautiful...and shows how calculated and insanely strong they are (obviously in movie)

I love how in the variation of that particular game they played, the "villain" side of the board had almost a wild, sweeping outburst with the queen for a couple of moves while the "protagonist" side of the board was much smaller, yet more meticulous in its movements.

I'd also like to point out that this in-movie variation of the game fits beautifully with the situation. Sherlock sacrifices his most powerful piece in what Moriarty interprets as a blunder, just like how Sherlock ready to sacrifice his most powerful 'piece' in the movie to win the long game.
@julianmcmillan2867
@julianmcmillan2867 Жыл бұрын
Not just the long game, but he was willing to sacrifice all of his pieces if it meant protecting his bishops. The film's commentary states that during the game, the two bishops represented Watson and Mary, two people he could absolutely not have in danger. But they were also the two that did the most damage to Moriarty, who in turn underestimated them. The rook, representing Mycroft Holmes was also underestimated. And the Queen, the Queen was Sherlock. Lo and behold, he throws himself off of the balcony and takes Moriarty with him, sacrificing himself for the long game of defeating Moriarty and bringing his expansive criminal empire to rubble. I f*cking watched this movie religiously in high school.

Are you kidding ??? What the **** are you talking about man ? You are a biggest looser i ever seen in my life ! You was doing PIPI in your pampers when i was beating players much more stronger then you! You are not proffesional, because proffesionals knew how to lose and congratulate opponents, you are like a girl crying after i beat you! Be brave, be honest to yourself and stop this trush talkings!!! Everybody know that i am very good blitz player, i can win anyone in the world in single game! And "w"esley "s"o is nobody for me, just a player who are crying every single time when loosing, ( remember what you say about Firouzja ) !!! Stop playing with my name, i deserve to have a good name during whole my chess carrier, I am Officially inviting you to OTB blitz match with the Prize fund! Both of us will invest 5000$ and winner takes it all! I suggest all other people who's intrested in this situation, just take a look at my results in 2016 and 2017 Blitz World championships, and that should be enough... No need to listen for every crying babe, Tigran Petrosyan is always play Fair ! And if someone will continue Officially talk about me like that, we will meet in Court! God bless with true! True will never die ! Liers will kicked off...

If you think about it, it makes sense that Moriarty played white. He was one step ahead of Sherlock the entire time, much like how white always plays first, until Sherlock eventually got ahead of and bested him.
