The Collector by John Fowles is hands-down one of the most disturbing and creepy books I've read. This is about Fredrik, a weird and lonely guy who feels unloved and alone. He wins a lot of money, so he decides to use it to abduct an art student that he is obsessed with, believing that she will learn to love him.

"Go get a turtle!" - great comment! I can't remember when I've hated a character as much as Frederick

Dark, creepy, and cringe-worthy - sure, there is the plot. ...but you MUST mention on how well it is written. He oozes the prose into your eyes! Great book.

If you want a great book about obsession, Nabokov’s (the guy who wrote Lolita) Pale Fire is where it’s at. It’s about a poet who wrote his masterpiece and then died on the eve of it’s finishing so his “best friend” publishes it with notes to “help” the reader interpret it, and those interpretations are increasingly deranged, conspiratorial and self centered…

Oooohh. That best friend character definitely sounds like a person Id love to hate and read about. Thanks for the recommendation!

@@hewhospeaksoftales Yeah the whole book is “imagine if someone had the audacity to make your life’s work about how you’re secretly in love with them”
