In this documentary film, Cheech Marin reveals his passion for collecting Chicano art and shares his life's mission to elevate public consciousness of it throughout the nation and the world. It features interviews with many of today's top Chicano/a artists, including Chaz Bojorquez, David Botello, Melesio Casas, Gaspar Enriquez, Margaret Garcia, Rupert Garcia, Carmen Lomas Garza, Raul Guerrero, Roberto Gutierrez, Wayne Alaniz Healy, Adan Hernandez, Ester Hernandez, Leo Limon, Jose Lozano, Gilbert "Magu" Lujan, Cesar Martinez, Frank Romero, Alex Rubio, Marta Sanchez, Eloy Torrez, Jesse Trevino, John Valadez, Patssi Valdez, Vincent Valdez, and George Yepes. It also features discussions of work by Carlos Almaraz, Richard S. Duardo, and Artemio Rodriguez. Interviews also include those by Raul Pacheco of Ozomatli, David Hidalgo and Cesar Rojas of Los Lobos, museum professionals, gallery owners, art dealers, and project team members and supporters.
Produced to accompany "The Chicano Collection," an archival print project by Richard S. Duardo of Modern Multiples in partnership with Cheech Marin and Melissa Richardson Banks (as well as a subsequent traveling exhibition produced and managed by Melissa Richardson Banks), the film describes the personal journeys and viewpoints of the 26 featured artists and their struggle for acceptance by American art museums. Overall, this collection of stories demonstrates how Chicano art evolved from a political movement begun in the late 1960s and emerged as a legitimate art school after breaking down the walls in the fine art world to get the work seen and respected. Directed and written by Tamara Hernandez. Executive Producers: Cheech Marin, Richard S. Duardo, and Melissa Richardson Banks. Produced by Tamara Hernandez, Melissa Richardson Banks, and Heather Flores. Music by Timoteo Aaron. Cinematography by Richard Briglia, Kristoffer Carrillo, and Tarina Reed. Editor: Garth Grinde. Motion Graphics Designer & Editor: Dan Prussmann. Sound Design: Sunny Basham. Released on November 8, 2005. Running time: 53:05 minutes. Details on IMDB at www.imdb.com/title/tt1846767/

Chicano has its roots from the Nahuatl language. Mexicanos, Chicanos, Pochos were all the same people separated by European influences. We all originated from Aztlan.....some stood in the Southwest and some migrated to Tenochtitlan.
@anahuactiahui667
@anahuactiahui667 8 жыл бұрын
It's so sad....you're so colonized!!! - First of all the name Mexican was given to our great ancestor Tenoch in a dream by Huitzilopotchli around the year 1300ad. The Europeans came to "Tenochtitlan" in 1521. Do the math. We really should be called Mexicas not Aztecs. -Our civilizations here in Anahuac (America) existed way before the bible and the Torah. We go as far back as the ancient Egyptians. Don't let the Europeans poison your mind anymore!!! We have a beautiful culture and spirituality left by our great ancestors!!!

+Raphael Issachar N.Kingdom First of all everything that has happened to us Mexicans has been prophesised by our great ancestor Cuahtemoc in his last speech to us. He said that we were going to be conquered for 500 years but in the year 2012 we were slowly going to start regaining our ancient knowledge back again for the sake of humanity. So to follow foreign religions is not for us period!!! Our true motherland is Mexico not Jerusalem!!!

+Anahuac Tiahui Another major difference from the Abrahamic religions and us true Mexicans is that religion itself is totally foreign and ridiculous to us. Our ancestors taught us that spirituality should come from within yourself and yourself only. No one knows you better than your own self. Our great ancestors taught us that life is just a dream and the best way to live your life is through love yourself to the fullest and that love will reciprocate itself. Live your life as if you only have one week to live on earth!!! Pure love!!!

I was born and raised in Chicago from Mexican immigrant parents. I love the Chicano culture out west, but I never call myself a Chicano. While Chicago is segregated, its less so than states in the south west and west. Mexicans in Chicago have a lot of influence from the black community as well as other non Mexican Latinx communities. I didn't grow up with lowrider culture, Chicano fashion, Calo slang, or cholo culture in general. I didn't listen to oldies, rock n roll, I never even knew there was Chicano rappers. I am proud to be mexican, american, latino, I appreciate the Chicano movement and how I benefit from it but if I call myself a Chicano I feel like I'm a fraud. This is not a generalization of Mexican Americans from Chicago, this is from my personal experience. I feel that coming up in this city has affected my connection to Chicanoism. If any other Mexican Americans feel the same you are not alone. Much respect and all love.

I’m a Mexican American and to me being Chicano just means being born in the United States. I never realized that “Chicano” is associated with a intellectual, cultural movement “chicanismo” which as a young person it feels distant. My parents listened to Mexican music not oldies, their style is norteno not cholo or pachuco, their super catholic not 60s activist type. So in a way although I do live in California and accept the Chicano label on a basic level “Chicanismo” and everything Cheech and others express here feels kinda distant to me as first generation Mexican American.

Mexican Americans from the 40s 50s 60s are really Americanized and feel alienated from their Mexican side and other Americans. And they seek to express and validate themselves in both “ni de Aqui ni de alla”. New generations of Mexican Americans are more well rooted in their Mexican culture, they speak Spanish, they go to Mexico for the holidays, they grow up with a lot of Mexicans everywhere. For them it’s “de aqui y de alla”

The chicano experience is like the African-American experience!!! Is like any central American immigrants!!! Or the Irish, or the German, the one thing we all havein common is the immigrants experience!!!

Miss Melissa Banks, I did not find any mention of "panos" or handkerchiefs. I have not seen any in years through any of my incarcerated friends or any art pieces here on youtube. It is in my opinion a real dying art. I am the only person I know that still makes handkerchiefs. If any one out there has any reference or images available, contact me here as a reply. I am very curios to see if there is anyone still practicing this art form..

I don't accept the Chicano label I'm Mexican American I keep the Spanish alive and Mexican culture and the American culture i don't follow but I do give thanks for the opportunity in the diverse melting pot and appreciate the freedom. Plus I don't have a big facination about mixing to get treated better in the USA and I don't erase my Spanish like many do I also speak English and I balance both languages

I wish I would have left the country instead of going to the Vietnam war. At age 18 I wish I were smart enough to recognize that the war was wrong and I don't hold it against those who at a young age did realize it.

"Chicano" paintings are not always great works of art, but they have a soul infused into them which is almost totally lacking in modern painting by US artists.
