I've seen the church play live at least 20 times in my life. As much as I miss Peter, Marty and Craig, I have to admit that Ash, Ian and Jeffrey are doing an amazing job

not bad for a covers band, lacks the spirit and drive of the 'originals'
@Blacktopcowboy Жыл бұрын
It’s not bad but the overall feel is very very different. The way the guitars and drums flow is just too stiff and laid back. The original bad had this magical push and pull.

@@Blacktopcowboy I have this rule about not seeing "legacy bands" live when they're past their prime. No matter how good they were and how much you loved them in your youth, 40 years later they are only pale versions of their former selves and they can only disappoint you. This week I broke that rule and went to see this band, and this exception only reinforced that rule. The band is clearly talented. The two front guitarists, Naylor and Haug, are serious professionals. The American guitarist/keyboardist and the drummer, both vastly younger than the other three, provided energy and power. But to me the appeal of the The Church was never Steven Kilbey, but rather the interplay between Koppes and Wilson-Piper, two very different guitarists who brought an electrifying dynamic to the group. That band was certainly greater than the sum of its parts. This band is centered on Kilbey, who besides being witty and really funny, can't really mask his vocal limitations and Naylor and Haug don't really compensate for that loss. The set list included deep cut gems like "Is This Where You Live?" that I didn't expect to hear and brought me joy. All in all I'm glad I went to see them, but for my $48, I couldn't help thinking of those fateful last words John Lydon snarled to the crowd in the very last Pistols show in 1978.

I've seen the church quite a few times. First time was in Frankfurt Germany back in 1990. This is one of my favorite songs. It seems like it's played slow with no original members except Steve Kilbey. Glad I didn't waste so much money on a concert ticket.

Unfortunately the Church was always Kilbey. Thats why there's no Peter, Marty or Richard here.
@Nithael_ Жыл бұрын
Not unfortunately…He is the catalyst but those other guys contributed so much too, Kilbey helped bring it out. We should not fail to see how great Ian, and Jeffrey Cain are. Those guys are true sorcerers. Cain is behind the Isidore project, those 2 records are as great as anything the Church ever did.
