A memorable scene from the film version of Chaim Potok's 'The Chosen.' Danny Saunders and Reuven Malter, whom once hated each other, find close friendship after settling their differences. A scene that displays a secret of Danny's.

Older movies are the best movies. Psychology is an interesting subject too.

A rare and forgotten film adaptation of Jewish-American literary giant Chaim Potok's classic and best-selling 1967 novel, "The Chosen" is an extremely timely and newly relevant watch in the wake of the Hamas terrorist attacks of October 2023. It was selected as the single greatest film ever made about Jewish life in the book "The 50 Greatest Jewish Films: A Critic's Ranking Of The Very Best" by Kathryn Bernheimer. It should be noted that at the time of its original release in the spring of 1982, it was Barry Miller's performance as Reuven Malter that received the overwhelming majority of critical acclaim, overshadowing Robbie Benson and even Oscar winners Maximilian Schell and Rod Steiger. He had made a tremendous impact on audiences and critics in the late 1970's and early 1980's in "Saturday Night Fever" and most especially in Sir Alan Parker's "Fame" and was particularly championed by renowned critic Gene Siskel at that time as the most brilliant young actor of his generation. Alas, despite a Tony Award-winning Broadway stage debut and continually acclaimed film performances under several prestigious and legendary directors, major Hollywood "name" stardom was not to be. As of 2024, it might be a fortuitous time to re-release "The Chosen" back into specialized "arthouse" movie theatres. Anti-Semitism, that most ancient and undying of hatreds, has found an explosive and fearsome new life in the wake of current events. There is a sequence in the film that necessitates a historical re-introduction into the willful and toxic cultural amnesia of our present moment: documentary newsreel footage of the Allied liberation of the Nazi concentration camps at the end of World War 2. ("Nazi Murder Mills"). What Jonathan Glazer's' "The Zone Of Interest" artfully alludes to is here shown in all of it's explicit reality, to give the eternal lie to the unending and continuous evils of Holocaust denial. The producers of "The Chosen" were Ely and Edie Landau, responsible for historically groundbreaking and controversially Jewish-themed films such as as Sidney Lumet's "The Pawnbroker" (1965) and the adaptation of actor Robert Shaw's play "The Man In The Glass Booth" (1975) directed by Arthur Hiller.

The Promise was an incredible follow up to The Chosen. I would also highly recommend "Davita's Harp", and my personal favorites --- "My Name Is Asher Lev" and the phenomenal sequel, "The Gift Of Asher Lev"...Chaim Potok...he cast such a long shadow not only in Jewish literature (and literature in general) but the Jewish world. In Conservative Judaism in which I was raised and still practice, Potok was a giant.

@r3ggy1005 To each his own opinion, of course. I thought it was a great movie and sparked my interest in Hasidic Judaism. I have learned a lot since then!
