I'm guessing you missed where he said, she probably had a boyfriend but didn't care, he just wanted someone to write letters too. Extremely common and a true lifeline for many soldiers, especially before things the internet and international calls without operators.

Dropped the Dixie because of the woke presence and pressures around the same time that confederate civil war hero’s statues were removed.

It wasn't due to any pressure put on them, its what they wanted to do. It's who they are. They're massive advocates for equality.

They kind of faded out because their lead singer got into with Toby Keith & lost. Natalie Maines (the singer) his had an issue with Toby's 9/11 song courtesy of the red white & blue, she called the song ignorant & that pissed a lot of people off, especially military veterans. People stoppe listening to their music & radio stations stopped playing them.

My favorite version of this is by Aaron Lewis. And it actually is not him singing it, but it is in his album. I’ve heard it is his daughter singing it, but I’m not sure.

Don't cry for the girl, cry for the young man cut down in his prime. Yes, he was among the Vietnam dead, but this could be any soldier in any war. This live version beats the original recording, the military drum at the end wasn't in the original and is really sobering.

Name was changed due to the back lash of the name Dixie. As it is southern in heritage

The Chicks are badass truth tellers. They were the first to experience "cancel culture". They received death threats for a comment the lead singer, Natalie, said during a concert in Europe. She said they were against the war in Iraq and that they were ashamed the president came from Texas (paraphrasing) Country music turned their backs on them. Had CD burning events. They got death threats and the FBI had to get involved. They have an amazing documentary that goes thru everything they went thru. Other country artists joined in the hate. It was MASSIVE at the time. Nowadays, it wouldn't even make a blip. The orange guy said MUCH worse on the same topic. But...that doesn't seem to matter to his supporters. But they still hate The Chicks. They wrote an answering album that won every Grammy it was nominated for. Along with their answering song called " Not Ready to Make Nice. Its very epic. I support The Chicks. *they dropped the "Dixie" due to its negative connotations of the confederate
