In this installment, I analyze not a movie, not a TV show, but a viral dance video: Casey Frey's "Get tf out my way type way." This seemingly simple viral video deserves close inspection because of its masterful editing, camerawork, and storytelling. I'm surprised nobody else has analyzed it in detail before.

Everyone knows that the opening of a film is the most important scene. It needs to immediate familiarize the viewer with the themes and story that are about to come. The opening cut with the wood cutting foreshadows the themes of identity crisis and inner conflict. In just one minute time Frey was able to illustrate a story so strong and immersive that other creators cant achieve in 1+ hours. Anazing

while it's not really a good example of the heros journey, it is a great video to get students to think analytically about media they would never think analytically about. Think of people who say that english teachers just overthink stuff, and that the author didn't intend anything. When in comparison, it becomes very clear that all of this was intended, and interpretations of the video that don't include all the stuff are less interesting because of it.

Can’t believe you don’t make the connection between the protagonist starting off using his hands for physical labour contrasted by the mentor being introduced by effortlessly opening the door with his mind. This shows the audience that he’s from a different world that the protagonist is not yet familiar with and shows the audience the other side of the story circle that the character must cross into in order to emerge more powerful upon his return. Amazing video by the way.

Or maybe the main character uses the mentor as a motivation to bypass the rejection of the antagonist for example the main character may have hallucinated the mentor hence the mentor using powers which obviously isn’t of any human kind. If you notice in the video the antagonist does not notice or give any attention to the mentor. The main character does though, in a way that supports him in overcoming the rejection.

An addition: Characters do not share a frame until the very last shot. Despite not seeing the good, the bad, and the worker ego in the same space, Frey uses "line of sight" editing to create the illusion that these characters are interacting with one another. In the end, the evil Casey is unable to share space with anyone, rejecting the camera entirely, while the good Casey and worker Casey form a union, living not separately but together.

Feel like you should've also mentioned the ending few seconds of the video in which you see the protagonist and the good ego doing different dances. They're both finally doing their own moves and while the mentor looks at him, he appreciates what he's doing and decides to copy the protagonist, showing that he has grown and they're now at a more equal footing. Also showing that the protagonist is embracing his own individuality.

i could do an analysis on this analysis. the comedy comes from the fact that this is not a joke at all but a deep look into a video that may have these themes but could also be a shallow dance video, who’s to say. this video validates the former opinion and gives reasons to feel that way. if it had any hint of a joke during the explanation, the whole video would fall flat. you could watch this as a parody or as a genuine analysis. i choose the latter. thank you, now you see it.

i'd like to point out that the cut on him flipping off the camera -- moving backwards in time on the cut, so you actually see the motion twice -- is a technique used by martial arts filmmakers like jackie chan to make punches feel more impactful. the most fun part of this video is its quality is 100% intentional

Honestly, it’s a brilliant and tentative allegory for the Id, Ego, and Superego of Freudian psychology. At the beginning, the id, a representation for our baser instincts begins to act inexplicably in a way the the Superego, which values order and normality, sees as “dumb”. The ego then emerges and wrests control of the situation, channeling the energy of the id in a heathy manner, and showing the superego that nothing is truly wrong. I believe the face you can see the superego make as they take their glasses off is one of astonishment over the fact that this seemingly meaningless impulse can be used positively, with the final dismissive gesture simply being their acknowledgement that their micromanaging isn’t necessary.
