I'm assuming this is directed at me and sure the message of war is bad is what the movie wants to get across, but as a movie and not a documentary or something along those lines, it is really uncompelling. I'm not going to praise a movie for a message that everyone agrees with when there isn't really any nuance, explanations or character development. It doesn't even really serve as a warning since there is no clear cause or ideology associated with the war.

I'm not sure how much control we have over the lens we view stuff through, especially the closer it hits to your own personal experiences. I think it's interesting though that it sounds like you've seen reviewers who, from what you said, it sounds like are glorifying it almost. I think that was literally the one clear message of the movie, was that it shouldn't be glorified. So that's kinda wild to me.

No, the character were very well developed. The movie also explained why the Civil war happened. The US president turned into a tyrant dictator and Texas and California seceded from the union. Put their differences aside against a larger threat. Probably the second best movie of the year. We dont get real movies like this very often.

This film isn’t really about the journalists at all. Also, the film maker I think takes a side against the Facist President.

It's interesting you say that because it was about half a dozen reviews I watched, including some of the biggest reviewers on youtube. As far as it being about journalists, Alex garland says as much in interviews where he refers to the journalists as the heroes of the movie and talks about the importance of journalists and journalism. Whether or not you think the movie conveys that message well is obviously a different conversation but it was at least the intent as far as i can tell.

I guess it'll largely depend on this opening weekend. $50 mil budget, so probably need to make about 150 to break even (assuming 25 mil for marketing) but I think that really depends on the drop off. American society of magical negros barely lasted 3 weeks. Lol

I think a lot of the scenes in a vacuum could have been interesting but as a movie, it just felt really disjointed and like there wasn't a real story, characters or world building. I've heard of him but not familiar with him really. It always fascinates me when these movies cost 10s to 100s of millions and they have advisors on set and just get simple things wrong.

The movie is a leftist fantasy of themselves rising up to militarily destroy a fictional Trump presidential dictatorship and his fictional racist forces, but with a few things to try to throw a non-observant viewer off the scent. Here are just a couple of clues: 1/3of the way into the movie after the first fire fight on the wall of the building is painted a "W" with pastel "rainbow" colors. W is for woke as much as the "Western Alliance". Later in the movie during the attack on DC one of the female press said "we" (have the White House in our sights), meaning the press was aligned with the Western Alliance and not neutral. Western Forces are racially and gender diverse to a fault, and are meant to be the forces of diversity against the racists.

As far as it being left bent because the creators are left wing, I would concede I don't know if they view their worldview as the norm or default or they were consciously like oh let's make sure we get this in here. Obviously I have no way of knowing. I think I'd be more open to the idea of it being neutral if they made a point to portray left wing or the extreme left as bad in the way they do things associated with the right. They obviously have mindless gun violence, the brutal stuff is in small towns, the jesse plemons scene, all things associated with the right. They reference the massacre of antifa, which makes them sound like victims. If they had said something similar about a right wing group, id go ok theyre at least trying. The only peaceful places we see are cities like Pittsburgh and I cant remember where the refugee camp was but it was peaceful as well just displaced people. And the mindless violence, torture, and racist executions are in rural areas. You could say I'm reading too into it but broadly speaking, if you make a movie about a civil war in America, I assume you know cities are generally left wing and rural areas generally right. And as far as the killing trump, that's why I said leftists instead of leftwing or democrats. But I know people just throw around labels. If it wasn't for everything else, i wouldnt have thought that necessarily. And I agree the journalists don't show any morals but the movie thinks they are heroes and Alex garland refers to them that way in interviews. That final scene I could see interpreting it the way you did but when the main dude is smiling and celebrating getting his quote and all the journalists are celebrating its going to be an execution not arrest, I just didn't see it that way. And I avoid culture war stuff as much as I can as long as it doesn't impact the story but I think this movie hinges on people thinking the culture war will turn into a civil war so it is unavoidable. If the movie was in a made up country, would anyone care about it? I expect people would be way less interested. I keep seeing people say if you want to view it as right wing you can but never really giving examples.

But if Garland himself said he saw the journalists as the heroes and that they were the moral center of the film, then yeah that's not good.

And I get that war journalists are some of the most courageous people and routinely get into dangerous situations, are wounded or are killed, all to document history. But the portrayal of some of them are really not honoring the profession.

It's interesting because to me this could be indicative of the new way to push political stuff. Of course the rest of the ones who do it might not be talented enough to keep it as subtle as Alex garland did to a normal audience.

Capitol O Opinions did a pretty in depth livestream on more of the movie side if you are interested. A lot of the non critic consensus seems to be its just boring lol. Drinker did a video too that I mostly agree with.

I dont mind disagreeing. I don't see movies through a political lens, you're free to go through the rest of my channel. I generally avoid it as long as it doesn't impact the story. I think it is interesting you viewed it as a critique of the mainstream media when the journalists were the heroes of the movie, which Alex garland has referred to them as.

I talk about it as much as it's necessary to discuss the movie. The director deliberately picked arguably the most political setting he could to get the audience into theaters. If the movie wasn't about a civil war in America in the near future, no one would be talking about it. The movie doesn't really have anything to say beyond war bad, journalist good. I made similar criticisms to the ladyballers movie created by dailywire. That movie was overtly political and preachy, so I said as much. All I can do is give my opinion on how I see it.

That's fine if you don't agree but Alex garland does call the journalists the heroes of the story. I actually agree it makes them look sociopathic lol but I'm not sure it was deliberate. As far as the politics, I will concede I assume all of Hollywood is left wing except for a handful of people like Clint Eastwood or whoever. But I think if it was any 1 or 2 of the things I mentioned, I would probably have just ignored it. But when it's a bunch and there wasn't anything that I would call right wing, I'm not giving them the benefit of the doubt.

Anybody with an ounce of political acumen could see all the clues that this was anti-Trump and pro-leftist. Anyhow, I thought the movie sucked and the combat scenes were ok but you could tell that a lot of this script was written before the Ukraine war as drones played no part in it. The portrayal of these wartime journalists did them no favors.

Well its too bad you didn't enjoy it after spending time and money but yea its pretty transparent and the lack of world building and character really kills any emotional investment

@@filthycasual69 It's a disappointing. I've seen a couple of other A24 movies and I've liked their originality and character development. This movie did a very poor job of that. The only character I liked was the old journalist and I liked the town that refused to participate. That's about all.

As far as the "journalists as heroes" argument goes, while I can't find anything where Garland specifically says that, I think what that would mean is that the characters are the protagonists of the story, not that they do anything particularly heroic. I seriously doubt the unlikability for the main characters is "incompetence" on Garland's part. If you didn't like the movie that's one thing, it certainly has its flaws, but wanting it to be a different story is weird. Go write a better movie.

I posted the interview in another comment somewhere in these a while ago where he refers to them as the heroes of the movie. I'm sure he is capable of differentiating between protagonists and heroes, so im taking him at his word. Also, in the movie the young girl refers to kiersten Dunst as her hero and a huge crux of the story is how brave they are for doing what they do and how important journalism is. So I think the intent is pretty clear within the movie as well as outside of it. I don't want it to be a different movie, I wanted it to be a good movie, which I don't think it was. I love the "go write your own" argument. As if no one can say bad movies are bad until they've written one.

I totally respect not wanting to get into a "left vs. right" debate here, but I brought it up within the context of the movie which, like it or not, is going to spill over into rl due to the subject matter. And while I'm sure Garland said the journalists were the heroes or whatever, a closer reading of the actual material in the film is a much more layered and nuanced message. You're right that the characters themselves think they are brave and noble (and say it a lot) but even a novice media consumer can understand the difference between text and subtext. The protagonists are constantly making stupid, selfish choices and the only "heroics" they engage in are a pair of hollow self-sacrifices so that the rest of them can continue on their ill-conceived mission to get a scoop. A.G. has a proven body of work behind him so I'm confident this is not bad writing, but an intentional choice. The message to me is clear: journalism is in a rotten and dangerous state right now, and unchecked it will lead us into misery. the "go write a better movie" barb was not a snarky attempt to invalidate your right to criticism. I think you are more interested in a story about the internal politics of a modern US conflict, as the main gripe you spoke about is the movie's lack of definition in that realm. You're obviously intelligent and can write a script and I would be interested in your more straightforward political content so feel free to link it and I'll subscribe to that channel. @theodoremcdonald9471 I haven't seen all of his work but I really liked ex machina and have heard good things about 28 days later. People seem mixed on his other stuff from what I hear. It's interesting you're saying it's layered and deeper than I'm giving it credit for because i watched about a half dozen reviews from other youtubers before I watched the movie (which I normally don't do) but every single one talked about how they thought the movie really made it clear how important journalists really are and similar statements in that vein. This is kinda weird because I actually agree with your interpretation about the journalists in the movie but not that it was the movie's intent. The interviews I'm referring to are his with the AP and Jake's Takes (on youtube, both about 7 minutes). In the AP one he calls journalists as important as doctors and goes into great detail about their importance and his reverence for them. Maybe you're right and he is criticizing something he reveres (like Orwell with 1984) but I don't believe it to be the case. As far as my own bias slipping in, maybe that's the case but in the majority of things I talk about media wise, I only talk about it to the extent I believe it impacts the movie. This movie, where he and it are both deliberately vague and believe it to be neutral was really the issue I had. If he had called it Trumps Civil War and had the proud boys as the villains, I honestly wouldn't have cared. Lol. Just as an aside, this and my Ladyballers video (the Dailywire movie) are my 2 most political I've done and last I checked, Ladyballers was my most disliked. (Might be Godzilla x Kong now). But I'd still concede I have my own beliefs and I'm sure they seep in sometimes. As to what I'd do to change this movie, I actually think it's broken at the premise. He wanted neutral political journalists but then used the back drop of an American Civil War which is super divisive. If he wanted the politics to be neutral to focus on the journalists, I actually think that could be done fairly easily. For example, if you're going to use real political groups (antifa) just use one from each side. I.e. instead of the antifa massacre, describe an event where a right wing group and antifa were fighting in the streets and the president massacred both. He refers to the president as a fascist in his interviews (can't remember if it was in the movie). Have people refer to him as a fascist in some spots and commie in others. We had the Jesse plemons right wing anti immigrant racist character. Have one of the encounters where the group doing executions is doing it to people who were "in the 1%." Those are all choices that were made and were more my issue with people referring to it as "politically neutral." Obviously a lot of people disagree with me though. I don't mind. I also think it might have been smart character wise and maybe even world building wise to have the journalists have actual opinions and disagree, but he avoided that at all costs.

That's cool you enjoyed it. I think the concept could have been interesting but the world building was pretty non existent. I made this right after I saw the movie and thought it was okay but the longer time has gone on, I think it's actually a bad movie relying almost solely on the fact that people think we are on the way towards a civil war. But to each their own, plenty of people really liked it.
