because -- when I first heard the song, I did not know if he was black or white or something else. I just knew it was a great voice and a great song. "Race," because we are either mongoloid, negroid, or Caucasoid, as race goes, but regardless of our race or background, this song is pleasant to the ears and warm to the heart. that is, the song is universal. Hell, I even heard it one time when I was in Spain on an English-music radio station.

They called them “the kings of sad songs!” This song played 1000 times a day on every radio station. A monster of a hit. Nobody could end a song like the chi lites and I always hated that radio rarely played it to the end. There’s not a sound, however small,in this song ,that is not burned into my memory. I studied Chi lites records ferociously. My favorite group of all time.

Their haunting choreography and stage presence furthers the seething pain. How can the pain of loss invalidate a human being who admits its his fault? Look at the group. The vocals and the choreography are a pair, a couple on the stage. What an ethnomusicological rendition palatable in any culture? The wailing harmonica provides the base of this melancholy triangle of voice, dance, in a way that sears the anguish with the litany of a rhetorically delivered interrogation: "What am I gonna do?" "Have you ever seen such a helpless man?". "Why do I love you so" Take note of the live dissolve and camara angles cooperating with this performance. What a classic. As a kid back in the 70’s I had an older cousin who had the Chi-Lites pictures hanging on her wall with the Afros and she was playing this record on her record player. That was the first time that I heard this song, and I’ve loved their music ever since. The harmonica really makes this song so hauntingly beautiful. The 60’s-80’s music era is the best nothing else comes close. 🕺🏾🎼🎼
