Ariell Johnson doesn’t wear a cape. But to many comic book fans and artists, she’s a superhero. Johnson is the first black woman to own a comic book shop on the East Coast. Her Amalgam Comics & Coffeehouse in Philadelphia sells comic books like “Harriet Tubman: Demon Slayer” and “The Almighty Street Team” that aren’t readily available in other stores. Amalgam is much more than a place to shop. Johnson, who calls herself “the head nerd in charge,” has built a fun and welcoming community for all.

The thing is, people who call for diversity in comics are the same people who won't buy comic featuring a diverse character. Last year DC introduced characters like Silencer and justice league of China which had extremely good story but DC had to cancel them because of low sales . I mean If publishers are giving you an diverse book then why not go and support them.

Batto Otoko it’s because all the crazies care about is forcing others to obey their impossible standards while they themselves don’t follow what they preach. They don’t actually like comics or most entertainment. They just want people to listen and do what they say without question.

Because it's not about the comics. It's about their liberal arts degree having failed them so they have to interject their politics into other peoples hobbies and interests. Then they divide and ruin their communities and call everyone who doesn't like their comics racist.. when really it's just preference on who you like and what you want to read.

Batto Otoko Because who cares about diversity! A race or skin color doesn’t make anyone more interesting. If you find diversity as a form of entertainment, that’s pretty messed up. It’s like you’re using other races just for entertainment rather than actual merit. Stop focusing on race and focus on a good story. I don’t want a character that is of a certain race, I want a good character that happens to be of a certain race. Trust me that makes a big difference. I am saying this as a brown man. I’m tired of people identifying me as Latino or a brown man. Why can’t I just be a man or just an American. Instead I’m always called something else. It’s very annoying.

One of the reasons we enjoy art is that we crave novelty: we want to be surprised and meet new people to expand our horizons. Reading works by diverse authors isn't just a meaningless change in the character's skintone, but a unique opportunity to have a fun time in places you know little of and meet people with a surprisingly different view of the world. Diversity has value in itself. If you know nothing about China, watching a sloppy romantic TV-movie made in Hong Kong may be more enjoyable than watching an Oscar-winner film. The adventure into the unknown and the unexpected can sometimes be more important to the espectator than the "objective" value of a work. The quality of a work only becomes important when you are familiar with the subjects of the work. Because when the subjects are shockingly new to you, you become so fascinated by the surprises that you just don't care about comparing it to other works. I'm not saying all comics by, say, black artists, portray a really unique experience; I bet most of them would probably fit your expectations of what a black story is. But I think every reader should be aware of what is unfamiliar and alien to him, so he can then find books about it that offer him that novel cultural experience, just to feel the thrill of discovering and learning.

the catch 22 of that though is that people are tightfisted. They'll usually stick with titles they're familiar with and not take a chance on original things. Hence the publisher's trick to introduce new characters/stories/ideas by putting them under the banner of an already well known title

@Muqadas A it's not that serious calm down. If you want diversity in comics then good for you, go actually buy and support those comics then. Too many people demand diversity in comics by changing already existing characters instead of making new complex well writen ones. When those people get what they want an some white male super hero becomes a gay, latina, 16-year-old, trans girl they applaud it. But for s o m e reason they DON'T BUY THE FUCKING COMIC and it ends up getting cancelled. That's why I made a "negative comment" because I've seen this shit before, and how it TYPICALLY ends. If this ends up positive instead of negative and helps small artists writing diverse quality content instead of retconned trash then good for those artists, readers, and the owner of the establishment.

@@MyShiroyuki Why are you painting it as if it's representation's fault? There is so much constant racism, sexism, abelism, and practically everything negative that ends in -ism out there, and there is enough literature out there and decades of research in psychology and sociology that show it. Somehow people end up believing this clause that some "evil feminsit SJW people" are the ones trying to 'force' representation when in reality they can't even get through it without getting howled at with a bunch of angry nerds. Go to r/gamersriseup and r/subredditdrama and you will see many examples of communities actively trying to set up such an idea. Even on youtube here. None of this wasn't "forced diversity", it was supposed to be a normal change of times. Why do you have to set the bar so high to say what should be and what should not be excluded from your set of hobbies or interests? What have feminists done to destroy such hobby? It's just such fake outrage. Here's a video I can give you: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/sNqApcJqnNSylKs.html This is so fake at all. Why do women who want to join hobbies dominated by men have to deal with so much toxicity from people stopping real time and true, proven, progressive ideals that have lots of research about them (feminism isn't just a gamer cringe hobby). The people pushing for diversity wanted to turn Peter Parker black rather than create a new character who happened to be black but Stan Lee said no. He didn’t want his characters to be changed like that just for diversity’s sake. So these people created Miles Morales, who started out as basically Spider-Man as a black person but later became a good character who earned the Spider-Man title. Stan Lee was for diversity sure, but he definitely wasn’t for representation for representation’s sake. He knew good characters would be looked up to regardless of their race or gender.

Rockandstone Because they’re pushing for diversity despite that being exactly why the comic book industry is dying now. They care more about diverse characters than actual good characters with good stories. It’s cool they’re supporting indie comics but they didn’t give much reasons for why people should buy the guy’s comics other than it’s diverse.
@thefrostbee4182
@thefrostbee4182 5 жыл бұрын
@@MyShiroyuki that does make sense, however, i dont think the point of diversity is just for the fact that its diverse, and ignoring all else. If they did only care about that, and it was bad characters and story, that sucks, but i saw nothing indicating that
@MyShiroyuki
@MyShiroyuki 5 жыл бұрын
Rockandstone The vast majority of comics these days DO only care about diversity to the detriment of the story. Sure the indie comics the store supports may not be like that but these days, buyers of comic books see any comic using diversity as a selling point as a telltale sign that it isn’t worth reading or buying. People are also sick of being told to support something just because they’re diverse. Saying this store supports local indie comics and not bringing attention to diversity would have been a much better story that would have been received far better.

@@MyShiroyuki i hear the argument that alot of people are like this all the time but. ive never seen it myself, and i almost always always see the complete opposite. it feels more like people just make up their minds that all diverse operations or groups are bad, and then come up with ways of how they could be bad, and just go with it as the truth, instead of actually getting numbers on how it works. like the classic ''look at this one dumbass, who also happens to be left, or right, or whatever. that means the rest of em suck too''
@MyShiroyuki
@MyShiroyuki 5 жыл бұрын
Rockandstone I don’t like people who don’t look for evidence to support their arguments and just spout things as if they’re fact as well. I talked to people and the majority of them are fed up with this so called diversity. I also looked at the sales numbers of the comics, and other forms of entertainment, that use diversity as a selling point. And they’re doing terribly. The local comic book store where I live is focusing more on selling manga and Japanese merchandise rather than comics and comic merchandise now because that is what sells. I’ve seen more and more evidence that diversity doesn’t sell every day. This store shouldn’t be advertising how diverse they are because nowadays, that’s what most comic book stores are doing and most of them are failing.

But the constant pushing for diversity is actually killing the comic books industry. There’s hardly anybody who wants to buy a comic cause the title character is a person of color, LGBTQ, or some other minority. But that’s what we’re seeing in comics nowadays. More focus on “representation” over making a good character or good story.
@oneshot2139
@oneshot2139 5 жыл бұрын
Not really. It’s important to represent different people and normalise them. They may not be selling crazy in singles but single issues don’t sell great anyway. Trades, libraries and digital are where kids and other people read
@MyShiroyuki
@MyShiroyuki 5 жыл бұрын
One Shot The point of comics and other forms of entertainment is to make money, not change society in a way it no longer needs. They already treat these people as normal or heck, treat them better than they would others. And most kids don’t care if a hero is the same as them. All they care about is if a hero is awesome or funny or pretty. I’m not black but my favorite superhero as a kid was Static Shock because he was awesome. His cartoon dealt with racial and lgbt issues but it handled them well and didn’t make Static Shock’s life revolve around such issues. You say it’s important for these “diverse” comics to show different people and normalize them but would they like to be represented by terrible characters in terrible storylines? This push for diversity against all logic just hurts these people rather than make anything better for them.
@oneshot2139
@oneshot2139 5 жыл бұрын
That’s just not true. I didn’t care about the colour of a heroes skin as a kid because most of them had my skin colour. Also these things do matter. Film, TV, video games, art, comics. These all reflect our world and push for positive change. Media does matter
@oneshot2139

Also Static Shock had entire episodes dedicated to racist characters if that came out today you’d be saying it was “SJW”
@MyShiroyuki
@MyShiroyuki 5 жыл бұрын
One Shot I watched those episodes recently and I didn’t think “SJW”. Like I said, those issues were handled well in the cartoon and Static Shock’s life didn’t revolve around said issues. He was normal because he did things normal people do. And sure, you may have been different as a kid but so far, every child I took care of in fifteen years never once told me they liked a character because they have the same skin color as them. And I made sure to ask them why they like them in recent years given the insanity of pushing fake diversity. And the answers were always “because they’re cool/funny/pretty”.

Ramen Doodles It is real. Turning preestablished white men in fiction into different races or turning them into women is forced diversity.
