In 1959 the state of Kansas was absolutely shocked to find that one of its most prominent and well-liked families, The Clutters, had been murdered. Richard Hickock and Perry Smith, two convicts that had recently been released from prison were the ones responsible. Both had been told by a fellow inmate while incarcerated that the Clutter family had a large amount of cash stashed in a safe on their property. The two broke into the family home and searched for the safe, they then woke up the family when they couldn't find it, tortured and murdered them one by one. Thank you to exquisite David White for research assistance.

The car Smith and Hickock drove to the Clutters wasn't stolen,it was Dick's. They were arrested in a stolen car in Las Vegas

I’ve always wondered why they didn’t have a couple of big dogs at their farm to alert them of visitors . First line of defense out in the country. This story has always haunted me. I think because things like this didn’t happen too often in the 50’s I am guessing. Horrible, I read Truman Capotes novel when I was pretty young , my first obsession with true crime! The original movie made was pretty eerie, black and white film and a very young Robert Blake in the role of Perry Smith.

There's a family in my hometown that got murdered in January 2020. The son killed his mom and three siblings as they all got home from work/school. The plan was to kill the dad when he got home from work but was unsuccessful. Trials are still going on, the boy will not say why he did it. Just that he was going to kill his family, not himself though.

I'll eventually send in a full story. I just haven't had time to sit down and fully research it.

Not to be that guy but your research is a bit off perry smith stabbed herb first and then dick did it after and perry did it after dick said they needed to do so if you search you can find the tapes the police made of the interview they sound isn't great but they both admit perry stabbed him in the neck then dick put the knife back in the same spot

Man, I think I'm going to have to stop watching their podcast, I love it but one of the things I love is the suspense and they often insist upon ruining the entire episode before they even start. They do this in almost every single episode, just tell you everything that's about to happen and it's just super disappointing. It would be such a good podcast if they didn't do this and just told the story without telling you the ending before they start even telling the story. Oh well, moving on to look for a different true crime podcast. When I found Morbid I thought I had found something to watch after going through all of Mr. Ballen but nope, keep looking!
