Theres a story on youtube about a guy that killed a Cape Buffalo by stabbing it with his OSS.

I use it hunt pigs here in Hawaii. I wanted a long blade with the finger groove guard. It's messy sticking pigs and your hand can slip down the blade very easily. Never had a problem on this knife. The blade is plenty of sharp outta the box and has only needed honing to keep it sharp enough for me. This knife has held up very well since 2010.

Not a bad job at all , was worried you were gonna remove the trigger which is what makes that particular knife a fighter.

Imo the OSS would be excellent for piercing in an emergency defense situation because of it being so light, so would alot others as well, i recommend the Cold Steel Marauder too. That thing has a bit more weight to it and has an awesome clip point.

I really like these sub-hilt fighters and have owed a few of them including this cold steel oss. I got to handle an actual vintage Bob Loveless original at a knife show long ago and it's since been a dream of mine to add one of his to my collection (maybe when I win the lottery, lol). The kraton sub-hilt, while less pleasant aesthetically, is a general functional improvement imo. Finding a sub-hilt that is always comfortable and doesn't bite at all can be a challenge and a really good commissioned custom sub-hilt knife should be custom tailored to it's user's grip. This kraton is the next best, and Far more affordable, thing. Speaking of grips, I think handshake is how they are intended to be used. I really like to be able to fluidly transition to a reverse grip in my practice though and what I've found works well with these is to eliminate the sub-hilt altogether in a reverse by placing the bottom of the hand against the back/bottom of the sub-hilt. On most models my thumb then wraps comfortably over the end of the pommel and gives a sure and very controlled purchase. Thanks for highlighting the classic "sub-hilt fighter" design! It's one of my favorites and I'm always amazed when people who collect, use, and otherwise know knives have never heard of them. Great modifications, especially to the very questionable typical cold steel "secure-ex" or whatever they call their ridiculously over tight scabbards. I always put my own edge on any production blade but I seldom change the edge geometry much less the blade profile. Very bold of you, but I see the improvement and your satisfaction with your work. Im waiting on mine watching this video. I mistook the kraton for steel before purchase. It was a good deal but i got it primarily as i wanted one for collection for screw it reasons.

I bought the OSI a few months ago. This blade is now scary sharp and my superstitious brother thinks it has bad intentions of its own 😅 It's a sturdy piece of AUS8 and seems to be an amazing weapon. I may be buying a techlok for the sheath in the future. I was also looking into the OSS because I no longer have a true double edge knife in ly collection.

Not the best but yeah it has a good potential. For the price you actually get a lot. Also, can be used also as excellent “budget” fighting knife as a “sniper” when using two big knives.

Cold Steel's "Secure-EX" sheaths are actually just glass-filled nylon and will dull the knife almost immediately.

Hi, Actually is very easy to deploy CS knives if you press with your thumb on the margin of the sheath ... And is doable with one hand

It was south Africa and it was a men saving his father. Coldsteel is definitely capable of what they claim. That knife is designed for killing pigs. It's long and slim, for a reason. It's made to get to organs. When I was young I was told by the ww2 guys. I was a army ranger so I surrounded myself with old warriors to get stories. I remember one talking about the best knife for wet work. What knife fighting was called by old bad men. Anyway was a large bread knife or fillet knife. The reasoning was blade flex so it would go around ribs. Remember older steel would break. But I believe everything I was taught is still useful people just overlook. Anyway I think your knife is a well thought out killing knife. All Coldsteel sheath do that fake lock. I always push till it clicks then pull up. I do it now without thinking on my kubon. A knife doesn't have to be a 1/2 inch of steel. Nobody ever has knife duels. Most knives are way overbuilt in my opinion. Your knife looks killer. 😆 nice video

That Sub Hilt cut off on them is a whole different animal , because you can go tip up or tip down , I got one now but I may need to get another to experiment with 🤔🗡️

Great video Michael! I was wondering purely for self defense EDC, not for utility purposes, Which one is better, the OSS or OSI? Currently i'm rocking the cold steel SRK, and I don't think its enough for self defense.

I really like that mod you did to the sheath mouth. Maybe I missed it, but what did you use for that? A Dremel tool? If you want to reduce the retention a hair, just hit the nubs inside the throat with a dremel - very carefully as you don't want to take off too much material.

Great video! Not happy with any subhilts. Thinking of removing it from my Marauder. I have the same hand issues as you...

What do you think with this type of subhilt fighters? I always considered them a gimmick,and an hindrance to the grip.

IMine get super sharp real easy ...doesnt hold it too long with use tho. I modified the sheath so I can get my index finger into the subhilt before pulling it out

Wasnt a charging water buffalo in ausrallia where guy juumped on the back and killed with one shot. It was south africa, wounded cape buffalo that charged the client, but the guide took the knock, saved the client, but now buff pinned him down and the son of that guide stabbed the buff 3 times because the client froze and also wouldn't give his rifle to anyone. But in all honesty, any knife of any half decent brand of similar design would do the trick. Colfsteel were just lucky and used that incident obviously...

I feel that this knife is more nostalgic, and obviously historically for "combat". I think it's beautiful and I would definitely purchase one (but not in coldtsteel) or I would have a custom job done...but would NOT consider it my primary knife as far as defence or combat/fighting is concerned. But yeah, I agree with most to all of your points. And in my opinion it's not the best fighting knife, but oh so beautiful! Nice review, thanks.

Grabbing the sheath in one hand and the knife in the other to draw the knife isn’t the technique for this type of system you place your thumb on the sheath and give it a push and the knife will draw easily and quickly using only one hand.
