This excerpt is from “A Call From the Holy Mountain” by Elder Ephraim, written in 1974 (based on the text) and published in English in 1991. Elder Ephraim covers many aspects of the life of the Church, speaking to both monks and laymen. These words may be difficult to hear; they are written by the greatest missionary to America of our times. Let us take heed to stand firm on the teachings of our holy Elder Ephraim lest we fall away from the narrow path.

“Christ's Church is Catholic in the sense that it possesses the entire fullness of the truth and the grace to illuminate and redeem the world; it is, moreover, Catholic in the sense that it tends not to conquer but to sanctify the world. The Head of the Church is Christ and we are members of it connected by the common faith in conjunction with love.”
“The history of the Church is the story of its struggle to sanctify its faithful.”
“…mere knowledge of things divine cannot save us; it is the taste, indeed, the experience of a life in Christ that will do so. And this is so because Christian truth is not an intellectual affair but a living experience of the dogmatic and moral doctrines of the faith and a mysterious and mystic communication between the faithful and its Founder.”
“In cases of deliberate or undeliberate deviation from tradition, judgement has always been, is and shall be pronounced by the sound public opinion of the Church which by right intervenes and restores peace in the Church; peace not truth, for the grace and the truth never abandon the Divine Body of the Church. It abandons those who in wavering ‘concerning faith have made shipwreck, and betray the birthright of the common heritage of those ‘taxed’ in the heavens.”
“Satan did his best to snatch away countless men from the bosom of the Church and to present it before the world as being divided and weak. Now he is again doing his best to unite it into a peculiar union of his own inspiration, using as leaven the formula of ‘love.’ Such has been the plethoric use and abuse of this ‘love’ by so many that others neither wish to hear nor talk about love.”
“The rule is that where much is being said about a virtue, that virtue is not to be found there. The voice raised in favor of that virtue is the cry of its absence. This is the case with the ‘love’ of all those who believe that they should contribute towards the realization of the Lord's wish ‘that they all may be one.’ Let us be more specific. They say that we Orthodox should unite with the Roman Catholics and then with the Protestants and with all the known and unknown heresies conceived by the Devil in the name of Christianity. After all Christians without exception unite, they should then unite with the Mohammedans, the Jews, and in extension with the Buddhists, Brahmins, Shintoists and with all the religions of the universe in general. This pan-heretical alchemy is being inspired through the so-called World Council of Churches. We think that the term is not true to the fact, for it does not concern a World Council of Churches but a World Council of Will Worship.”
“The strong position taken up by Father George Florovsky that ‘Orthodoxy's mission is to be a martyr and ‘bear witness unto the truth'’ may be fulfilled only with an Orthodox Ecumenism described by Father Spyridon Bilialis in his book, Orthodoxy and Papism. ‘We believe that it is high time that the Orthodox Church came forth united before the world and promoted its own Orthodox Ecumenism by setting up purely orthodox ecumenical rostrums where from in loud voices it would proclaim 'urbi et orbi' that Orthodoxy alone is today the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church of Christ.’”
“We feel no animosity against any men because of their heresy or their faithlessness, but we shall never come to love faithlessness or heresy for the sake of men, because if we do we shall be alienated from God.”
“Christianity is the soul, the life and the hope of the world.”
“There have always been laymen with hearts of monks; and there have always been monks with hearts of laymen. It is not the place but the means that makes the man. Repentance, my brethren and Fathers in Christ, as Saint John of Sinai says, is a renewal of Baptism; it is the greatest source of redemption following Baptism Let us remember the steadfast knock of repentance on the gates of the Kingdom. ‘Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on me.’”

As a traditionalist priest, a priest of the genuine orthodox church, I agree with nearly everything the Elder said here. However, with great respect, I am sorry to say that he did not seem to be consistent with his words. And I am shocked, once again, to find that critics of genuine Orthodoxy are able to listen to this kind of teaching without converting

@@acekoala457 ,demons do not have a soul according to scripture, they are not redeemable . 1 St Corinthians 15:1-4” BELIEVE “, Romans 3:25” FAITH in his Blood”, Romans 10:8-10 BELIEVE in thine heart, Romans 2:16” we in the church age will be judged if we have BELIEVED our apostles Gospel of 1 st Corinthians Chapter 15 verse 1-4.Believe/ Trust/ Faith= all the same thing.James 2:19” even the demons believe”, James 1:1 “ written to the twelve tribes scattered abroad,( Israel), not written to the church scattered abroad, so stands to reason this is not speaking about salva in the church age.

Fr. Is correct in saying the Orthodox should stand together against heterodoxy and eccumanism. The idea of one world church with Islam is evil.

The Nicene Creed of the First Council of Constantinople affirms the characteristics of unity, sanctity, catholicity, and apostolicity. Orthodoxy does not feature as one of the four marks of the Church. There is one Catholic Church, and one orthodox faith. “The thrice blessed and all-glorious Peter the apostle, who is the rock and foundation of the Catholic Church, and the foundation of the orthodox faith.” (Council of Chalcedon, Session III, 451).

Bla bla. Nicene Creed is a construction for solidifying power. True Christianity is far beyond such infantile measures.

The word-concept fallacy is strong here. The Orthodox Church is the only Church that is truly catholic. For those interested in the Orthodox-Roman Catholicism debate, watch this short and powerful documentary: Who Started the Great Schism? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qJ1jnNuGqqnbeKc.html

@@OrthodoxWisdom Of the recognized ecumenical councils, can you supply a supporting citation from one of those councils that affirm the entity commonly known as the Orthodox Church? As for the image of Elder Ephraim featured in the video, is it not somewhat presumptuous that the venerable elder has been depicted with a nimbus? Veneration of the elder by the people may well lead to glorification by the Church.

If I give you a citation will that convince you of anything? The name itself is not the most critical thing. Faithfulness to the Apostolic deposit and the unity of the Church is what matters. I don't know the details of the councils as well as I would like. Craig Truglia on Orthodox Christian Theology would know since he has read all the minutes of the first seven Ecumenical Councils. Please ask him if you would like. Regarding the nimbus, or halo, it is a pious sign for holy men and women to be depicted with a halo before their formal canonization. It's not uncommon. We have saints who venerated such icons before the saint in that icon was canonized, such as St. John Maximovitch venerating then Fr. Herman, later St. Herman, of Alaska. We have myrrh-streaming icons like this, too. We don't want to assume to speak for the Church but we can express our love and veneration for a saint in this way. Our saints are first venerated by the people and without the veneration of the people the hierarchs would be very hesitant to canonize anyone.

@@OrthodoxWisdom Thank you for taking the time to answer my enquiry. Your reply has assisted me in gaining a deeper understanding of the ways of the Eastern Church. Hopefully, someone will supply a citation from an ecumenical council regarding the entity known as the Orthodox Church. In closing, can I recommend the exquisite singing of some eastern monks (go to KZfaq, input the text: „Среде пустинската убост“.

I love Orthodoxy, but tradition has overwhelmed the Church, rather than the Word of God. Why venerate Saints, like Saint Mary the mother of Jesus? Christ is our only High Priest and Mediator between God and men. It seems that paganism has crept into the Church, with its rituals and commemorations-none of which our Lord Jesus commanded us to uphold. It’s not Church “membership” of works that saves your soul, but personal obedient faith in Jesus Christ. Not saying that there shouldn’t be a hierarchical patriarchy of the Church-there must be, but professing ‘Christians’ have abandoned the Holy Bible on their shelves…foolishly following after the commandments of man, not God. The pharisaical spirit of self-righteousness continues to plague institutionalized Christianity, where the blood of Jesus is blasphemously considered unsubstantial for the permanent remission of all sins. Oh Lord Jesus, our Holy Father, how far man has fallen from Your ways, have mercy on us all-for You are the God of Mercy. Amen.

St Paul says that the Church is the pillar and ground of truth, NOT the written text. Even the devil quoted scripture. This shows that the essence of scripture is not in the words alone, but rather in the words alongside their proper interpretations. Come and see a Divine Liturgy!
