The American Chestnut tree is being restored! Thanks to the tireless work of Dr. Fred Hebard and the American Chestnut Foundation, there are now beautiful, tall "foundational Chestnut trees" being introduced to the forest that have the blight resistance of the scrawny Chinese chestnut!

I've never seen an American Chestnut except as furniture. My dad said the blight was carried from tree to tree by a species of insect. The insects only did minor damage, but the fungus they carried were fatal to the chestnut trees. Many years later another fatal fungus was carried by boring insects to Elm trees and now it's hard to find those. Next to disappear: Mountain Ash

I just got a couple grocery bags full of Chinese American chestnuts 🌰 from a old tree in Tennessee. I’m gonna try to grow some more. I got a couple cuttings. I love them the Nut is very sweet and big. The husk needles are very sharp. Ouch thanks for helping bring back these giants. This tree I got mine from is over 80 years old.

Alicia The tree is not on my Land , Sorry . On Sept 16 2019 I drove 54 miles down to take photos of the Tree and the fall Colors starting to turn . I found a Baby Castanea dentata about a foot and a Half high , a New tree . I have a size 13 foot and it is 16 of my feet from the 96 footer . This Points to another tree in the area That makes a few of the Burrs Fertile . Most of the Burrs fall to the ground Unopened with the smaller nuts inside . These unopened Burrs are half the size of a Burr that was fertilized . I am going to say without knowing for sure that the seeds in the un opened burrs are not viable. The trees are in an area that is Heavy Woods . The 96 footer is on State park land , Genesee Valley Green Way State Park . The Baby Tree that is 16 size 13 feet away is On Letchworth State Park Property . Look at the 4th video that I made for the best view of the Tree and where it is located . The Cabins and Pavilions in the Park are made from Chestnut Salvage Logs During the 1930s by the C.C.C . I wish I could help ? These Chestnut trees have caused me some sleep less Nights ? I will keep looking a Half mile North of there for Runts That were found 10 years ago . I hope you find Viable seeds to grow because we are just a few years away from a New Tree being approved . Then things will really happen ?

There are at least two major challenges/ issues to restoring the american chestnut in the eastern forests of the USA. The obvious one is breeding a tree that will fulfill its roll in the forest. The second challenge is dealing with pollen from the numerous chinese chestnuts, including the dunstan hybrid that will form hybrids with american chestnut trees. There are apparently some provinces in Canada that do not allow chinese chestnuts. In NW Florida I am growing a few dunstans and have planted from seed some chinese chestnuts and also some chinquapin-chinese hybrids for nut production. There is nothing in the way of american chestnuts around here, but perhaps there might have been in the past.

I'm of the opinion now after watching many of these American Chestnut Tree restoration. City Planners and Regional Governments should require, American Chestnut trees should be planted first. Reforestation along the North American East Coast Carolinian Range should require reforestation using American Chestnuts be first planted. Farmers with wood lots should be compensated maybe with reduced land tax if they plant American Chestnut trees in wood lots.

My family had a few hundred acres in southern Ohio when I was a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's. There were many old huge chestnut trees on the forest floor that my dad would cut into lumber for furniture making. It was always so discouraging to see the sprouts come up only to die within a couple years from the blight. I can only imagine how many species of animals that once relied on the trees to survive have long since moved on or gone extinct like the passenger pigeon.

It depends what you want to plant. Dunstan chestnuts (Chinese/American) are easy to find and start from seed. If you want trees the he is working on, it is going to cost you a lot and technically you will never own your own tree or the nuts they produce. I went with Dunstan from chestnutridgeofpikecounty.com/ I cold stratified them last fall and some are 2 ft tall now. NE Indiana

In the UK it has been announced that the Fungal Blight on sweet Chestnuts is erupting in Devon and other places.. We don't have many Sweet Chestnut trees here but I guess they are on their way out. Britain's Government agency DEFRA does not have any plans to hybridise it or to do genetic research. All the government is doing is standing by and announcing where it is spreading to. I ventured into getting some fungal resistant DUNSTAN hybrid sent over from America but there are Laws to stop seed importation from America. To do it within the British law would cost a fortune involving paying Scientists both sides to ensure its free from any other invasive diseases and a mass of paperwork. Our Elms are gone and the Ash dieback is just about to wipe the Ash tree out . In the UK we just do nothing.

Before the blight, a mature American chestnut tree would be about 100 feet high with a trunk three to five feet in diameter, and sometimes much more. Chestnut trees grow quickly, like popular trees, but before the blight had a much longer lifespan, up to 1000 years. In the open, a chestnut tree would be broader than it was tall. A few specimens of actual mature American chestnuts exist in the far west, but none in their native range. The blight typically does not kill a very young tree, but after about 20 years does kill the American chestnut. GMO modification and cross breeding have so far not been successful in producing a truly blight resistant tree. (Claims to the contrary for cross breeding are actually trees that are mostly Chinese chestnut in characteristics, small orchard-size trees, not the huge canopy tree that is the trait and glory of the American chestnut.)
