Oh, have I mentioned that I'm moving to Finland yet? I thought I'd do a quick "citizenship test" to see if I'm worthy of living in Finland!

FYI there's a huge historical mistake in the explanation for the last answer. It says that Sweden lost Finland to Soviet Union, a country which was founded 110 years after the war in question. The country that conquered Finland from Sweden in 1809 was the Russian empire. I had to correct this because some might consider it offending to claim that Finland was ever part of the soviets...
@draczen
@draczen 5 жыл бұрын
Vilppu K Finland broke free (and gained total independency) from Russian Empire the exact same time the soviets had a war against the Prussian ruling elite. It Was a long and horrible civil war where aristocrats, the ruling family and all the loyal people to them fought against the loyal people for soviet leaders (Brohnstein [trotsky] Lenin, Stalin etc). The war of Whites (Russian Empire loyalists) against reds (soviet leader loyalists) was a war that was fought inside Finland faster than in Russian territory and with different outcome. Whites won in Finland and while the war was still ongoing in Russia, Finland was able (and had big pair of balls) to declare independency because Russian empire was losing The war and was unable to stop Finland from leaving. This white against red war was repeated in Finland with same outcome and one of the Royal guards of the prussian ruling family, became a Finnish warhero and eventually The leader of the winterwar (Mannerheim). Sorry for typos, Capital letters and stuff like that. My phone is trying to correct me in every turn... We were not part of soviets but Finland used soviets and turmoil to gain independency. Before that, Finnish people were last european people who left Hunter gatherer lifestyle behind. Finnish people were also last ones to forgot their past and built this cristiendom-cult-style civilisation. This happened right after our independency. We were people of the forest all along but this chanced at that time.

That's just revisionist history. The truth is that we got bored of Sweden, gave them independence and conquered Russia so we can get a border with Japan, for obvious reasons. But that turned out to be a great hassle, so we graciously gave Russia their independence back.

8:15 Let me correct the quiz here. They say the lyrics are originally by Julius Krohn, but that's not true. The FINNISH lyrics are originally by Krohn, but the Swedish lyrics came 19 years earlier, made by Johan Runeberg, and the lyrics were actually a part of his book Fänrik Ståls sägner. But technically, Krohn made the original lyrics if we don't mention Swedish lyrics. I also hope it would've given a Point for choosing "Vårt Land" since that's the name of the Anthem in Swedish, which is our second language and Finland once belonged to Sweden. ya'll just got educated by a sloth

There's an old Kivikasvot song (Tankerous love - that's right: rally-English song from the 70's) where they sing "Sipelius, sauna ja sisu, it's mate in Finland!". And that's what Finland is known about for a very long time besides heavy drinking of Koskenkorva of course 😁. But yes, that's obviously is a bit outdated definition.

@laju
@laju 6 жыл бұрын
Vårt land would also be a correct answer, I wonder if the test would give you a point for that. Since Finland is officially bilingual, the national anthem has Swedish official lyrics too. And an official name in Swedish: Vårt land. In fact, the Swedish name and lyrics are the original ones, Finnish translation came later.

Good job Dave!! Ahrmm... And just so you know there is quite an important error in the 10:th question. "... But once Finland was lost to the Soviet Union, the Russians..." We Finns are quite fond of the fact that the Soviet Union weren't able to conquer us. The capital was changed from Turku to Helsinki about one hundred years before the Soviet Union even existed. It was the Russian empire that seized control of Finland in 1809 which resulted in the changing of the capital.
@TheRawrnstuff

"When Finland was lost to the Soviet Union" refers to the time when Sweden lost the region of Finland to Russia nearly 300 years ago.
@akselitohjonen2064
@akselitohjonen2064 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is exactly my point, yet it happend exactly 209 years ago. But it was not the Soviet Union that took Finland but rather the Tsarist Russian Empire. That happened as a result of the Finnish war 1808-1809. The Soviet Union did not exist until the 1910's.

The way that Sisu was explained to me whilst serving with Finnish Troops was akin to internal Fortitude, Courage to do what is right and Honour and Integrity in doing what is right even when it may not necessarily be the easiest thing to do! I've wondered about how to translate Sisu for a loooooong while, ever since the subject came up with some exchange students. So here's my five cents on it: Sisu is grit, determination and sheer pigheadedness. It's the unwillingness to stop trying even after failing many, -many- times, or to move even when faced by an irresistible force. There's generally a sense of duty there, since even if you have the option of quitting, it's as if it wasn't even there because the power of Sisu compels you to keep going and finish that which you started. And finally, what Sisu drives you to do is never something you do for general acceptance or praise. It's something you do for the sake of others without even expecting to get recognition for it, or for yourself, in which case the only reward you crave is that overwhelming sense of accomplishment and pride that wells from within on a task well done. Also, welcome to Finland on a more permanent basis Dave. This country is that tiny bit better with you in it!

Hey, the best English description of sisu I've come across is by Tolkien. He describes Sam Gamgee transform on the way to Mount Doom: "But even as hope died in Sam, or seemed to die, it was turned to a new strength. Sam's plain hobbit-face grew stern, almost grim, as the will hardened in him, and he felt through all his limbs a thrill, as if he was turning into some creature of stone and steel that neither despair nor weariness nor endless barren miles could subdue." I'd say that kind of sisu is rare even among Finns these days. Tolkien was likely inspired by British soldiers in WW I, to write this.

The closest word i can think of for Sisu is gutsy..like a mix of gutsy, something that means you dont give up easily and maybe stamina or endurance.

I'm 100% Finnish and got the exact same result as you. I've never heard of the phrase "Sauna, Sisu & Sibelius" so I think you're good.

Sisu actually refers to many things, but closest word i could find for Sisu in English is having guts, well 'having guts'' could be used in many different situation and the meaning would differ just like in Sisu.

7. "Maamme" and "Vårt land" are both correct. "Vårt land" (Our land) was written in 1846 by Swedish speaking teacher and poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg, the national poet of Finland. The song was performed in public for the first time in May 13th 1848. (Composed by Helsinki-based German composer/music teacher Fredrik Pacius.) The best known Finnish translation was made over 40 years after the first performance, in 1889. "Mualimamme" is a Savo dialect version of the word "maailmamme" ("our world" in English).
