RIP to the late, great Edward G. Robinson. This role was his "Swan Song", for all practical purposes. Never again in his career did he get such a role. He was the original choice for Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes, but the producer fired him to get (the lower-priced) Maurice Evans, and the cast were told to cover it up...

In Lancey 's stare you can see his mind is on the game about how and what it's going to take to beat The Kid it's like he's making a mental note that a bluff will not beat The Kid which almost everyone thinks he's doing (bluffing) as you hear their thoughts in this scene. Lancey is "The Man" Well played Eddie G.

I agree. Usually Hollywood poker movies has the protagonist betting everything on the last hand. In this one, he obviously had a setback but would recover. The game wasn't about money anyway. It was about reputation.

Lancy happens to give him a bad beat with a hand that has a 1 in 300 billion chance of happening then he trash talks him. As someone who enjoys poker it always drove me nuts lol

"Zoe the Cat" - true about the odds if there was no cheating. However, it's left to the viewer as to whether that was a "set up" hand (i.e. not a random dealing). Someone already had tried to help The Kid cheat and he didn't want it. Who is to say that after The Kid turned them down, that The Man didn't cheat? I say it was a cheat hand, no doubt about it - given the odds of it being real, plus the foreshadowing of the cheating possibility.

Look at the cast. Anybody at that table could carry a movie on their own . I love Rounders but this cast is superb

Especially, Edward G. Robinson nailed the role of a poker shark; 10x better than John Malkovich in rounders. McQueen and Damon played almost at the same level imo. But EGR just killed it here

+Flickchaser I just read that Spencer Tracy was originally cast as The Man but dropped out due to illness. If so, that was certainly a lucky break for the movie, IMHO. Tracy was a great, great actor but I see him as Father Flanagan, not a gambler. Robinson just fits perfectly in this role, I don't see how anyone could do it better

I couldn't agree more about Edward g ..he is one of those actors that has me riveted to the screen..he's short and fat and looks ike a toad...but I can't take my eyes off of him..that is star quality.

E.G.R. had tremendous range. In "The Sea Wolf" 1941, he played Wolf Larsen captain of the hell ship "Ghost" . Larsen, the main character, a combination brute and intellectual, was captured very well by Robinson as most everything he did was a memorable performance.

XNobody could out take McQueen with such smooth class, backed up by subtlety, like Edward G. Robinson. Acting at its peak. Brilliant.

I'd give you Joan & take Ann Margaret any time.

actually, the Devil showed up after, in the form of the kid, tempting Cinncinati to play again, right after he felt he was through with gambling........the way the camera focus on the kid, right into his face, defying and mocking at the same time.........Cinncinati has a serious gambling addiction and the devil knows how to exploit it.

The Kid did make a bad with that check raise at the end.

You need to see the entire movie. They aren't mad at The Kid for betting big on a full house, they are mad at him for not cheating, which they wanted him to do. The Kid found out they were giving him good cards from a fixed deck, and he told them to play it straight and had them change dealers. So they were mad at him that he "had to do it his way" (i.e. not cheat). Ironically, the ridiculous odds of the final hand show that someone almost certainly then cheated on behalf of The Man. When you understand the "cheating" angle, you understand why that "impossible" last hand wasn't so impossible.

It's ridiculous on so many levels... You cannot be forced to get more money beyond table stakes. 😂

Was a different era I'd say. I can kinda agree. Movies for the most part are so much different these days. Philip Seymour Hoffman was probably the best actor since paul newman I'd say.

Actually you've solved the riddle of the last hand. "Only a crooked dealer" is exactly what happened, even though the film does not say this explicitly. The odds of having that final hand were ridiculously long IF no one was cheating. But the possibility of dealer cheating was already raised in the movie, therefore it is the most likely explanation of that "impossible" final hand.

those odds are so astronomical for 5card stud with 2players that I think there's a subplot here that Ladyfingers stacked the deck for that final hand. There are a lot of elements in the movie that fit that scenario. Ladyfingers razzing Lancy early on as if to get on his nerves. And razzing him at the end as if she's almost offended at his raising with only 3 cards to the flush. Then there's the messages from Slade & Melba that honesty is for losers, to the point where its kind of a theme. After Lancy has seen what a sore loser Slade is & seen how Slade treats Shooter as if he owns him & seen Slade lay $2000 on the table when the kid is short cash early in the game it would make sense for Lancy to suspect a rigged game. Lancy's version of how to play it rigged would be more subtle. Have Ladyfingers feed The Kid some winning hands to get his confidence up & then take it all away in 1 hand. The entire history of professional gambling in USA, & New Orleans, is a flood of rigged & cheating games. So, as you say, the fact it is just a movie makes how huge the odds against it irrelevant as evidence of what "really" happened since nothing real happened; but it may be a data point in the plot meant to suggest what I'm guessing at here. In the cheating hand in The Sting the hands are believable so far as the odds go. So maybe the extreme hand in this closing scene is meant to suggest what I'm guessing at. Either way; it's a great movie with a lot of first rate performances & a great closing scene.
