On this hike I took on the popular 10mile route of the Coledale Horseshoe in the Lake District with my new Instinct Solar watch, kindly sent to me by Garmin. [ad]
The route was fun, the views were insane, we had a blast and the watch is honestly incredible. Such a game-changer for anyone who spends a lot of time on the hills or in the outdoors in general.

Here is the link to the Garmin Instinct Solar watch: www.garmin.com...
*Whilst you can navigate and follow a course like I did, the Instinct Solar doesn’t have preloaded maps like some of the other Garmin watches. What you can see on the watch is the line to follow your course and it gives you a prompt of when a turn is coming up (it doesn’t show you rivers, roads etc) which was perfect for me to be able to navigate the Coledale Horseshoe. I had the route planned in the OS Maps app, and it was super simple to get that route onto my watch to follow out on the trail which is great for loads of reasons - you don’t need to get your phone out in bad weather, it’s not a problem if your phone battery is dying in the cold, and you don’t need to rely on phone signal etc.
Below is my kit list:

Osprey 2.5L water bladder: geni.us/waterb...

Tripod: geni.us/selfie...

I bought the Instinct Solar in the spring and love it. It is a complicated device. But I enjoy using it. One feature I like - now the shorter days upon us, is having an alert telling you how much time to go before sunset. That and being able to turn off advanced features and make it just a watch to save battery life is good when its overcast or when under a jacket cuff and it is not charging with the sun. That zig zag trail must have looked good when you looked at the app on your phone. :)

Stunning landscapes ... well done... a new Garmin Instinct Solar watch ... wow I'm jealous ... I bought the Garmin Fenix XS Plus a while ago ... charge will last up to 10 days regular use but have to charge on 3rd day if I'm in GPS mode :-/. I wear a G-Shock on the other arm (:-o) easier to glance at my time ... kind of a pain w/Garmin to keep pressing (6x) to see the time then go back to HR monitor mode - I watch a lot now...but I'm really impressed w/your Garmin solar ... I want one ...lol... a good on trail review too. Congrats on the completion of the Horseshoe ... and the watch! Keep on trekking ! :-)

So glad for you that the weather cooperated this time. The scenery was great. The Garmin watch seems to be a very good tool. Low tech backup always good to have. Check out Justin Outdoors youtube. He recently spent about 36 days completing the 1,100 Km Great Divide Trail in Canada and was very happy using the Garmin Fenix Pro solar watch. Plus, check out that Great Divide Trail scenery. Unbelievably awesome. But, he did get charged by a grizzly bear. Stay safe and keep on hiking. Greetings from Oregon

I was just thinking of AWOLNATION when you had the little sing along. 😂 Loved the little outtakes at the end too. Watch looks interesting, I'll keep it in mind. My Tomtom Runner 2 isn't ideal for hiking (it's a runner / fitness watch obviously from the name!) and the battery won't last a day if I've got headphones connected to it as well, sometimes need a bit of music on more boring stretches to keep me going.

@Grant Jones nope, the beauty of also being on my pretty indestructible watch which also has a track back feature and a compass and my exact co-ordinates at the click of a button 🙌🏻 . Technology has been sufficient and reliable enough for me for the last few years - when maps can give me all of the above I’ll consider making the switch.

Please read this for your safety. At 6 mins and 26 secs you say that the altimeter is reading 3036 ft and earlier at 5 min 53 sec you stated that the garmin watch is "scary accurate". If you are satisfied that the watch is accurate, you are wrong because the altimeter reading is off by not less than 730 ft. When you gave out the altimeter reading, you were on the path which leads from Coledale Hause up towards Wandope Moss, between Crag Hill and Grasmoor. The highest point on that path before you turn left direct for Crag Hill is at a max height of 2305 ft. No fell summit on the Coledale Horseshoe is higher than 2753 ft which is Crag Hill and in fact there only 4 fells in Cumbria above 3000 ft, the nearest being Skiddaw at 3054 ft. An error in altimeter reading of 730 ft is quite staggering and I would be worried if a reading was out by 20 ft, particularly if you are not familiar with the route or summit topography, particularly in cloud, mist, bad weather or winter conditions. There are two likely explanations for your error, both of which are worrying. They are (1) the Garmin watch is dangerously inaccurate, (2) You do not know how to use nor calibrate the device. I really do hope that you had a map and compass with you and you have at least a basic knowledge of navigation, because reliance on electronic devices whilst on the high fells is not recommended. I also appears to me that you had not prepared nor planned the walk with reference to OS maps, because had you done so you would have known that you would never exceed 2753 ft which is the highest point on the entire route and you would also have expected to see the triangulation column on the summit of Crag Hill. Clearly you did not expect that, as you asked your friend "was this Crag Hill". Do yourself a favour and plan your route using OS 1:25000 scale maps and buy the Wainwright guides for the region, which are invaluable fell-walkers bibles, in my view. By all means use your Garmin device, but familiarise yourself with how to properly use and calibrate it and understand that if it fails, could put your safety at risk, unless you have map and compass and know how to use them. Hope this helps.
