The class 70 diesels - an unloved design?

The Class 70 is a Co-Co mainline freight diesel locomotive manufactured by General Electric in Erie, Pennsylvania. They are operated in the United Kingdom by Freightliner and Colas Rail. With a tractive effort of 120,000 lbf they have the highest tractive effort of any diesel loco in this country.
Sadly, the class has not proved to be too popular and at one point in 2020 all of the Freightliner examples were in store. A few were re-instated, but these days, it is the Colas-branded examples that seem to me the most seen in this area.

I am a fan of the Class 70s - I like the design of them, sound of the engines etc. It seems a shame that they're not popular amongst many.

I agree, the 70's seem to have a bit of magic about them, maybe their rarity helps!

I like the look of them and at least they make a change from a class 66! I wonder why they are not popular with the operating companies.

not popular with operating companies? don't think so apart from being worked into the ground the are doing a great job freightliner 70s on intermodel colas 70s on everything except passenger trains !!!for a small class they are doing a great job

The amount of enthusiasts on carlisle station taking photos of them tell me they are popular people i speak to love them me i absolutely adore them and have done so since day one

Superb to drive. Comfortable, quiet (inside) and draught free! Haulage wise they will pull a mountain down. No complaints from me and pretty dam close to what a 60 will haul. Just a little quicker! JG.

I spent 30 years of my life driving mainly freight loco’s on the WCML. I did a short stint on passenger work but went back to freight after only 4 years! In that time I signed over 20 different types of traction and had an extensive route card. I can honestly say I NEVER detested a loco as much as I hated the class 70! If you started me off on the why question I would be here all day but give me a 66 over a 70 every F#£(i%g time!

Very similar to our AC44C6M's here in the States, obvious difference is our powers weight and tractive effort (180,000 pounds and 200,000 pounds starting)

I don't mind them & I'm not a fan of anything especially modern per se. But both this & the Class 68s aren't too bad. Potentially future classics I would say. I'm a big fan of the Bachmann 00 gauge Class 70 model & (quite extravagantly) had both 003/006 models til recently. At a coin toss, I kept 70006 & let 003 go for someone else to enjoy. It's probably one of THE most accurate 4mm models in recent times.

I think that enthusiasts love the class 70' but the operating companies are not impressed by availability issues.

Maybe it's an age thing. When you grew up with class 20's, 25's, 31's, 37's, 44's etc and see this modular, angular, boxy design it's hard to take to them.

i like u.k of its variaryty of trains old and brand new models i cant same about are railway in netherlands but the one miljon dollar qestion is wy tey are build but not populair to drive with in compare to other classes like the 66 for example have tey a weaknes ore tey have to much malfunktions ? just curous greets from netherlands

I am just not a fan of the ugly face. It looks like some gave up on the design and kicked it, then ended up with it. As an old fashioned ex railwayman I have nothing against it as a loco, just that face. Sorry folks. I don't think the anaemic Colas livery helps either, the Rail freight green looks better, but hey ho, they are what they are. 👍👍👍. Great video too 👍👍👍
