To British troops based in north Germany in the last two decades of the Cold War, he was a legend. But this was no commando or member of the special forces.

I backed a Bedford into the side of his van once .. I checked my mirrors but he snuck in at the last moment & I did not know he was there until he lent on the horn. It was endex on Reforger I think .

Used to have a "Fish & Chip" van drive around Lippstadt back in the mid-late 80's. Great times back then being a kid, could do so many things you could never do these days..so much freedom. FIsh & Chips weren't that bad either..lol
@Dreamcee

Yeah being a kid in German was like living in an open sandbox play park, Lippstadt was awesome especially the lakes where you could actually swim in and have barbecues, not forgetting the outdoor swimming pools that sold beer.

The ingenuities of toms and Wolfgang, a legend in BAOR and still discussed at Bratty and Warsteiner barbecues among cold war warriors, courtesy of LIDL. So the old fox used yellow handbags to find the hides and the crews helped him👍😊Doubtful anybody else could have done so well. Anyone know if he's still alive?

The US Army called them "Gut Trucks". What did the British Army call them? We rarely saw them in the woods and you certainly didn't want to get caught with beer in your track. ;-) Great story!

Heinz used to drive the NAAFI van round RAF Brüggen in the early and middle 60s. Proper, juicy bangers fried with onions, yum! The Deputy Senior Air Traffic Control Officer’s boxer, Franz, used to think so too, and followed me around drooling and telling me how much he loved a.) me, and b.) sausages!
