The Next Generation of Atlanta Motor Speedway is all-new from top to bottom; literally. While race fans and racers alike will notice the steeper, 28-degree banked corners, the new AMS also has new, clever features hidden beneath the surface.
Together, Atlanta Motor Speedway's new drainage system and open drainage layer (ODL) will work to clear excess ground water away from the racing surface, allowing racing to resume quick and extending the life of the new track.

FYI - The ODL layer that you see in this video will not be the top layer of asphalt when the project is complete. In fact, you won't be able to see the ODL at all once paving is complete.

@UC1AsKIdm0YBb8t6EKYz5j0Q Weepers are caused by excess ground water coming back up through the track. That's what the ODL and drainage system are meant to address - excess water already underneath the racing surface, not so much water coming from up top. Of course we would rather not need it at all and have our race weekends be dry and full of sunshine!

JFCrist, drainage asphalt is used on bridges and highways near or trough cities or noise sensitive areas in Europe for 15+ years. It is safer in wet conditions and priduces less noise but in winter has to be salted to stay dry or it can separate from base layer or crumble from freezing. Question is, do they collect the drained water in oil separators or do they just let fuel, oil and other liquids just go with the flow?
@tippyc2

The Us has also started implementing it as a surface layer on highways, but i hadn't heard of it crumbling in cold weather. Learn something new every day
@goodiezgrigis
@goodiezgrigis 2 жыл бұрын
@@tippyc2 it isn't a rule it that it would crumble, but if it freezes full of water the potential is there. Specially in the tire tracks, where ice in the drainage layer can thaw from tire heat and hydraulic pressure of trapped water can cause crumbling of the surface. If you manage it like a normal road with salts (same amounts as regular roads) it is ok.

With a layer of more "normal" asphalt over it, it will be just like always. Even though that's how they demonstrated it, it's not liquids coming from the top-down, that is what it is for draining away, it's the weepers that come from the bottom-up that will be able to drain away before it forces itself to the surface, and weaken the top.

I have said this 6 years ago when this came out that they need to do this to every race track nascar and local asphalt tracks especially five flags speedway since it's getting replaced before 2022 season and they only replaced the front stretch turn 4 to middle of turn 1 and 2 and rest js still the old surface so this is gonna be weird racing on this year. And this asphalt needs to be done at every track. I have 23 hours of driving time around the old atalanta motor speedway surface 4 years ago when I was a driving instructor for a racing experience I was the pro driver he gave ppl the ride alongs in the double seated cup car and my first few laps ever there with a legit 500 hp 76000 rpm old cup car that had the right gearing I went 176 mph and that is flying in a old wore out cup car that hasn't been setup in years just had the tire stagger right and the air pressures right and added some cross and sway bar adjustments and some wedge adjustments sonit will handle it was awsome giving ppl rude alongs that fat. But the old surface was brutal I burned up a set of tires in 20 laps going as hard and fast as I could with every passenger and the surface got greasy and slippery as day went on. I drove sat and Sunday and the d surface was a drivers track but this new monster is gonna be crazzy. So since North wilkesboro is being rebuilt they need to add more banking to it as well and this sane surface also its gonna need to be repaved I ran a latemodel Asa race there about 14 years ago when I was like 14 or 15 and it shredded tires and had no grip
@DDS029
@DDS029 2 жыл бұрын
They just ruined the track. Forget the asphalt. That's going to mean nothing in the long run. It's the reconfiguring of the banking. They took away the the top and with narrowing the actual racing surface, they won't have the effective racing grooves to give up. They've had some of the best racing even in the original design, and some of the closest finishes even after they swapped straights, and gave it the "quad-oval" configuration. Many times you had to wait for the finish line, because where cars were coming out of turn 4 didn't mean much of anything.

I believe tire testing will happen this year. Will be interesting to see how the tires will wear with the new surface.
@badbooking3221
@badbooking3221 2 жыл бұрын
My educational guess is that the tires will wear almost not at all, BUT the sheer amount of speed all the way around will generate massive amounts of tire heat which will probably cause a few tire-related accidents. Always happens on brand new asphalt. As the track ages and the tires start to legitimately wear, the heat in the tires will coincide with the wear.

At the time I'm writing this, tire testing just finished for Cup. Today was Xfinity cars. The drivers said it's Atlanta . . . but it's NOT Atlanta. New car, new track, throw away the old notes. Nothing means anything anymore there. And again, that wasn't the final layer. The final layer was more of a "normal" asphalt.

I mean this is kind of important too. Can't have great racing if there's no racing at all due to poor drainage from rain
@DDS029
@DDS029 2 жыл бұрын
@@dannicolmatthew The rain drainage will be no different than any other track! This is done to prevent the weepers that come up from below, and the ground water that gets under the wall, then under the top layer of asphalt. That, if allowed to put hydraulic pressure on the top layer from below is what ruins the surface, and weakens the "seams" where each pass of the paver went.

I feel like this wouldn't work well on northern tracks, because if it snowed a foot and then melted and refroze every night, it would destroy that surface.

Yes in 2017 they were going to repave it after the race weekend and the drivers demanded they leave it alone, that's a case where ignoring the drivers would be a good idea, they should have already done it years ago.
