The Coastal Livelihoods and Environmental Management Project is a 3-year UK-funded project implemented by Plan International Kenya in collaboration with National Government, County Government of Kwale, Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Kenya Forest Service, Pwani University, local partners and coastal communities in Lunga Lunga and Msambweni sub counties.
The project’s impact was aimed at improving the wellbeing of target communities and households in the Coastal-Kwale county, through sustainable management and conservation of natural resources.
The impact addressed four specific objectives:
i.) Communities managed mangrove growth and prevention of degradation.
ii.) Empowered communities through economically and environmentally sustainable livelihoods
.
iii.) Improved waste management and environmental protection practices in the communities.
iv.) Enhanced awareness and engagement of school children on environmentally sustainable practices.
The CLEMP project worked with eight (8) Mangrove groups, seven (7) seaweed farming groups, eleven (11) primary schools and eight (8) waste management sites.
