Journey to the Chateau

Күн бұрын

In this week's Friday episode, Patrick and Stuart are working with visiting patron/volunteer Donna and her son Jack to move an old iron trough that is partially buried behind the chateau. The trough will become a landscape feature for outside of the chateau chapel. Patrick also has an interview with Donna inside the chapel to talk about how she became interested in french chateaux channels on KZfaq and what she would like to do to help the chapel at the Château de Colombe.
Other channels mentioned in this video:
‪@TheChateauDiaries‬
‪@chateaudelalacelle‬
‪@BordeauxLife‬
Join Patrick and Stuart on their journey to find a neglected, forgotten, or crumbling château or castle in France, and then continue to follow them as they work on its restoration, rénovation, decoration, and furnishing. Along the way, they will also create and share videos on their preparation for having gîtes for guests, and an event venue in their chateau (wedding, birthday, anniversary, organization or club meetings, retreats, etc.).

Am I the only one who finds it hard to believe Donna is old enough to be Jack's mom? She made me laugh when she said, "I'm an older woman, let's face it" -- oh, to have her energy at any age!

Hey guys, the "channel" is called the valley on a roof system. I have been in building since I was knee high to a duck. I have renovated many older homes in my years and want to very much to get to France to volunteer for y'all. I just have to find a way over there. LOL Seriously though, I can do just about any type of work and know I would be of great help. I guess I need to coordinate with Donna on how to get myself and my husband there. I told him that is how we are going to spend our retirement. Volunteering in France for chateau owners.

A big shout out to everyone there and again to Donna with the chapel and bringing her son with her son to help. It is a pleasure that we from distance away get to see these beautiful chateaus brought back to life. I like to say the Phoenix rising from the ashes beauty explodes and I am sure when this process whether with the chapel and of course the chateau. You can see this in each video and I am loving the journey. I love the way Donna put it, especially during covid of watching Stephanie, Anna and Ed. Ash and Terry and of course now with Patrick and Terry. It is amazing how these videos have brought so many people together in admiring something of old from yesterday. I could go on talking but I'm going to end it for now and save some of my words for a later time. But thank you Donna for coming back with your son and we look forward to seeing you all out through this journey with these two guys. God bless you all and much love❤

Hi guys, I loved the music when Patrick came in with the tractor. It looked like he went into full character. Brilliant. It got the job done well. It is a lovely idea to up cycle it as a flower bed for the chapel. I loved the interview. I respect Donna for her devotion to her faith. I was brought up in a devout family. I was a lay minister for years, and I even did a year of contemplation on becoming a priest. Being gay was in conflict with the church. I maintained my faith but stopped practicing when I was sick in hospital with my doctors in fear I may die. I met a priest doing his rounds and asked for prayer, which he kindly did a prayer for the sick. I asked him shortly after I was well again if I could attend church and recieve sacraments like communion. He told me, knowing I had told him, I am married to a man, "Peter, I think you know the answer to that:. He said I was welcome to attend services but he would not serve me communion. Well, I knew this all along, but it hasn't stopped my faith. I don't attend church but my faith remains strong. I know God blessed me with this life and I am forever humble and grateful for it. Sorry, I digressed. I love the plans for the chapel and if I hear shout any statues that you are looking for, I will definitely send along. Love and best wishes to all.❤

Thank you, firstly for the comment but secondly for your story. I am so sorry. Something I heard once from a man of faith…… God doesn’t make mistakes. 👍🏻. And if we are all made in the image of God……. Shouldn’t you receive the sacrament? Oh dear we are in deep here. 😮😊. I am grateful you shared this. One day we might actually chat in the chapel. Hugs from Colombe ❤❤❤

Oh what a story. Why don’t you just go back to mass and look at that crucifix and just have a wonderful hour long visit with God between you and him and just leave the church out of it. For whatever it's worth, I rather enjoyed the interview. I often wonder about the Patrons of the various channels that I follow. I would love to know more about Rob, who has volunteered at Château de la Lacelle and Château de la Ferté. I seem to recall that he visited your Château with Terry and Ash. He works really hard on dirty and tedious projects. He's amazing! Stephanie Jarvis did sit down interviews with her volunteers a while back. She has quite a cast of characters surrounding her. There's content forever. When Donna mentioned Mary blue, I knew immediately the color she was referencing. Anyone familiar with Catholic iconography knows the exact shade. Many depictions of her for hundreds of years has her clothed in the blue tunic. Glistening stars will be a lovely addition to the night sky. I love the idea of preserving the original purpose of the structure. There are times when a place of quiet reflection is a welcome and valuable asset. Guests at your Château will find their way there often enough. It's certainly large enough for small gatherings and ceremonies or celebrations. Perhaps it's not a priority part of the Château restoration, but it will require very little maintenance once finished. ❤ from TX!

Thank you very much. I love to do interviews because everyone has a story worth telling and sharing. The talks can be very informal….. a chat on the kitchen table for example. I agree with you. It is interesting. The chapel will be a place for quiet contemplation for anyone who likes to enjoy that. It is important for the chateau because it always played an important role. Love your comment. ❤❤❤

The gutter between two roofs where they meet in a V is called here in the uk, a valley gutter. If you don't keep an eye on them they can be a great source of trouble, especially in Autumn. Make sure your metal goes up each side of the valley to a generous amount so that leaves and detritus don't decompose to soil and fill the valley bottom thus allowing the water over the valley metal edge in a harsh storm.

Hi Patrick and Stuart, The interview with Donna in the chapel was very informative. While she was explaining the steps involved in the ceiling restoration a thought came to me, consider using the same color (off-white) on the ribs or structural elements of the ceiling. The contrast of the blue with gold stars, and the off-white would look great. Reaching out to folks watching the vlog is a great way to get donations of artifacts for the chapel. Along the lines of a painting or wall hanging for the chapel, possibly a religious tapestry might work well. Mark & Scott

Patrick, Those troughs are valuable. At a antique store they would cost a thousand dollars and up. I thought you might want to know before you grab another with the "claw".😂 I love your plans for the chapel. It will be perfectly imperfect, which is the most charming of all. I also wanted to say that you and escape to the dream are my favorite KZfaq channels. You both are real, no pretense, humble, and kind. You don't try manipulate viewers in a effort to gain money and that alone places you head and shoulders above other channels. Others may have came before you, but you show them how it should be done. Thank you for another great episode.

Good morning Patrick & Stuart, this was an exceptional video in many ways. Yes, moving that super heavy trough, and Jack, what a brain. I knew the only thing that could move that heavy box would be a forklift or a tractor, and voila!! So glad you kept the weight just above the ground level and when Jack climbed onto the back to keep the tractor steady, yup, just the boys from Texas knows how to handle that situation. It was great fun and a smashing idea. Donna is truly a beautiful person. She is absolutely correct in saying now that I am an older woman/person I can do this! There is a time and place for every situation in our lives. I remarked about my past one evening and I do recognise, there is absolutely nothing we can do to change those incidents, they are gone forever, how we reacted at the time is more important than now. So we do not always think back on the past, we do not go and dwell there, but I can admit to something which was wrong and yes we have regrets, yet you have to have the blessing, a gift, of "over coming". That is what makes us stronger and helps us to move on. The conversation in the Chapel with Donna and Patrick was most "intense". Donna was so sincere, she just poured her heart out, her passion for the Chapel is quite overwhelming to say the least. What a special person, a treasure to meet along your road of life. The world is in a terrible state presently, most of the problems the humans have brought upon themselves, our coasts have been hammered by the terrifying tides, just walls and walls of water coming in and smashing on the shore and those homes were mostly doomed. Why do people build so close on the shore?, is there no more common-sense left, developers do not care as long as they can make profits and this happens across the world. I am making a statement saying - praise the Lord there are many people out there with integrity, genuine people that care. It is a beautiful sunny day here on the Highveld, I bought some Louisiana Irises yesterday, and I will treasure them as the previous ones I listened to others and I lost my precious plants :( so all is not lost, I will do my best. We have tidying up to do, so I will be having a busy Saturday me and James my husband. Many many blessings for all do take care. Kind regards, Elize. 😍❤ Do watch the Super Moon tonight it is so beautiful

I'm so glad she is taking on the Chapel project. Stuart i know you been to Stephanie's chapel, the golden stars will look great ., perhaps use stencils, or if you see a design 🤔 that you like you can trace onto tracing paper, plastic, etc .. and transfer onto the prepped walls when ready. I've been to many of the German church's in Bavaria as well as areas of Quebec in my travels, looking at many of "personal" family chapels on property owners property that butt up along the St. Lawrence Seaway. These faith believing people built small chapels, some sizes of small sheds others larger. Each family made their own private, humbly constructed "special place" to be with their God in private to worship. Along the St Lawrence, around Quebec, i found many families in older times relied on earnings to feed their families as seafarers. Privately they might have had prayer asking "possibly asking God " for safety for their family" and or ask bring back the fishing fleets that made their ways out to the seas. If you have private email i can forward different photos of ideas .. ..again I know you must have seen chapels like Maria Gren in Germany, etc .. I might just sign up as a patron on this one !! Lol

As churches are closing all over France too there may be very old - 16/17 century maybe-religious objects. As the churches are owned by the state I guess you would have to approach the government department concerned, about that.

Would the chapel walls have originally been decorated? Many of the original decorations in chapels and cathedrals were painted out by later generations. The cathedral in Albi is a magnificent example. Locally we have a National Trust property The Vyne , a Tudor Palace that has an exquisite, small, private chapel that has the original decoration. With Stuart's skills, longer term maybe that is something to consider. Hope you can find a traditional plasterer who will use lime plaster.❤

In small private chapels in France, the walls were mostly plain white. The ceiling was often decorated. The wall decorations came in the 1800s for private chapels but were found in the d Middle Ages long before than. Than’ you so much. Love your comment. ❤❤❤

I have been to Columba twice and I can tell you the actual Chateaux itself is really pretty large. As you look to the right of it that entire wing is completely in need of restoration and I believe that’s where the original kitchen was and you can tell when you go through it that it could easily be several guest suites with bathrooms, etc. behind the Château are several barn type facilities that could easily be used for weddings, etc., I think that’s where the livestock was held. The gite I stayed in was an outbuilding and I don’t think it’s real old but it’s very well done but the actual property goes back many many acres. Part of the château as you’re looking at it to the right, was sold off to another buyer. Anyway, when you’re there you get the feeling that this was an entirely huge farm compound. It’s out in the middle of the country and the land around. It looks like it was utilize for farmland. Anyway, I was just trying to give you a good description of it. Hope that helps. B

Just make sure the statues that will go on those shelves (built in 1640?) are not too heavy. You don't want to have a shelf crumble under a statue.

Well am going on no news is good news - the pups are foing well as last week or VID couple had health issues. Traditional statuary more likely found closer to the south Mexico & Canada. Think everythink gone Mo Dern in last 40-50 yrs my opinion only!

Hi, Your vision for the chapel will take you on a gorgeous journey. Consider getting a Byzantine icon of Mary and the baby Jesus. (I don’t think you are going to find anything with Joseph unless it is an image of the Nativity scene. You may consider a trilogy of the Virgin Mary in the nativity scene, next to the cross in the Crucifixion and then her annunciation. I have seen many icons in auctions and there are many you can source in Greece. Protestant and Catholic churches have them too. Research these in images and you will be the idea. Vicki

Thank you. Vicki. Since the chapel is from the 1600s, I think we would prefer the imagery of Mary (Auspice Maria) from pre-Vatican 2 which would depict the Universal and the truly Divine rather than the individual and human. That would be more traditional and iconographically correct for an old chapel. The imagery of St. Joseph is actually used quite a lot, since he is the Patron Saint of fathers, refugees, workers, travelers, families, and of the dying. The imagery of him for the chapel would not be the same as Joseph in the nativity. We know that finding these will be a challenge and it may take some time, which is why we have Donna taking the lead to help us out. Thanks!

Check artisans of Perú, Ecuador and México. They can reproduce spanish barroque, or create something new that take form beauty from different cultures.
