It's always sad when a ride closes and lives on only in people's memories. It's even sadder when it's a ride so iconic to its park like Volcano was. Volcano was my first launch coaster so I'll never forget that experience.

Nobody, not even staff, knew it was closing until this past week. Volcano had been down for extensive maintenance since last May, but apparently the bugs got too great. Man, I bet KD just won't look the same without this thrill machine anymore. :-(

I've been watching a lot of theme park videos lately and this is the first one I've seen dedicated solely to a ride at my home park instead of just mentioning it in passing. I'm not a coaster fan (other than Volcano's neighbor Avalanche) and haven't been there in years, but I always loved watching Volcano, especially that fireball. Everyone loved it. It's closing was truly shocking. Thank you for taking me back down memory lane.

Mt. Kilimanjaro was actually opened before the addition of the Lost World Mountain. The coaster originally was planned to have way more theming than it did, like a nightly live show, but never was fulfilled due to budget cuts. You can still see track to Haunted River to this day, as well as the Smurf mountain ride queue. Who knows what will happen. It's so sad and a centerpiece of the Safari Village area.

Wow! This came out of nowhere. I remember riding this back in 2010. My Boy Scout troop was there for the centennial that year in VA and we had enough time (and money) to spend a day at KD. Out of the 10 or so coasters I rode (13 year old me skipping the more intense rides like Intimidator 305) this was one of the best. The ride system was something I had never experienced prior, the thrill factor was through the roof (or volcano hole in this instance), and even today it remains one of my favorite coasters I've riden ever. Sad to see this one go but if they keep the mountain look for the new ride I'd chalk up this as a bittersweet loss. If not, and the mountain has to go, it's like thinking of Disney without the castle: the skyline is going to look real different, and it's going to take some time to get used to it.

Unfortunately the last time Volcano operated was around early May 2018. Over the last few years Volcano spent more time down for maintenance than operating. I luckily got on it a few times last year without knowing it would be the last time ever riding it. Reports from the park was that they were torn between trying to fix it just to have it break again, or just finally pull the plug and put effort into making something new in its place.

That looks like such a cool ride, and truly unique. I can't help but feel that more needs to be done to 'preserve' these types of rides into the future, like is done with woodies.... before you know it every original steel coaster will have vanished or been replaced, and such unique & creative rides deserve to continue to deliver fun to more generations! Just the idea of 'erupting' from the volcano is worth keeping IMO 🌋

Wow, Kings Dominion!! I went the first year they opened, my family went pretty much every year in the 70s. We couldn't wait until the mountain was finished. We rode all the original rides in there, loved it. When Kings Dominion was Hanna Barbera themed, it was so much fun. After the early 80s, I only went back once in the mid 90s when Paramount owned it, Volcano hadn't opened yet, and now I'm sorry I won't have the chance to ride it, even if we do head back this year. Great vid, I've been watching your channel for a while & always appreciate the quality work you do. Thanks for the trip down memory lane in the old Mountain of Dreams 😀

I’ll never forget when I was 14 or 15 and me and my cousin were at the park. It rained hard for like an hour and the park emptied out. We stuck around and the rides all reopened. We went to the volcano and there was no line and we could keep riding without getting off. We had to have gone at least 10 times in a row. A very precious memory for sure. I’m just sad my daughter never got to ride it.

One of my favorite rides. (Born in 2000) I remember being a kid and not being able to ride it yet. I waited years and I enjoyed every minute of it when i was finally big enough. Now it stands as nothing. I’m not sure what there plans are but it breaks my heart. I wish they would re do it and make it better. They’re sticking with the jungle theme

King's Dominion was my home park growing up and it's so cool to see that footage of its early days because my experiences with it started in the 90s. I remember when Volcano was built and being too scared to ride it because I wasn't an enthusiast yet. Also, it seemed like it was literally always down for part or all of the day whenever I visited and that stayed true for years. I did eventually ride it a few times, but nothing close to the many dozens of times I've been on all the other coasters in the park. It was an awesome ride! Fast and thrilling and unique. Too bad it's closing but it did seem to have a lot of problems so I'm not surprised either.

They need to pull a Kennywood with this iconic classic coaster. Kennywood park took Steel Phantom a coaster with a history of disdain and complaints and made its successor, Phantoms Revenge. Knowing Cedar Fair, it probably will go to the landfill. It's probably not structurally sound to reuse for a dark ride or something. There were two dark rides in there until the mid-90's, Haunted River and Smurf Mountain. I hated Paramount's decisions to remove slow and family rides from the park in favor of fast coasters and other rides that appealed to teens and thrillseekers as well as theming everything to Paramount movies. They removed the steam train Old Dominion Line after 1995, they built an Xtreme SkyFlyer where the train station was. Kings Island still has their steam train since 1972. But KI, KD, Carowinds got Scooby Doo Haunted Mansion rides that are now Boo Blasters.

I rode this in 1999 when it was brand new. The fire effect was pretty spectacular. I had been to the park one other time, in 1981. So I also got to ride the Land of the Doose train ride. I missed the opportunity to ride the Haunted River due to being a chicken. We also rode the safari monorail, which the video neglects to mention had a tunnel through the mountain. Rather than tear down or neglect the mountain I'd say bring back the Haunted River and Land of the Doose rides. Without movie tie-ins, please, if that could be accomplished.

I've been on every ride in smurf mountain. And yes. There was vomit and chewing gum everywhere. The haunted river was terrifying as a child. There was a skeleton animatronic that held up a barrel that gave me nightmares for years. The volcano was a great ride but I still have more love for the grizzly and rebel yell. Hi! I got a little bit of insider information, and it's worth mentioning that the mountain itself is part of the reason why the ride has to go. If it were as simple as a refit of the launch system, it would have been easy (relatively speaking), but because the mountain itself is also starting to deteriorate, the entire thing more or less has to go. Hopefully this ends up not being the case, but it seems like 40 years has done a number on the volcano.

Honestly I don’t remember off the top of my head, but I’m more than happy to defer to you on this one. I was just told the fiberglass was deteriorating, so not that the mountain was structurally compromised just that it was showing it’s age.

Sad to see this ride go it became my favorite. I had the last ride of the night the day this coaster closed. Gonna miss it and hope something great replaces it. All last year we were filled with hope that the coaster was being refurbished. Clearly not :(

I remember going to Kings Dominion when I was 4 at 2004/2005. Surprised I don't remember seeing this. I do remember a coaster that went completely sideways at one point.

I never knew that the volcano wasn’t the Coaster originally I didn’t think that dark rides were in it before the Coaster itself! Great video Sam!

Damn you are fast, I just heard about it closing last week. I have so many memories with this ride. It was sad seeing not operating last summer but I was hoping it would be refurbished :(

This is so very sad for me to see. I grew up going to King's Dominion and even worked there in the summers as a teen. The Volcano was one of my favorite rides. They incorporated the smurfs into the extended waiting line area to give a nod to the mountains past. It was down quite a lot in recent years thou, so I'm not that surprised. Still, watching King's Dominion go through so many changes in the last 15 years, it's just one more piece of my childhood being scraped for "bigger and better things" and it's sad. The Avalanche, which is next to the Volcano was also down a lot. Maybe it will be next up for the chopping block.

Kat Black I was pretty lucky the day I visited several years ago both Volcano and Avalanche were operational. Avalanche is the last Mack built steel bobsled coaster with trains of multiple cars (as opposed to the single cars of La Vibora) operating in the US, so even though it looks less exciting, it would be sad seeing it leave.
