They bring him $1,000 Prada shoes to fix. Some think his is a 'lowly and dirty' job - but hey, this 75-year-old says, cobblers will never go out of style, so long as shoes need mending.

Nothing "lowly and dirty" about a man who work hard to make a living, even though he is a cobbler , he has more honor in himself and has managed to earn much self respect for himself than many . Many men who hold very high positions in society and government don't even have half of his dignity inside them.

Cobblers are unfortunately getting rarer and rarer these days in my place, cause people prefer to buy cheap, imported knockoff shoes from china with (unfortunately) quality almost close to the original ones. So they can simply dispose the damaged and buy new shoes. It doesnt help that cobblers earn very little that only old people unable to get any other jobs willing to do the job.

I blame Apple for it. Repair cost is insane. It gave me a bad impression that it's better to buy a new one instead of repairing it. So I got a $40 LG stylo 3 Plus, a used phone with 6 inch screen, light as a feather, quad cores and 32 gigs storages.

China may be good at making knockoffs but depends on the quality grade. Some looks great first hand, but over time with wear and tear they don’t as last long and just end up in landfill. Then it’s back to buying another replacement pair. This is due to the quality of glue and materials used. You can can get quality shoes too from China, Singapore, Vietnam ... best to invest in a good pair of quality shoes and it will last years which can even be handed down to the next generation (vintage shoes are great!) or cleaned up and donated to someone in need that’s starting out on their first job. At the end of the day, you pay for what you get ...

Unfortunately lots of Singaporeans think skilled labourers are lowly and dirty thanks to the long term use of cheap labour to sustain growth. And thanks to that no one aren't willing to pay proper wages for skilled and service workers, it isn't that Singaporeans aren't willing to work these jobs but rather these jobs aren't enough to sustain living in Singapore.

These cobblers are the best to go when I have like 20 broken shoes procrastinated from getting fix beforehand. Doesn't matter if it takes a week to get all done. I'm so satisfied with the charges and finally could wear again all my shoes after years. Cobblers from locksmith, handbags and shoes repair booths are my 2nd option, when I need some machinery works on shoes or any works that might burden the street shoe cobblers like a lot of sewing as they're not so machinery equipped. It's not just about price, but proper shops tend to operate from places with guaranteed customers like in malls etc. but street cobblers tend to be more on survival basis and they charge very less compared to the shops so it's pretty fair if we prefer them.

There is definitely nothing 'lowly and dirty' for this man making ends meet by being a cobbler. It may not be glamourous, but it is an honourable profession and it is not illegal. You shouldn't look down on this cobbler man. Cobbler requires skill and I would definitely need someone to repair my shoes when they are worn out. As you can see, being a cobbler is nothing to be ashamed of. This is better than illegally earning a living through being a burglar, a con artist, a thief, a hitman or a loan shark. Besides, you never know that when you are in hard times, this man might be able to help you.

If he went to the US, refined his skills and started his own shop he'd be earning a very good income. Its just in Singapore people have no appreciation of quality goods and services not to mention being well dressed which is why there is this buy and throw away mentality.
@daezjn
@daezjn 4 жыл бұрын
I love neighbourhood cobblers and support them as much as I can. Just bear in mind, if you're willing to pay $8 for a pair of shoes, you're destroying the planet with your buy and throw away attitude. Purchase quality shoes that lasts and need only the occasional repair from a good cobbler. You'll get more wear out of your shoes, helps with our planet and helps support local cobblers!
