In 1941, Hitler's insatiable hunger for conquest led to a daring plan: the invasion of the Soviet Union. As the German war machine marched towards the motherland's vast resources and territories, the Soviet tanks, particularly the KV-1 heavy tank, stood as the first line of defense. And a small road, dubbed Tank Alley, would become the site of a legendary battle.
Merely miles away from the capital, Lieutenant Zinoviy Kolobanov and his platoon of five KV-1 tanks faced the advancing German forces, fully aware that the fate of their nation hung in the balance.
Against overwhelming odds, Kolobanov and his comrades stood their ground, unleashing the full might of their tanks against the advancing enemy while trying to ignite a spark of hope and determination in the hearts of their fellow Soviet soldiers.
Little did they know that their heroic actions on Tank Alley would go down in history as one of the most impressive tank battles ever fought…

One KV-1 was ordered to guard a bridge early in the invasion. The Germans fired at it with their 37mm anti-tank gun to no effect. They finally brought in an 88mm & destroyed it. When the Germans went up to the KV, they counted 72 rounds of the 37mm stuck in it. That's about the time they nicknamed their 37mm "The doorknocker". Thanks for the video.

The KV2 in the thumbnail and several stills was an assault gun variant with the 152mm in a high sided turret. It was never intended to take on tanks. But it easily could and did it well. Over 5000 KV1s were built and made a significant difference. But only 200 KV2s were built. So their impact was minor. I wouldn’t call the KV1 ‘colossal’. The KV2 was.

Yes the thumbnail has been changed since I posted this. Yes the KV1 was a large tank for 1941. Certainly compared to the panzer 2 and 3. But larger ‘colossal’ tanks did exist. T35 comes to mind.

@@paulroberts3639 kv1 was a full 20 tons heavier than the largest German tank and was practically impervious to their guns. In 1951, Lieutenant Kolobanov served in the Soviet occupation zone in East Germany, where he was court-martialed when a subordinate escaped to the British occupation zone. After that, he was transferred to the reserves.He remained in the army for some years, based in Belarus, and retired as a lieutenant-colonel. He then went on to work for the Minsk Auto Works. So, the Soviet Union didn't really appreciate him - he certainly wasn't treated as a hero later !

The KV2 with the 152 mm howitzer gun was supper good in a defensive position, but did have severe limitations. The tank had to be level or the turret would not be able to be rotated and its powertrain was way underpowered. it could knock out any tank because the 152 gun was pretty much a artillery round hitting, the sheer impact of the HE explosion would damage most tanks.

The problem was strictly strategic. Prior to the Invasion, the German High Command was given a warning by their General Thomas, that the then planned German offensive only had two months supply of gasoline and synthetic rubber to engage in their famed Blitzkrieg. Goering and Hitler was given this warning and laughed it off saying that it would only take two months to destroy the Soviet Union. Further, no Winter Coats, boots nor uniforms would be needed either. As a result, the German tanks were stopped in front of Moscow and Leningrad as they had run out of gasoline, trucks and armor vehicles had their rubber tires worn out, and German soldiers froze to death. The Germans thought they could loot the Russians of these supplies as they did with the French but that did not work out either. One German General said, “These long Russian distances devour us”. Lastly, the Germans transported 80 percent of their troops, tanks and guns by railroad but the Russian rail tracks were of a different gauge and therefore, German trains could not run in Russia. The Russians did not have this problem as the U.S. had donated 150,000 Ford trucks which each could carry 15 soldiers and an artillery piece in tow. The Germans had no such capability.
@banedonrunestar5618
@banedonrunestar5618 Жыл бұрын
The Soviets had all kinds of supply issues too, Lend-Lease wasn’t a magic wand that made their issues go away. Many tanks, trucks, and aircraft they received from the allies required the fuel the allies sent as well. Soviet fuel wasn’t as highly refined and had far more impurities. If they used Soviet fuel in Lend-Lease equipment especially aircraft, the equipment became slower, less responsive, under-powered, required more maintenance, and failed sooner.
@richpontone1
@richpontone1 Жыл бұрын
@@banedonrunestar5618 Yes but those US Lend Lease Ford Trucks were better than no Trucks at all, and the Germans had much fewer heavy trucks that could bring troops, artillery, ammunition etc. to the battle field. One reason why the Germans had to produce many more self propelled artillery was the lack of such trucks to tow such artillery and because there were very few highways in Russia especially during the Winter months. The Russians seem to adopt to these factors very well as they could deploy over 1,000 non self propelled artillery pieces to each of their military offensives. As for the inferior quality of Soviet oil, Hitler was very keen to divide half of his Panzers in capturing the Russian Baku oil field from his planned attack on Stalingrad. Probably a decisive factor in his defeat there. Stalin had ordered his Russian Commissar in Baku, “If the Germans capture Baku, I will shoot you. if they capture the oil fields intact, I will shoot you again”. The oil fields were completely trashed when the Germans captured them.

Further, their tanks had Diesel engines which could run in Winter temperatures unlike the German tanks without anti freeze fluids. The T-34 tanks had wider threads which meant they could travel at full speed in snow, shallow streams and unsaved roads. The German tanks could not at that time. The Germans were shocked at all levels that “An Inferior Race” could create such a tank.

@@mikedawson6417 The Russian T-34 tanks introduced in this battle used Diesel fuel which could operate at a lower colder temperature. German tanks used petrol which froze. The T-34 tanks were then immune to German anti-tank and tank fire and the Russian tanks wider chassis and Christie suspension could easily travel through Ice, Snow and mud as well. Not only did the Germans not have antifreeze for their tanks but no Winter clothes for their soldiers so they had to strip the dead and alive Russian soldiers of theirs.

The KV-1 had thick armor and a powerful gun, but one on one it is no match for a Panther, Tiger II, or even Tiger I. I say this because the optics on the German tanks were far superior allowing hits on target at a much greater range, the KV-1 only had one good shot because after every shot the gun had to be moved to point up in the air (idk if turret had to be in a certain position also) in order to reload. Having to move the gun off target to reload and then back on target meant the Germans could fire several accurate rounds for each KV-1 round. I don’t remember if the KV-1 turret rotation was completely manual or not. I think it is same as the T-92. The manual turret meant slower movement and crew getting exhausted if having to crank it around all day in the heat. I wonder what kind of German tanks were destroyed. I’d wager almost all of them were panzers (or similar armor and gun like Stug) or less. First to have twenty Tigers be they I’s, II’s, or mixed in one group was almost unheard of. Panthers were even more rare. Second destroying twenty plus Tigers with four tanks is almost unbelievable. Third I’m pretty sure a KV-1 even with it’s thick armor couldn’t handle all the hits dude’s tank supposedly took if it was the Tiger’s 88mm gun with armor piercing rounds. I’ve read of it taking two or three rounds to stop a KV-1, but never a KV-1 or JS-2 taking twenty plus rounds from Tigers and Panthers.

The Panther and Tigers were produced because of the insane superiority of the KV1 and the T34 over the Panzers III, IV. And, the T34/85 as well as the KV2 and JS2 could go toe to toe with any German tank of the war.

Despite the claims of the German Army moving towards Stalingrad; this engagement took place during Barbarosa with attack on Leningrad. The German Tanks destroyed would have been Panzer I, II, III or Stugs. The Tiger was still being designed, it was the fact that the Russians had working heavy tanks (sometimes) that was a surprise to the Germans. Later tanks like the Tiger, Tiger II or Panther were MUCH better, because they were later tanks with experience and technology built in. The KV's stood little chance against those.

It's such a shame that Stalin executed so many of his good generals in the late '30s, we'll never know how effective their military skill could have helped the Soviet Union in the early days of Barbarros

So many lived in their bubble at that time and didn't understand other plans.... Hitler and Stalin both conquered at the same time, starting from their neighbours, but Hitler was more in focus because he raged in the heart of Europe. They made Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact in 1939 as mutual non aggression agreement, but their interests crossed when Hitler was arrogant and Stalin more clever waiting it's moment to invade Europe when it's weakened by Hitler. Hitler saw that Stalin's thirst was to get more lands just by demanding (down to Greece and Kuwait). Hitler considered him to be "greedy" and gave order to paralyze Stalin with Barbarossa. Soviets gathered huge army to it's western border, printed 6 million dictionaries (for army use) to be able to communicate in Europe etc, but Hitler took them by suprise attacking that same huge Soviet army group in June 1941 and so the war went on with it's atrocities and killings. They were both evil as systems (Nazis vs communists) and were designed to eliminate each other by nature, but Soviets were more clever and won the US and UK sympathy for aid and alliance. Soviets destroyed most evidenses of their previous plans (including these 6 mil. dictionaries) and rewrote the history because they were recognized as they were.

Stalin had the greatest army and airforce when it invaded Poland and through general Stalin's incompetence, was beaten in the battle, the miracle on the Dnieper, preventing Germany's invasíon of most of western Europe. With a huge portion of his forces positioned far forward, Stalin was surely preparing to invade again.

The KV in the thumbnail was probably a range tank used by the Germans to test the effectiveness of it's ammo. I'd hate to be that intelligent officer. One German esponionge victory was to convince the Soviets that the German guns were much more effect than they were. This led to the Soviet KV-1E. A KV with added armor plate. This exacerbated exacerbated the low mechanical reliability.

Heared a story about the sovjets use a KV-1 (may KV-2 not quite ure anymore) to block a only road to buy some time for the rest of his retreating army group. The KV has take his postion in such a way no vehicle can pass him. So the germans was forced to bring some tow equipment to clear the way. Took many worthy hours to do so. Either the crew "park" the tank and leave him behind or they fight until it was over. But the sure thing is, the KV blocked the road just staying there and its weight prevents every try to simple push it with other tanks.

No tank cannot be destroyed by an aerial bomb of 200 kilos or 500 pounds. The tank may look OK but the crew are all over all the inside walls! An M-1 Abrams T.U.S.K. with all the upgrades, can be rendered useless by a 200 kilo/500 pound high explosive bomb, according to General Dynamics, it's designers. At a minimum, you'll break ONE track and immobilize it, then it's target practice. A 500 kilo or 1000 pound fragmentation bomb will turn ANY tank with-in about 300 meters into a window screen. A 250 pound white phosphorous bomb will destroy any engine, suck the air from the crews lungs and probably set the METAL of the hull on fire. The phrases unsinkable, indestructible, bomb-proof, bullet-proof don't exist to the military. They've all been disproven too many times. During the US-Iran war, we used 2000 lb. solid CONCRETE bombs to destroy Saddam's tanks without destroying the bridges they were hiding under. A ton of concrete hitting your tank at 600+MPH is certain to ruin your day...and your lifespan!

KV1 had mediocre gun of 76 mm, same as first T34. KV2 indeed had 152 howitzer mounted in tall turret. One tank held a whole Nazi tank division at the bridgehead in Resekne, now in Latvia. Soviets only learned about in 1944, when they captured the tank division battle journal. No names of the heroes were ever traced.

A while ago I saw a video that analyzed the Nazi attack of the Soviet Union. The thesis is that it is incorrect that they attacked the USSR for conquest, it was primarily for oil. The Soviets had diminished or cut off what they were willing to sell to Nazi Germany, and the Nazis couldn't long prosecute their war elsewhere without it. Thus, they attacked their former "ally" to wrest control of the oil in the southern parts of the USSR, while also attacking the northern portions to throw them off balance and opportunistically exterminate Jews and others living there. Had Germany had sufficient oil resources, it's probable that Hitler would have not attacked the USSR as they knew it was a gamble. History today often has such misattributions, for instance with the US Civil War and slavery. The abolition of slavery was more about economic concerns from northern business and labor than any real concern for the rights of the slaves themselves. Thus, why it was easy for resurgent Democrats after the war to push Jim Crow segregation laws in much of the country and negate voting rights and other freedoms granted by acts and Amendments of the time for 100 years till the 1960s.

Just so there is no confusion. The Democrats that supported Jim Crow laws are not the same as todays Democrats. PS. You can decide who supported slavery and Jim Crowe by following those who support confederate statues.
