I put together a small chloralkali cell to demonstrate the working principle of the industrial process for generating sodium hydroxide and chlorine.
After seeing a few sources online which seemed to oversimplify this chloralkali process, I was prompted to make my own video on the topic, simply because I think the process is very interesting.
I do already have a video on the topic, • Making Sodium Hydroxide (in which I convert a sample of sodium carbonate into sodium hydroxide), but I thought it deserved a do-over with a better explanation of how it works.
Cody'slab has also made a couple of excellent videos on the topic, which specifically describe the mercury cell design (which I only briefly mentioned):
• Making Sodium Hydroxid...
• The Chlorine Machine
Also, if you're interested, I also have a video about generating sodium chlorate from regular sodium chloride, which is a very similar process to the one described in this video:
• Making a Chlorate Cell
