Lyrics:
I said I wanna touch the earth
I wanna break it in my hands
I wanna grow something wild and unruly
I wanna sleep on the hard ground
In the comfort of your arms
On a pillow of bluebonnets
In a blanket made of stars
Oh it sounds good to me I said
Cowboy take me away
Fly this girl as high as you can
Into the wild blue
Set me free oh I pray
Closer to heaven above and
Closer to you closer to you

When I was a little boy growing up in Gillette Wyoming, this song came on the radio in our garage late one night when me and my mom were painting, i grabbed my mom and slow danced with her to this song and it brought her to tears. One of my best childhood memories ♥ Sadly she is no longer with us, she passed unexpectedly in 2021 and this was the song I played for her.

My life partner of 20 years died March 2019 and Deborah was my cowgirl. She was from TN but had moved to NYC was a classically trained pianist and got her Masters from Manhattan school of music. We both loved nature and yet we were stuck in NYC. We went on many camping trips to the adirondacks, Maine, etc, and dreamed of escaping from NYC. Well I have no relocated to Haynesville ME, pop 121. Right on the river. Deb would have loved it. Anyway this was our song. She was my cowgirl and always will be. And now when the line says "Fly this girl as high as you can into the wild blue Set me free, oh, I pray Closer to heaven…Closer to you" I feel as if she is still with me. I'm an old fashioned romantic. There will never be another I married her for life, my life. For 20 years I was blessed. I did not deserve her, she deserved better than me. I was blessed because she chose me to spend her life with. My greatest regret is that I sometimes put work first as I always thought we would have many tomorrows together. If you have someone you love let them know they are the most important thing in your life right now, because tomorrow may never come.

@@FLP90 Well, we were at the same summer camp for a week. They had dances every night. I asked her to dance every chance I could get. We left camp and I never saw her again unfortunately. Oh we talked on the phone a bit and sent emails, but this was about 20 years ago, before the days when teenagers had cell phones - and parents had to pay long distance charges instead. And she lived several hours drive away. It was too hard to keep it going. But you never forget your first kiss.

Its so weird to say this cause im old now but this song reminds me of my girlfriend from summer after high school to like sophomore year of college. Katie. We used to listen to this shit and it just hit home back then. Long live the good old days. You move on in life but you still cherish the memories and the ones that knew you way back when. Ill never forget driving with that brunette brown eyed girl and singing this shit.

Emily and Martie are amazingly talented on their instruments. And Natalie's voice is nearly unbelievably good - I have listened closely to a massive amount of music over the past 40 years and she's one of my favorite vocalists (and I'm only a modest fan of country). I think I could listen to her sing every day for the rest of my life. Such a rich tone and lyrical approach - it must be awesome to be able to sing like that.
