I'll never forget rushing home to watch the TV show Something Else ("the show made by kids for kids") and watching the Clash playing Tommy gun that week. That was a great TV show and was very out of the ordinary for TV ideas at the time, most were made by stuffy men in flared nylon suits whereas with Something Else teenagers were given the chance to control the direction of the show and choose the bands, most were the punk bands of the time, big and not so well known, for example they introduced me to Joy Division in the 1970s. It's one of those shows alongside Revolver that deserve to be reshown because the audience were a part of the show which is fun to look back on, check out the clips from both shows that are on KZfaq and see the cute, funny young punk teens of the day, it makes me feel I was there it stirs so many memories.

I think most would say Yes it does (the first lp ,or London calling or Sandinista! were better ) After the 79 tours most tracks from the lp were dropped from the live set .'Safe european home' being the only track that was a regular...

Also, being a bit younger and not a W1 trendy, I always thought Rope was a fantastic album and - still to this day - think it's a much better album than the first one! I think the first album is great but, y'know, very few people were part of the original central London punk scene of musicians, managers, designers and journalists - and I wasn't one of them! For us kids, the "politics" of that scene weren't an issue for us. This was just exciting rock n roll from people we could identify with and we looked up to. They looked and sounded great and represented what we felt in what they said and wrote. Whether they used an American "name" producer and had "strayed" from their original perceived Red Army Faction with guitars image meant absolutely nothing to us. I think people forget when they think about UK punk that, as great a writer someone like Jon Savage is, that idea of punk was, by and large, not remotely the experience of the kids / fans outside the capital or who weren't part of that original inner circle. Whilst we're at it, and contrary to received wisdom, I think the second albums by the Jam, the Stranglers and the Damned were all better albums than their first attempts and not universally condemned by all fans as journalists would have you believe.

Due to my age (12 in may 1977 ) I purchased 'rope' 1st.... & got the debut in 79... I thought 'rope" was good but I felt 'the Clash' was in a different league ...I knew nothing about the US producer & was genuinely shocked when I found out the debut 'wasnt suitable for US airplay ' Listening to bootlegs & seeing the group I think recording 'rope ' helped make them a great live band .....but if others enjoy rope more than their debut ..nothing wrong with that.. I've always liked Sandinista! more than London Calling...

The 'red army faction' , H block tshirts ,Northern ireland 'terrorist chic ' really appeared in 78 & was part of the 'rope' scene ...as for the Damned & Jam 2nd lps ..well there was a good thing about them...you could get them cheap in 2nd hand shops.... Yr not going to say Sid sings is better than 'bollocks by any chance?

Don't you think that it's better to listen to music on its merits rather than as a 'aide to nostalgia' ...I may have liked the UK Subs but there was room for improvement...I don't feel I'm 'cheating' by' upgrading my old selections' for something better ...

I took a chance on the second LP. Walked into a store right after it had been released and bought it after maybe hearing a few tracks on college radio. Compared to their first LP I didn't really like it at first but it grew on me. It didn't sound anything at all like their first LP, which I bought the CBS import version of as soon as I could find it. Wasn't going to wait for it to come out over here. When it did it wasn't the same.

I always loved the sound of the guitars, drums and voiced on Give em enough rope but, even as a kid, thought the bass sound he captured was very flat. That said, after all these years, I can't imagine it sounding any different. As regards London Calling (the album), I've always loved the sound of the album and still do. It's Bill Price really though isn't it. Guy Stevens (at best) was producer only in the sense that he was an inspiration to the band. The arrangements were largely Jonesy and the engineering / capturing of the sound was down to Bill Price and Jeremy Green and (again) Jonesy. The same trio as was used on the Cost of Living EP. The sound of Sandanista is fantastic as is Combat Rock (to a lesser extent: it's a little dated in parts nowadays). The first album and singles? Not really much "production" there is there? Just pointing mics and pressing record. Successful sometimes, less so others but it didn't really matter cos' the songs and playing were that strong. And, it was the Clash after all! So, over all, I love the way the Clash sound on record (with the odd caveat as mentioned above). Now, a band that I was never really convinced were captured as well in the studio as live were the Who - but their records were great as well.... So who cares?

Give Em Enough Rope is an under valued album......Where as with the first album they said they wanted it to convey the raw energy of a live Clash gig....... but it just sounds like it was recorded in a trashcan to me.

il disco più elaborato in studio, i lsecondo è sempre i l più difficile. Comunque chitarre troppo prevalenti e troppo alte nel missaggio. Non è il mio preferito ma ci sono capolavori come tommy gun e stay free

Every album they recorded was ruined in the post production and poor quality recordings. But Rope was as good as anything they made and never got its true credit. So many of the bootlegs and live recordings captured the true Spirit of The Clash so much better. Most of the official albums sound like they were recorded in a trash can !
