It would be interesting for Nolan and Deakins to collaborate, as they both have that heightened realism that I love.

It would be interesting indeed...sadly this could never happen since they stand on opposite sides of “filmic naturalism”. Nolan believes that film is the best analogy to the human eye...”The medium is the message”. Deakins doesn’t care about the medium and prefers digital since it’s easier to use.

I think they'd be the worst fit for each other because of their stances on flm formats. Someone like Kaminski or Elswit would be much a better fit from that generation of cinematographers.

Nice breakdown.. Interesting about the minimal color and how that relates to older black and white film, it's subtle but it really makes sense and keeps you in mood of the entirety of the film. Your studio is looking good, hope you're enjoying it.

An interesting breakdown, I appreciate both his realistic & naturalistic approach. Nolan stated that film is the best analogy to the human eye perception, you definitely understand that “the medium is the message” so film automatically takes a higher status than that of a simple format... His cinema gives meaning to the word “film”. I’m glad i found your review of a director’s work I respect!

I don't think a lot of people talk about his visual style vastly transitioned from Interstellar (not even you mentioned it). his style was very consistent from his first movie, up until he worked with Hoyetema. from Interstellar he started using more artificial ambient lighting than natural lights. and he started using this weird color filter that gives the movie green-grey look and the backgrounds always looking moody cloudy, and he doesn't use handheld anymore either, it's mostly big imax steady cams now. personally I don't really like his new style, I liked his original style when he worked with Pfster. which had a more gorilla style, indie film look to it. it made it look apart from all the studio tentpoles of at that time

There are still plenty of handheld shots in Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet. All were shot by Hoytema. I'm pretty sure they even developed an IMAX shoulder rig specifically for Dunkirk. You can see Hoytema using these in behind the scenes. I think a lot of times they're not as noticeable because Nolan uses them sparingly and edits quickly. But his style has been pretty consistent since Memento. All that said, I do love Wally Pfister's work and hope they get to collaborate again.

100% I didn't know that Christopher Nolan was doing the first Dark Knight movie but I instantly thought of Insomnia when I watched it. And that was 100% bc of Pfister.

Awesome video! :) Why do you think do Nolan's movies still differ visually? I mean: they have similar color pallettes, similar lighting and are all shot on film but every film he made has its own look to it somehow.

Thanks Ben! The Opposite of this would be 'high key' where almost the whole face is lit evenly. Check out any comedy from Judd Apatow.

I think it's more becoz he just got exposure to making a comic book IP movie so early in his career, and that movie just turned out to be groundbreaking. so he got the exposure from not only big studios but also general public. I'd say, he sure had his luck. but he also played his cards right, not many directors can choose the right projects in the right time, like him. like Inception came out right outta the hot streak he was in after Dark knight, and Inception boomed his popularity in a global level. and now he is doing a biography, most likely for grabbing a Oscar Lol. hate him if you want but you gotta admit, the guy is smart. he has basically coordinated his entire career plan

It’s interesting...I know recency bias is a thing, but I feel like Nolan is now underrated. Look at his IMDb, I feel like his career (so far) can be put up against ANY all time great director. It’s a fantastic career thus far.
