Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at Jimmy Somerville again but with a newly formed duo group: The Communards. But that doesn't mean ex-bronski beat didn't bring along his neat tricks with beats as well! An instant favorite, see why now!

Love the Communards, with their female backing band and Sarah Jane Morris on guest vocals. Also features the most famous female drummer of the 80's in England June Miles Kingston. Famously it was No1 for weeks here in the UK and when the band went onto Top of the Pops Jimmy and Sarah mimed each others parts rather than their own. I'd recommend For a friend which Jimmy wrote about his friend Mark Ashton who died of Aids in the 80's. His story was featured in the movie Pride.

When Bronski Beat released their first single in 1983, they came out as gay immediately. They did it so that the homophobic press wouldn't find out and make up nasty, innuendo laden stories about them. By coming out, they retained a certain level of control. This was a brave thing to do; the AIDS crisis had begun and the homophobic press were all calling it the 'gay plague'. But Bronski Beat and later The Communards held their heads high and made great dance music that often had a subtle political message. And the fact that Don't Leave Me This Way was number one in the UK charts for so long is testament to their broad appeal; they were loved by millions of people who weren't LGBT+. But they meant a lot to LGBT+ people at the time because they were the first to openly make pop music about the gay experience, and it was the soundtrack to a lot of gay people's lives and told their stories. Jimmy is still singing, and Richard Coles is now the Reverend Richard Coles, an Anglican vicar and radio presenter, still openly gay, and a wonderfully warm, funny and down to earth human being.

A well done interpretation of "Don't Leave Me This Way" done in a Synth-pop style. It differs from Thelma's American Disco version from 1977 and Jeanie Tracy's Hi-NRG version from 1985 version. To be fair, I do enjoy all three versions because all three versions are different takes on the same great song. All three versions became successful amongst various areas in the LGBT communities.

Hi Dereck, I'm fathoming that the strange guys at the end represented the anti-gay attitudes that were around from the mid-80s through the very early-90s, where mainstream-media was often anti-gay, and just focussed on stereotypes and negatives view about anyone in th e LGBTIQA+ community back then, as gay men were also being scapegoated for HIV/AIDS, even though all walks of life could spread it it they're not safe (but minorities are always the one who are there to blame for the world's woes). Those guys could also have been a metaphor for the censorship of even simple non-heteronormative things of the time and/or the could have represented the extremely conservative Margaret Thatcher government in the UK at the time (which was in cahoots with the Regan government), and they brought 'Clause 28' aka 'Section 28' into the UKwhere anything homosexual couldn't be 'promoted' (similar to what Russia has in law for these days). Here's a Wikipedia account of that old homophobic and destructive British legislation: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Section_28

Exactly! The #11 Best selling single worldwide for the year of 1977. The Communards version from 1986 failed to Chart as World Wide Year End best selling singles. Yet this version did got to #04 on European Hot 100 (and #01 in UK) but stopped at #40 in US Billboard Hot 100 while Thelma Houston was #01 back in 1977. In Europe Thelma Houston song version did good too. The original version it's not from Thelma Houston, she also did a cover. The original version was released in 1975 by Harold Melvin & Bluenotes and was fast R&B/Blues not disco. As far as club hit... both Thelma Houston and The Communards version were big club hits though Thelma Houston version was and still is a bigger club Anthem.

@@herobreaker9011 In USA maybe. In the UK the Communards was a much bigger hit and a big number 1. As a UK teenager growing up in the 80s this was massive and an anthem of the times. The Thelma Houston track is indeed great, but of a different era - her singing is epic, but the soundtrack is average 70s stuff.

Derek this is an absolaue 80's iconic track, but the book and the page being stamped with the word "Banning" is a reference to Section 28 an anti gay law that came into effect in the 80's in the UK arounf the Aids crisis. Jimmy was also a brillaint political activist and worked with groups like Act Up. But despite the climate at the time this song was so uplifting and it still is today.Jimmy was always and still is out and proud in a most unapologetic way.I still love this song today.(matt)P.S back in the day I had such a man crush on Richard Coles!! who is now Reverand Ricahard Coles.
