Child's Play creator Don Mancini defends his first film behind the camera, the Hollywood satire Seed of Chucky, and pitches a Chucky movie set in World War II.
Not everyone likes the fifth film in the Child's Play series, Seed of Chucky, but Don Mancini does. He's in the CraveOnline studio telling Bibbs how his killer doll franchise transformed into a broad satire dealing with issues of addiction, gender identity, and insider Hollywood gags. Don Mancini also explains why Brad Dourif doesn't appear as himself in Seed of Chucky, how he pitched a supporting role to Quentin Tarantino, and his idea for a Chucky movie set in World War II.
With the 25th anniversary of Child's Play upon us, and the release of the sixth film of the franchise in a big Chucky: The Complete Collection Blu-ray box set, we thought it was the perfect time to sit Don Mancini down for a series of exclusive, extended interviews about each film in the franchise, and answer all our biggest questions about Chucky. We're calling it The Chucky Files.

This movie was what made me interested at the series, Chucky making fun of Glen/Glenda the first time he sees them made me laugh so hard. Absolutely love this movie, it also made me interested in Glen or Glenda and Ed Wood

I love this movie. Jennifer Tilly/Tiffany is beautiful as always & has the voice of an angel. Glen is adorable(in my opinion). & Chucky is awesome as always

This movie is cool and underrated because is full of different generes in it, like a mashup in music, is a mashup featuring different movies and generes: horror, comedy, camp, trash movies, exploitation, etc. You can find manyreferences to other movies in this chapter like Devil Doll, Dressed to Kill, Look Who's Talking, Halloween, Ordinary People, New Nightmare, Kramer vs Kramer, Pyscho, Shining, Suspiria and many more!

The only reason why people don't like seed (and I guess this includes Bride too, since that one is relatively similar) is because they can't accept the film as a comedy. A good majority of people who claim to only be a fan of CP 1-3 are the same ones who seem to have an interest in the franchise solely for the horror aspect of it-- and as fine as that is, I still don't think they should complain when they know that Mancini's intentions was not horror alone. It's not a 'bad movie', it just isn't your taste.

librarysuicides i agree with you 101%! When i went into Seed i went into it with the right mindset. Even though i knew it wasn't going to be my absolute number 1 favourite of the series but it is definitely 10 times better than Childs play 3 & 20 times better than Curse of Chucky. I had the right mindset going into it because the same night i watched Bride of Chucky that same night & i also went into that one knowing that it would not be the same movie as the first 2 were(i say first 2 because Childs play 3 was worse than this as well)i knew that there was going to be more comedy than horror. & so after watching that i knew what to expect from Seed. I knew that there would be more comedy in this one as well. & if your going into this movie thinking it will be more horror then you've got another thing coming to you. Because if you go into this thinking it'll be more horror than comedy then you will be totally gobsmacked! So yeah if you are thinking about watching Seed of Chucky you are going to have more comedy than horror. & if you don't want to go into it thinking it will be more comedy than horror then please do me a favour & don't watch it. It has enough haters already & doesn't need more!

The difference is bride is comedy but dark comedy its a horror comedy you still care about the characters seed makes the mistake of making everything a joke chucky himself is a joke an the comedy is light hearted unlike bride its like naked gun comedy in this its a parody film it even parodies the very franchise its made from

I agree with BoomStick Critique. The difference here is that Bride of Chucky still had elements of horror. It had a dark comedy atmosphere to it, and it was clever in its comedy. Seed of Chucky went full-on, light-hearted comedy to the point where it feels like a parody of itself and other films as well. It's stupid. And it also made Chucky a big joke. He didn't feel like a serious threat by this point. As was said in the video, he's more "cute" in this movie than he is creepy and evil. He is the least scary in this film.

Probably my favorite of the series. Started out as my least favorite. It's a beautiful film. So much character. Everyone is trying to find acceptance and to be loved while attempting to overcome their shortcomings.

Me too. As a kid, I saw it (being semi-scared) and never re-watched. Later, I saw a few times more. NOW, that I know its history, I REALLY like it. Seed of Chucky isn't bad, and I admire Jennifer Tilly even more. It's a fun, 'cult classic', fun film. :D

i personally love Seed of Chucky. & i think that the reason why alot of other people don't like it very much is because they're not going into it with the right mindset. So if you're planning on watching Seed of Chucky & people are telling you not to watch it but you may have seen other people who like it & you aren't sure who to believe then you need to listen to what i am about to say: so in order to enjoy Seed of Chucky you need to go into it with the right mindset. If you think that it's gonna be more horror than comedy then you've got something else coming to you because if you are about to sit down & watch it thinking it will be more horror than comedy you will get totally gobsmacked in the face. I did not get gobsmacked in the face when i watched it for the first time. I did not get gobsmacked the first time i watched it because i sat down & watched it knowing that there was going to be more comedy than horror. So if you are about to watch Seed of Chucky then please watch it with the right mindset. & if you don't want to go into it with that mind set then please do me a favour & don't watch it at all. This movie has enough haters already. It does not need more!

Out of all movies to have LGBT representation (Glen/Glenda clearly being genderfluid or trans), it was this disasterpiece. Well played. Also, my praises to Tilly. She seems like such a sweet and genuinely funny person, it's good she can have a laugh at her own expense and Tiffany was the thing I liked the best out of Bride and Seed.

Seed of Chucky is no where a horrible movie, it is my least favourite Chucky film in the franchise so far, but that’s due to I was expecting the humour to be similar to Bride of Chucky, so I was taken back when I saw it the first few times, but as the years go by, I enjoy the movie more and more. The deaths were pretty darn cool in this film. Hope to see Glen/Glenda in the future :)

In my opinion seed of chucky is my least favorite I did not like it that much but of course, I have been a chucky fan since I was seven and I’m trying to figure out what would make it enjoyable, I suggest a demonic creepy remake of seed of chucky in the future where there is no comedy and Glen is a demonic baby. I have an interesting history with _Seed of Chucky._ I was a teenager when it came out, and I absolutely loved it the first time I saw it. Mostly due to the great entertainment value it had. But after a while, I went through a period where I absolutely hated it. I just sort-of saw it as too self-indulgent and off-the-rails. But more recently, I've sorta rebounded back to me loving it once again, because I'm now old enough to see what Don Mancini was trying to do with the material. I don't think it's perfect, but it's a really ambitious little film, and I think it adds a lot to the overall franchise.

I still enjoy Seed of Chucky. It's among the least favourite of the franchise but then again I enjoy every installment of it so far. So saying among the least favourite is nothing negative just personal ranking. Oh it's not a real Child's Play movie I know. Maybe that's why it isn't named Child's Play? I was among those kids who thought they were tough shit for watching Guinea Pig, Faces of Death and whatnot. There's stuff like that in every generation. Nowadays it's the torture porn like Saw. So people feel hardcore for watching those ultra violent movies but a pump full of toy semen does it for them? For me the reaction to Seed shows a somewhat prude audience that can't accept that very sexual humor of this movie. It reminds me of a scene of one of them "Gory and then some" Anime movies. There was a picture of a woman getting her head ripped off by another naked woman while also being used as a human shield as bullets splash into her. You see every gory detail of that, but the boobs were censored by a black bar. I accepted Seed for what it was and didn't bash it for not being something it most definitely didn't even try to be in the first place and enjoyed the ride. Thanks for making fun entertaining movies all my live Don. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to Chucky 8!

But i don't agree with you when you said that it's still the worst because i personally think that Childs play 3 & Curse of Chucky are worse than Seed of Chucky. What are the odds that a good guy doll that was smashed to pieces and buried gets found several years later and somebody somehow knows the incantation to transfer the their soul into it and goes off to fight Chucky? Basically, it doesn't make sense and sounds like a story a child would come up with, if the user isn't in fact a child.

And another thing...Don I love you cause you invented Chucky for us but the thing you say bout Bride is a parodie of a romance and Seed of blabla...dude that isn't something you have to do! For me it's Child's Play 1,2. Bride Of Chucky and Curse. I didn't really like Child's Play 3 :/

Well bride works because it was fresh its a horror comedy they never treat the kills an victims as a joke an its funny .The problem with seed is it went for nothing but comedy seed made the mistake alot of late sequels do they go for everything is a joke chucky is a joke tiffany is a joke the kills are a joke the victims are a joke its all a joke theres no substance an if we arent supposed to care about anything whats the point

So the first three were fine, and curse and cult are cool. Bride and Seed were just plain horrible to me. But WHat I wonder is, those 2 are canon. But how do they go from, Chucky is this movie star that stars in movies with all kinds of people on set knowing he's alive, back to "He's just a doll" and no one believing he's alive?

I don't think you should drink them anymore Chucky films Don Mancini is just they're not as good yeah I think you're ok with being a producer but not a director but I think we should have a new director for the TV series

That movie is a disgrace to it's own franchise! We want Chucky to be scary..not a stand up comedian :s there is a reason why we fans love Chucky...it's BECAUSE he is scary...the first 3 movies did that very well...since Bride it went downhill...Curse was a quick turn to the horror again wich I liked soooo much and yet again with Cult they all destroy that again. Wtf :s seed of chucky is like a scary movie film...a parodie of good horrormovies...nothing more. I realy hope they throw away the multiple Chucky doll thing from curse cause this makes Chucky going downhill as our beloved unique slasher doll

Seed is a strange animal. I liked Bride so by all accounts I should've like Seed too but I really just found it to be uninspired and trite. What worked in Bride seems like more of the same in Seed yet it's not as good in this outing. The story stayed in one place and didn't move. It seems like Jennifer Tilly/Tiffany and Glenn/Glenda are the stars while Chucky takes a backseat and is more of a supporting character. I found the acting to be really bad in this one and not in a good way.
